Paul Grayson, who drives an ice cream van in the city, successfully applied to bring his serving time forward after the school he parks outside changed its finish time.

Now he is able to start selling to pupils as soon as the bell goes at Birley Community Primary School on Thornbridge Avenue.

He said: "This means I no longer have to ask them to wait until 15:00 for ice cream."

The council's licensing committee is normally under strict rules to not allow ice cream vendors to serve before 15:00.

But, given that the matter only involved a change of 15 minutes, Mr Grayson was treated as a "one-off" exception to the rule.

Following this, the committee is now looking at changing its policy to make it more flexible.

Fracking is a technique designed to recover gas and oil from shale rock.

Third Energy was given planning permission to operate on a site at Kirby Misperton, near Pickering, in May 2016, but is yet to begin work.

A protest camp near the site was established in 2016 and was dismantled in March last year.

The Home Office has agreed to cover 85% of the "additional costs" of the operation at Kirby Misperton, amounting to £614,000, according to North Yorkshire PFCC Julia Mulligan.

The costs include overtime payments and the expense of bringing officers in from other forces, but do not include payments for officers who police the site each day.

Commenting on the decision, Ms Mulligan said: "It's right the government has agreed to pay these costs.

"The police operation had a significant and visible impact on the local community, but also had an impact more widely across North Yorkshire given the number of officers involved."
