  15. North Yorkshire council defends use of £2,000 dronepublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 29 April 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

North Yorkshire County Council has dismissed claims that it will use a £2,000 drone to "expand state surveillance".

    A drone

A campaign group called for guidelines to be drawn up to ensure drones were not used to spy on taxpayers without "good reason" after it emerged the local authority had bought the drone.

Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch, said: "There's a real risk that drones could be used by councils to expand the surveillance state.

"There should be clear safeguards in place to make sure authorities make the best of new technologies without having free license to snoop on the public in the absence of good reason."

Council leader Carl Les said the drone would be used to support a wide range of council services, such as for an aerial survey of traffic congestion for its highways division.

Other uses of the drone could include inspections by the authority's trading standards officers on roofing work, looking for planning breaches or to boost health and safety.

  19. New Bingley festival to launch on August weekendpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 29 April 2019

A new festival is set to take place on the dates originally set aside for the cancelled Bingley Music Live, it's been confirmed.

    BINGLEY MUSIC LIVE

The Bingley Weekender event, set up by Bingley Rugby Club and SSD Concerts, will bring "international touring artists, great food and street theatre" to the rugby club's grounds, organisers say.

Bradford Council announced last week that Bingley Music Live (pictured) would not be held this year due to a £300,000 loss in 2018.

Ticket details and the line-up for Bingley Weekender, which will take place from 30 August until 1 September, are due to be announced later this week.
