  13. Plea to force utility firms to carry cost of coastal erosionpublished at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Utility companies should help pay for protection from coastal erosion, that's what the leader of a Yorkshire council is telling the government.

    Collapsed chalets

Derek Bastiman, the leader of Scarborough Council, has written to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, saying anti-erosion infrastructure is nearing the end of its life and councils are struggling to replace it.

He says there's a burden being placed on coastal communities by being required to fund works that land-locked councils don't have to.

Under current legislation, gas and electric companies do not have to contribute to the cost of coastal erosion defences.

In the letter, co-signed by eight other coastal authority leaders, Councillor Bastiman says: "We would, therefore, encourage the government to incentivise utility companies to plan and invest in the resilience of their coastal infrastructure.

"In the first instance, we believe this could be instigated by the commissioning of a 'National Coastal Erosion Resilience Review' similar to the National Flood Resilience Review (in 2016) and which includes the utility companies as a major stakeholder and beneficiary."

It offers a space to find other women to walk home with at night, and provides phone numbers for licensed taxis and campus security.

Laura Challinor came up with the idea.

She says: "I want girls to feel safe and hate that we can't feel safe walking around after dark, so this is an extra tool to make girls feel more comfortable.

"So people post in saying, 'is anyone walking home from a certain pub tonight' ...'is anyone leaving the library at a certain time tonight' ... and if someone's had a bit of a creep following them home, they can let the group know."

A project to help the revival of salmon in a Yorkshire river has been officially opened by Fisheries Minister Robert Goodwill.

The fish pass at Linton-on-Ouse, in North Yorkshire, will allow salmon and other migratory fish, including trout and eels, to bypass a weir that blocks the way to their spawning grounds.

The scheme will also provide green energy from a hydropower station and some sport for canoeists.

The Environment Agency says: "Recent years have seen an international decline in salmon and stocks in many rivers in England are at the lowest levels on record.

"This project is one of many we're undertaking with partners to improve migration for salmon and boost their numbers."

At the opening yesterday, Fisheries Minister, Robert Goodwill, said: “I was delighted to open the Linton Lock fish pass - it's only through continuing to take action that we will successfully protect this iconic fish for future generations.”

The fish pass uses a lifting mechanism to moderate river flows to keep the route passable for fish, while also benefitting recreational users of the river by creating a white water course for canoeists.

The Linton Lock scheme is expected to produce around 1,870 MWh of clean electricity each year, which is enough to power 450 homes.
