  3. High levels of drugs found in Humber estuarypublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

High levels of painkillers and antidepressants have been found in the Humber estuary as part of a new study.

    The Humber Bridge

Researchers from Hull University and Leeds University examined water samples in the area over a 12-month period to look for traces of various drug compounds.

They found high rates of several drugs including the painkiller diclofenac, while 97% of samples had traces of ibuprofen - one of the highest concentrations ever reported around the world.

Samples were taken from 11 estuaries around the UK for comparison and the Humber was found to have the overall highest concentration of drugs.

Researchers said the prevalence of pharmaceutical pollution raised concerns over the impact on animals living in the estuary.

Professor Jeanette Rotchell, from the Department of Biological and Marine Science at the University of Hull, said: "Particularly with the growing threat of antibiotic resistance, this is a serious concern.”

The team, which worked with the Catalan Institute for Water Research in Spain, said more research was needed to help shape and inform regulations and policy to protect freshwater environments.

  7. 'Harsh punishments' for petty crimes revealed in archivespublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

Now his forlorn expression can be seen, along with a number of others, in an exhibition of criminal records from the 19th Century detailing the punishments dished out for petty crime in North Yorkshire.

The Victorian records on show also point to punishments given to women, with one serving three months’ hard labour in 1872 for stealing a coat.

Also on display will be plans and records from the now closed Northallerton Prison, showing the site of the treadmill and revealing the names of those sentenced to be confined with hard labour or, worst of all, transported.

Margaret Boustead, head of archives and records management at North Yorkshire County Council says: “We’ll be seeing how desperate poverty drove people to commit petty crimes, as well as exploring stories of daring highway robbery and calculated murder.”

Archives at Dusk is on show at North Yorkshire County Record Office on Thursday 16 May.
