    A 21-year-old man who was killed in a car crash in East Yorkshire has been named by police.

    Louis Samuel James Hornsby, from East Yorkshire, suffered fatal injuries in the incident on the B1230 Gilberdyke to Howden road on Sunday 12 May.

    He died after a black Vauxhall Corsa and a silver Mercedes C250 were involved in the collision which happened at about 18:15.

    A 45-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man who were arrested in connection with the incident have been released under investigation while inquiries continue, police say.

    A scheme to add floral colour to York city centre will see £70,000 spent on bedding plants, it's been revealed.

    City of York Council says it's looking for a company to plant spring and summer flowers, including pansies, wallflowers and geraniums.

    The contract is for four years and a council spokesman said no new or additional flowerbeds will be created under the plans.

    An East Yorkshire MP is calling for more action to tackle child poverty in the city.

    Labour MP for Hull West and Hessle, Emma Hardy, says a new report by the End Child Poverty Coalition shows a third of all children in Hull live in poverty.

    The MP says: "St Andrew's and Dockland and Central ward are the worst affected. In those wards, six in 10 children are living in poverty.

    "The other statistics show a difference in life expectancy across the constituency as well. These are figures which should shame us here in 2019."

    The MP is due to host an event in Parliament today where the End Child Poverty Coalition is expected to present its findings to politicians.

    An independent investigation into the police's response to historic child sexual exploitation in Rotherham is coming to an end.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been looking into allegations that South Yorkshire Police failed to protect children between 1999 and 2011.

    Of the 91 independent investigations that form part of Operation Linden, 64 investigations – more than 70% – are now complete, the IOPC said.

    A total of 13 officers are currently under investigation.

    The findings of the investigation, which started last July, will be shared with South Yorkshire Police following its conclusion, according to the IOPC.

    Leeds-based Asda could be listed on the stock market after its merger with supermarket rival Sainsbury's was blocked by the competition authorities.

    Judith McKenna, chief executive of Asda's owner Walmart, has told staff such a listing is being considered.

    But, she told managers at an event in Leeds that any listing could "take years".

    It comes after the Competition and Markets Authority blocked its merger with rival Sainsbury's.

    The CMA was concerned the tie-up would raise prices for consumers, raise prices at the supermarkets' petrol stations and lead to longer checkout queues.

    It has left the giant US retailer Walmart looking at options for the supermarket chain it bought twenty years ago.

    The 18-year-old man was arrested yesterday evening, police say.

    It's in connection with a report of a 27-year-old woman who was raped at about 09:30 yesterday morning on a grassed area near Ulverston Road, Woodseats.

    Police officers are still appealing for information into the incident.

    A wanted man who managed to escape from the police by dropping through a home-made trapdoor in his home in Leeds last month hasn't been so lucky the second time around...

    The wanted man slipped past officers in April by dropping into the hole which lead under the house to his garden.

    West Yorkshire Police joked at the time it was 1-0 to him.

    Today, police have tweeted: "Update on our bolthole man, he was arrested yesterday after our Ops support team attended his home address.

    "Again attempting to escape down the bolthole, but not this time.

    "Re match over 1-0 this time to WYP."

    Plans for the next stage of York Minster's multi-million pound renovation work have been revealed.

    Work on two of the cathedral's 600-year-old stained glass windows is set to begin next week.

    Staff at the Minster, which hold the largest collection of medieval stained glass in the country, say the windows, which are 70ft from the ground, currently have no protection from the elements.

    Six centuries of exposure have caused the glass to crack and buckle in places, allowing in water.

    Sarah Brown, director of York Glaziers Trust, said: “The conservation work includes removing all 72 panels from both windows over the next nine months for gentle cleaning and repair."

    Whitby is the only beach on the Yorkshire coast to be given a top award for cleanliness.

    It was among 71 beaches around the country to meet the high environmental and safety standards needed to receive the international Blue Flag.

    Whitby, which is managed by Scarborough Borough Council, was also among the 137 beaches around the country which have been presented with a Seaside Award.

    A number of beaches which the authority manages were also given Seaside Awards, they are Filey, Runswick Bay, Cayton Bay, Sandsend, Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough North Bay.

    The following East Riding of Yorkshire Council beaches also got Seaside Awards: Bridlington North and South, Wilsthorpe, Fraisthorpe, Hornsea, Withernsea and Flamborough's Danes Dyke and South Landing.

    Keep Britain Tidy announced the awards, which they say "means beach-goers can feel more relaxed in a setting that is environmentally considerate".

    A total of 71 suspected paedophiles were arrested last year by a new specialist Regional Organised Crime Unit working in Yorkshire, police have revealed.

    The job of the unit, created a year ago and based in Yorkshire, is to "identify those who use the internet to contact children for sexual purposes and to safeguard victims and potential victims", according to police.

    Members of the team use social media channels, instant messaging apps and other online platforms where it's known children can be groomed.

    Det Insp Jonathan Best said: “Our ability to identify those posing the greatest risk to children in the region has been significantly advanced by this unit.

    “The overwhelming evidence gathered has meant so far every single person arrested and who has subsequently gone through the court process has been convicted.

    "Last year the unit’s officers identified and protected 74 vulnerable children."

    A car which was covered in stickers in a bid to raise cash for a South Yorkshire charity has raised more than £80,000.

    Each sticker has the names of individuals or companies which have sponsored the car, with proceeds going to Sheffield children's hospice Bluebell Wood.

    Stuart Dixon, who came up with the idea of raising thousands of pounds to charity, now says the once purple Jaguar is full of stickers.

    A museum celebrating the history and culture of Yorkshire's waterways closes for good today after experiencing financial problems.

    A liquidator was appointed for the Yorkshire Waterways Museum in Goole after it could no longer "cover its own costs".

    The centre, based in the town's docks, features a collection of boats, including "Tom Pudding" canal barges which were used to transport coal from Yorkshire pits.

    Clare Hunt, from the museum, says: "We've been struggling for many years and we've had previous appeals, but you can't go on appealing for short-term help. What you need is a long-term solution.

    "It's not just our charity, it's other charities in Goole, all struggling, all chasing the same little bits of funding and that stops. So how do you continue to deliver that service while waiting for someone else to step in?"

    Police are appealing for information and witnesses after a 27-year-old woman was raped in Sheffield.

    The woman was walking near Ulverston Road, Woodseats at about 09:30 yesterday when the attack happened, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    Officers have been looking at CCTV images and are asking for any potential witnesses to come forward.

    The alleged attacker is described as a white man, in his late teens and about 5ft 6ins tall.

    He is said to have been wearing a black jacket with a green top underneath, black trousers and black trainers.

    Filming is due to continue in Scarborough today for a new BBC sitcom set in and named after the famed North Yorkshire seaside town.

    It's been written by Derren Litten, creator of ITV's award-winning Benidorm, and its cast includes comedian Jason Manford and Coronation Street's Catherine Tyldseley.

    Cameras have been spotted in Scarborough's famous pub, The Newcastle Packet and crews are due in the Penny Arcade later.

    A spokesperson for the BBC said: "Scarborough follows the lives and loves of a handful of residents in the sometimes sunny beach resort, where every week the locals gather in a karaoke bar to swap gossip and belt out 80s classics.

    Chris Sussman, the BBC's head of comedy, said: “Derren writes with humour, heart and soul and we couldn’t be more pleased to be bringing all that to BBC One. Get ready for plenty of singalong moments.”
