Archaeologists have been given an opportunity to discover more about the history of York's medieval city walls.
The walls run for 2.1 miles and include five main gateways and 45 towers.
Under the council's plan to upgrade the front of the city's railway station, Queen Street Bridge (pictured), next to part of the walls, would be demolished.
Now archaeologists have been called in to look at the impact the scheme could have.
John Oxley, the council's city archaeologist, said: "We are digging a series of small trenches right up against the city wall.
"There are two shards of Roman pottery that have popped out already: a Roman Samian ware which is orange-red glazed and a piece of Roman mortaria."
The bridge will be taken down in sections to enable the team to monitor any movement in the walls as a result of the works.

A dog has been taken in by Hull City Council after being spotted tied to a lamp-post in the city.
Max the boxer was reported to council dog wardens by a concerned resident who found him on Scott Street yesterday.

Max was assessed by vets and has now been transferred to a specialist boxer rescue centre which will try and find him a permanent home.
Police say the person who killed a Rotherham woman may have returned to the area where her body was discovered in the days after her death.
Alena Grlakova, 38, who was last seen near a hotel in Rotherham's Parkgate on Boxing Day, was found dead behind it on Tuesday.
Officers are continuing to search the scene and have appealed to members of the public who may have seen "anybody acting suspiciously" to get in touch.
Det Ch Insp Mark Oughton believes the offender may have returned to the area between 26 December and Monday this week.
He said: "I do believe that members of the public in the local area have critical information that's crucial to my enquiry."
Police say they have been given more time to question a 45-year-old Rotherham man on suspicion of her murder.
Tourism organisation Welcome to Yorkshire has been accused of dragging its feet over the investigation into claims against former boss Sir Gary Verity.
West Yorkshire council leaders have said events like the Tour de Yorkshire could be at risk if the tourism body doesn't change how it works.
Sir Gary (pictured) resigned on health grounds on 22 March but since his departure concerns have been raised about his expenses and behaviour.
Council leaders say the investigations aren't moving fast enough and also say they want immediate changes to make the organisation more transparent or future funding could be at risk.
Welcome to Yorkshire says it expects to have appointed those who will carry out the investigations within the next week.
