    Plans for the site of the former Futurist theatre in Scarborough should be reconsidered, according to a group representing local people.

    The Futurist opened in 1921 and hosted many artists - including famously The Beatles in 1963 - but closed in 2014 and was demolished last year.

    Flamingoland has unveiled proposals to build a theme park in its place.

    But, in a letter to Scarborough Borough Council, members of a group describing themselves as professional people with long experience of the resort, say it's the "most important architectural decision for the town in the last 30 years".

    They argue that the Futurist site, on Scarborough seafront, is a rare opportunity to create an outstanding development.

    Police investigating the suspected murder of a mother-of-four in Rotherham are looking for the clothes she was wearing when she was last seen alive.

    The naked body of 38-year-old Alena Grlakova, who had been missing since Boxing Day, was found buried in the dried bed of a stream and items of her clothing are still missing.

    Officers have today displayed a black top, similar to the one they are looking for, and they are also trying to find a pair of black bottoms with white stripes down the side.

    Det Ch Insp Mark Oughton said: "They could well have been deposited in the local area, someone could have found them. If you have found them, please get in touch."

    Police say they have been given more time to question a 45-year-old Rotherham man on suspicion of her murder.

    A man who repeatedly stabbed his former girlfriend in a jealous rage in Leeds has been jailed for life for her murder.

    Joe Atkinson attacked 24-year-old Poppy Devey Waterhouse with a kitchen knife at the flat they shared in The Avenue on 14 December.

    The maths graduate sustained more than 100 injuries, including about 70 knife wounds, Leeds Crown Court was told.

    Atkinson, 25, who admitted murder, was told he will serve a minimum of 15 years and 310 days.

    Miss Devey Waterhouse, originally from Frome in Somerset, worked as an analyst for William Hill and was described as a "prodigiously gifted mathematician".

    Paramedics and British Transport Police officers were called to the station at about 10:00 to deal with a 16-year-old boy.

    The incident isn't being treated as suspicious.

    A judge is due to decide whether to charge the boyfriend of a British woman who was found dead in a hotel in Switzerland.

    Anna Florence Reed, 22, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, was discovered in the bathroom of her hotel room in Muralto, in the district of Locarno, on Tuesday.

    Swiss Police said the 29-year-old German man, who shared the hotel room with Ms Reed, was in custody.

    The Foreign Office (FCO) said it was offering assistance to her family.

    Ms Reed was a former pupil of Ashville College in Harrogate.

    In a statement, the school said: "We are saddened to learn of the death of former pupil Anna Reed, and our thoughts are with her family."

    A decision on whether the 29-year-old, who lives in the Zurich area, will be either charged or released on bail is due to be made later.

    An urgent appeal's been issued asking people to look out for a 15-year-old boy who's gone missing from Scarborough.

    Police say Joshua McMichael left his school on Springhead School on Barry’s Lane at 10:25 today and hasn't been seen since.

    He's described as 5ft 1in tall, of stocky build, wearing grey trainers, a blue padded jacket and tracksuit bottoms.

    The North Yorkshire force says it's "extremely concerned for Joshua’s welfare" and is urging anyone who thinks they might have seen him to contact them.

    The life and work of a writer who was educated in Hull and Barton upon Humber is to be celebrated ahead of the 50th anniversary of Get Carter, the classic film based on one of his books.

    Ted Lewis, who has been described as an "amazing artistic polymath" and who also worked as an artist on the Beatles' Yellow Submarine film, died in 1982 but would have been 80 next year.

    A national year-long celebration is planned, but there are also calls for an exhibition of his art at Baysgarth House where he was educated as a pupil of Barton Grammar School.

    Biographer Monty Martin (pictured) said: "He was an innovator, he was a polymath, he loved Barton and he wrote so beautifully about Barton."

    The Manchester-born writer, who attended Hull Art School, is best known for writing the 1970 book which was famously turned into a Michael Caine film (pictured) the following year.

    A 13-year-old boy who was reported missing from his home in Leeds has been found, police say.

    Jack Lipley was last seen going from Hunslet towards Leeds city centre.

    Police say they want to thank the public for their help in finding him.

    The five-door black Volkswagen Golf was seen close to Bradford Royal Infirmary in the early hours of 9 April.

    Officers want to speak to the driver and another man who helped to put the victim into the car, which at the time had the registration plate SJ62 0ZP.

    A 32-year-old is believed to have suffered his injuries in an earlier incident in the car park of Manningham Library.

    A 34-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent and is due to appear before Bradford magistrates later.

    A bike park in West Yorkshire which was built entirely by volunteers is due to open this weekend after a year of work.

    The Devil's Toenail Bike Park in Wetherby was built by local residents who donated thousands of hours of their time.

    They've transformed an area of wasteland to produce 1km of trails, a jump line and a pump track for riders.

    A woman's body has been recovered from the River Ouse in York city centre.

    Police say they were called to reports from a member of the public just before 07:00 this morning.

    Skeldergate, North Street and Ouse Bridge were shut while the body was recovered.

    Officers say they are not yet in a position to release her identity.

  17. Clean air zones: How polluted are Yorkshire streets?published at 10:21 British Summer Time 12 April 2019

    Drivers of the most polluting vehicles now have to pay to drive into central London and soon other towns and cities across the UK will follow suit.

    Leeds is set to begin a similar scheme next year, while dozens of other places are also considering establishing a clean air zone (CAZ).

    The city council has been given government approval, and £29m, to implement a Clean Air Charging Zone.

    From 6 January 2020, the operators of vehicles will face charges of up to £50 per day to enter the zone.

    Put simply, CAZs are designed to cut pollution and encourage people to drive less polluting vehicles, including electric and more modern petrol and diesels, external.

    Drivers of the most polluting vehicles can be charged up to £100 a day to enter areas where councils believe the air to be toxic - often in town and city centres.

    Barnsley Council is being accused of a "dereliction of duty" by trade union Unison over potential plans to scrap its school meals service.

    It comes after the union revealed senior officers at Barnsley Council are considering a council report which recommends the service is scrapped, because it doesn't expect to make a profit.

    Jordan Stapleton from Unison says: "The council currently feed about 8,000 children in Barnsley, so if they end the service it's going to cause chaos for schools, who will be scrambling around trying to find another provider.

    "It's going to cause a lot of anxiety and huge problems for children, some of whom only get one warm meal a day and that's at school."

    A Barnsley Council spokesperson says: "We're currently in confidential discussions with the trade unions as part of an agreed process we use to look at different ways of delivering our services.

    "At this point in time, a number of options are being discussed."

    A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of the theft of a motor vehicle, criminal damage and dangerous driving in Hull.

    The teenager was seized by police in connection with a string of incidents in Hull city centre yesterday.

    Humberside Police say he remains in custody as the investigation continues.
