    Five buildings in Yorkshire have won prestigious awards aimed at highlighting "great architecture" across the country.

    The awards, for two buildings in South Yorkshire, one in North Yorkshire and two in West Yorkshire, were presented by the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) at a special ceremony in Leeds last night.

    The winners were

    • Mercia School in Sheffield (pictured above)
    • The Hollis Building in Sheffield
    • The Weston at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, near Wakefield
    • The Great Barn at Bolton Abbey
    • Merrion House in Leeds

    Stephen Hill, Riba regional jury chair, said: "Whether careful adaptations of historic buildings, the reinvigoration of a tired 70s office or a completely new building, these are all thoughtful and considered projects each exhibiting their own special qualities."

  3. Queen to take up permanent residence at York Minster?published at 09:35 British Summer Time 17 May 2019

    New plans could see a statue of the Queen installed at York Minster as well as the creation of the city's first public square to be built in centuries.

    The proposals are included in York Minster's Neighbourhood Plan, which is aimed at improving the precinct area around the historic cathedral.

    Queen Elizabeth Square is part of a scheme to improve Duncombe Place at the landmark’s west front, by creating a new civic space for York and a ceremonial space for the county.

    A life-sized statue of the Queen would also be installed on one of the empty niches at the front of the Minster.

  4. 'Steaming drunk' crash report woman arrestedpublished at 09:10 British Summer Time 17 May 2019

    A driver who reported a crash in Sheffield was arrested because she was "steaming drunk", police say.

    Sheffield North East Neighbourhood Policing Team said the woman "promptly found herself in the cells" on Thursday.

    South Yorkshire Police said: "When you come to report a road traffic collision you have been involved in, it’s best not to do it when you are steaming drunk."

    A man's been arrested in York in connection with a serious sexual assault earlier this month.

    A woman was attacked by a man on Nunnery Lane at about 23:45 on on 7 May.

    Det Sgt Mark Jackson, said: "I'd like to reassure the community that we have arrested a man, who does not live in the York area and that extensive inquiries are ongoing."

    The arrested man has been released on bail while the investigation continues.

  7. Chickens have 'positive impact' on HMP Leeds inmatespublished at 08:20 British Summer Time 17 May 2019

    A jail plagued by drugs and violence has been praised for helping prisoners by letting them care for chickens.

    About 50 free range birds are kept in an outdoor area at HMP Leeds known as the Chicken Wing.

    Eggs produced by the birds are used in the kitchen or sold to staff.

    Inspectors said the initiative was having a positive impact and giving inmates "a sense of achievement".

    But a report by Independent Monitoring Board said there was still extensive drug use and concerning levels of violence at the jail.

    After 20 years in the planning, a new stand has been opened at Leeds Emerald Headingley Stadium.

    The opening came last night as fans took their seats for Leeds Rhinos' clash with Castleford Tigers in the Super League derby.

    On Sunday, the fifth Royal London One-Day International cricket match between England and Pakistan will also take place there.

    Gary Hetherington, Leeds Rhinos chief executive, said: "It was always an aim to try to complete the vision of Headingley.

    "With what's been done with the cricket ground and the rugby ground and the old Emerald Headingley Stadium as it is now, it really is a great legacy for the people of Leeds - and the county as well."

  9. Missing Doncaster mum and girl 'safe and well'published at 07:32 British Summer Time 17 May 2019

    A missing mother and her two-year-old daughter who police said seemed to have "disappeared off the face of the Earth" after last being seen in South Yorkshire have been found.

    Sebjana Myzeqari, 24, and two-year-old toddler Enissa had not been seen or heard from since they were spotted in Doncaster on 2 April.

    Earlier this week, South Yorkshire Police said officers were "incredibly concerned" for the pair's safety.

    They have now been found "safe and well", according to South Yorkshire Police.

    The force has tweeted saying, external: "Thank you to everyone who shared our appeal, your support is appreciated."

    A Hull MP has called for Marks & Spencer to return to Hull and open an outlet at the city's Paragon Station.

    Diana Johnson, Labour MP for Hull North, told the House of Commons how the retailer had closed its store on Whitefriargate after 88 years.

    She said: "There are vacant units in our railway station and local MPs have been asking for consideration to be given to Marks & Spencer opening a Simply Food outlet in the station, as happens in many other stations up and down the land."

    The MP also said there needed to be a debate about the management of train stations claiming: "The system we have at the moment is not working for passengers".

    Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom said the closure of Marks & Spencer was a "local tragedy" and suggested she call an adjournment debate to raise her "particular local concerns" about the station.

    A woman in her 20s has been arrested in North Yorkshire after officers seized suspected class A drugs, mobile phones, cash and other suspected drug paraphernalia.

    The woman was arrested at Aismunderby Close in Ripon and has since been released while under investigation.

    The arrest comes as officers continue to crack down on “county lines” drug dealing.

    This is the term used where criminals based in large urban areas exploit young and vulnerable people, using violence and threats to force them to sell, store, and transport drugs to smaller county towns on their behalf.

    It takes its name from the phone lines used to communicate between towns.

    Overweight and obese teenagers in East Yorkshire could soon be prescribed exercise by their GPs.

    The move is being considered after a project for adults called Live Well, led by the University of Hull, saw 84% of those taking part losing weight and lowering their blood pressure.

    A similar project which would refer people to a 26-week fitness programme is now being developed for young people in East Yorkshire.

    The University of Bradford has been awarded nearly £300,000 to help improve the job prospects of graduates from minority backgrounds in the city.

    The university will carry out a three-year project using the money, which has come from the Office for Students.

    It will look at job coaching, developing a talent pool to meet recruitment and skills gaps, and supporting businesses to look at getting graduates into more jobs.

    A woman was arrested on suspicion of doing a "£500 trolley dash" at a supermarket in Sheffield.

    South Yorkshire Police say she "decided to re-enact Supermarket Sweep” at the Asda store on Chaucer Road this afternoon.

    The woman, from Loughborough, was located in Shiregreen and arrested on suspicion of theft, taking a vehicle without consent and driving without a licence or insurance.
