    The stadium safety officer in charge at the time of the Hillsborough disaster has been fined £6,500.

    Former secretary of Sheffield Wednesday, Graham Mackrell is the first person to be convicted of an offence relating to the tragedy.

    Mackrell, 69, of Stocking Pelham, Hertfordshire, failed to ensure there were enough turnstiles to prevent unduly large crowds building up.

    He was also ordered to pay £5,000 prosecution costs.

    A motorcyclist has suffered life-threatening injures after he came off his bike in East Yorkshire.

    Humberside Police said the rider, a man in his 60s, crashed his Honda SH 125 on the A1079, near Dunswell, close to the junction with Ken Smith Way at about 09:00 on Sunday.

    The force said the man suffered injuries to his torso, arm and head.

    No other vehicles were involved and no-one else was hurt.

    Humberside Police has appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

    Graham Mackrell, the safety officer at Hillsborough in 1989, has been fined £6,500 for risky turnstile arrangements at the Sheffield ground and ordered to pay £5,000 prosecution costs.

    Last month, a jury convicted Graham Mackrell, 69, of one offence under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

    He did not assign enough turnstiles for Liverpool fans with standing tickets at the FA Cup Semi final 30 years ago.

    The turnstiles were expected to process twice as many fans per hour as were recommended in the safety guidelines.

    That caused a large crowd to build up outside the ground.

    A world record attempt for the fastest tuk-tuk is due to take place in North Yorkshire later.

    Matt Everard, pictured above test driving at Southend seafront, will team up with his cousin Russell, who'll be his passenger in the vehicle, during the challenge at Elvington airfield, just outside York.

    The current record for the three-wheeled vehicle is 68mph and Matt says he got his tuk-tuk up to 60mph last month.

    Matt spent five months and thousands of pounds restoring his vehicle to be able to attempt to set a record in the decades-old rickshaw

    He says: "I first bought the vehicle after a boozy night online, so thought I might as well put it to good use."

    Hoax calls are contributing to delays to people trying to get through to the South Yorkshire Police non-emergency line, the force has said.

    Figures released by South Yorkshire Police show people who called the non-emergency number last month waited on average almost six minutes.

    One caller who dialled the 101 number was kept on hold for almost 50 minutes.

    The South Yorkshire Police call centre handles hundreds of thousands of calls every year and the force says some of these are from timewasters.

    Team leader Scott Thompson says: "It's incredibly frustrating for staff dealing with hoax calls because they know those calls are taking them away from people answer calls to genuine people more quickly."

  8. Four taken to hospital after Leeds house firepublished at 09:40 British Summer Time 13 May 2019

    Four people were treated in hospital after a blaze at a house in Leeds last night, the fire service has confirmed.

    Fire crews from Killingbeck and Moortown were called to the house, on Swarcliffe Banks in Swarcliffe, just before 23:00 last night.

    They found two neighbouring properties "heavily smoke-logged" and had to use specialist breathing equipment to tackle the blaze.

    Four people were taken to hospital for a precautionary check-up after suffering the effects of breathing in smoke.

    A petition started by a campaigner from Hull calling for a ban on netting being put on hedgerows is due to be debated in parliament later.

    Some builders use the nets to keep nesting birds away from construction sites, but the practice has been criticised by wildlife experts.

    The petition calling for it to become a criminal offence, external has been signed more than 350,000 times.

    Maggie Moran, who's behind the campaign, says: "My hope is that by forcing a debate in parliament we can put an end to this practice which is abhorrent, really."

    Responding to the petition in April, the government said: "Netting trees and hedgerows is only appropriate where genuinely needed to protect birds from harm during development."

    West Yorkshire Police is to recruit a new chief constable on a salary of more than £180,000.

    The force is replacing its former chief Dee Collins (pictured), who retired last month over "health issues".

    Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson said he was looking for a "dynamic, forward-thinking, chief officer" with "strong leadership ability".

    Interviews for the post will take place in June.

    The force is the fourth largest in England and Wales and has more than 5,000 officers.

    The successful candidate will be the county's third chief constable in seven years.

    A tweet from the school said it had been a "difficult weekend" for everyone concerned.

    "We are so thankful for all the all the help and support from our staff, our school community," it added.

    The school will not be open today.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal collision in Bradford.

    It happened just after 19:00 on Clayton Road on Friday evening and involved a white, black and orange KTM Duke 390cc motorcycle.

    The motorcycle was being ridden towards the village of Clayton along Clayton Road when it hit a traffic island, according to police.

    The motorcyclist died as a result of his injuries.

    Anyone who saw what happened is being asked to contact police.

    Police are searching for a mother and daughter from South Yorkshire who have not been seen "for a number of weeks".

    Sebjana Myzeqari and her two-year-old daughter, Enissa, were last seen on CCTV leaving the Flying Scotsman Health Centre on St Sepulchre Gate West in Doncaster on 2 April.

    Det Insp Anna Sedgwick said there was growing concern about them. They were only reported missing last week.

    She appealed for information so police can check the mother and daughter are safe.

    "We don't know that Sebjana has any family and friends in Doncaster," she said.

    "For this reason, we really need your help find out where they are. We want to make sure Sebjana and Enissa are safe and well."

    Ms Myzeqari is described as 5ft 5ins tall with shoulder-length, mousy brown hair.

    Enissa is described as having distinctive large brown eyes and brown curly hair.

  17. Investigation into teenager's 'tragic' ecstasy deathpublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 13 May 2019

    A police investigation is continuing this morning following the death of a 15-year-old girl in North Yorkshire who had apparently taken ecstasy.

    The girl was found collapsed in Applegarth Car Park in Northallerton at about 21:30 on Saturday.

    She was taken to hospital in Middlesbrough where she later died.

    Det Insp Jon Sygrove warned other people "to be cautious and aware of the potential consequences of taking the drug".

    "This is an incredibly sad and tragic event and police inquiries are ongoing to determine the events around the girl's death," he said.

    Mr Sygrove appealed for any witnesses to contact the force.
