Resident Mohammed Yusuf said he was staggered to see the rubbish lying at the junction of Sufton Street and Roseberry Street.

"I've never seen anything like it. It was giving off a very foul smell, there was such a stink coming from it that it was overwhelming. I wouldn't want my kids - anyone's kids - touching it."

Karl Battersby from Kirklees Council, said: "We take a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping and littering. It's selfish and lazy.

"We've arranged for all rubbish to be cleared as soon as possible and are investigating to see if we can identify those responsible."

  11. Future of small Dales school under scrutinypublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 30 April 2019

The proposed closure of a small school in North Yorkshire is due to be discussed by councillors later.

    CLAPHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL

Clapham Primary School in the Dales, which is about 150-years-old, has seen a fall in the number of pupils in recent years, with a total of 28 children now attending.

Hundreds of people responded to a consultation on the school's future, and North Yorkshire County Council had agreed to delay a decision on whether to shut it.

Members of Clapham Community Action Group said it was clear residents felt a local primary school was critical to attract young families into rural communities.

Residents have raised concerns over the loss of vital infrastructure, such as primary schools and GP surgeries.

Meanwhile, the action group said the school's governing body had found pupil forecasts were higher than first anticipated and as a result had submitted a development plan to make the school financially sustainable.

  13. Tram-train reaches half-million milestone in six monthspublished at 08:25 British Summer Time 30 April 2019

About half-a-million journeys have so far been made on the new tram-train service between Sheffield and Rotherham, it's been announced.

    Sheffield-Rotherham tram-train

The UK's first hybrid tram-train service opened in October last year, about two years late to get running with costs increasing from £15m to £75m.

In Sheffield city centre, it travels on the city's regular tram tracks before switching onto rails - taking passengers to and from Parkgate in Rotherham.

The tram-train was involved in a crash on its first day of service, being derailed in a collision with a lorry in Attercliffe.

Earlier this month, the service was suspended after a fault was found on one of its vehicles meaning safety checks had to be carried out on all its vehicles.

Depending on its success, the tram-train service could continue running after the end of its two-year trial.

Tim Bilby, managing director of tram-train operator Stagecoach, says reaching the half-million mark is a "fantastic achievement" and has exceeded the firm's hopes for the service.

Shanmuganathan Santhrasekaram, 39, was found to have two birds' nests in the food storage and preparation area of his Prima takeaway on Cottingham Road.

There were pigeons in the nests and one flew off through an open window when officers arrived, in April last year.

Officers also discovered signs of rat activity, dirty disused equipment, broken lighting, raw meat stored next to soft drink bottles, and an offensive “strong odour”.

Mr Santhrasekaram was asked how long the birds and rats had been a problem and he said he “wasn’t aware there was an issue”.

The takeaway was closed down until he made improvements.

The takeaway reopened, but conditions deteriorated again with a barefoot child found sitting on the food preparation counter and a hole in the staff toilet, large enough to see through to the residential accommodation on the next floor.

After the takeaway was shut down again, Santhrasekaram, of Grangeside Avenue, went on to take £7,393 worth of orders through an online food delivery service, preparing his food at a premises owned by a friend.

Appearing at Hull Crown Court, Santhrasekaram admitted a series of food hygiene and unfair trading offences and was sentenced to a 12-month community sentence and 180-hours of unpaid work.

Since the second closure, Santhrasekaram has been given one-to-one coaching sessions from council officers and Prima now has a hygiene rating of four out of five.
