  9. York scientists discover 'handbrake' for immune systempublished at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2019

    HYMSImage source, Google

Known as miR-132, it's said to act as a "handbrake" on the immune system by controlling how cells respond to infection.

Dr Dimitris Lagos, from the Hull York Medical School, said: "When you're responding to an infection your immune system protects you, but it can also be the thing that makes you ill - getting that balance wrong is what usually leads to a chronic infection.

"The miR-132 is a very small part of your DNA, but we discovered it helps control how others molecules work."

Speaking of the team's objective, Dr Dimitris said: "The two aims we have are either finding ways that make sure infections are cleared faster, or the bad things your immune system can do are minimized."
