The colourful stone parapet was put in place earlier this year as part of a £7.6m scheme to safeguard the long-term future of the crumbling structures.

Scarborough Council has now submitted a planning application to return it to a more traditional colour after a number of complaints from people in the town.

Councillors will vote to draw down £5m from the Sheffield City Region and about £3.3m from the Northern Powerhouse body to upgrade the A630 West Moor Link Road.

The road stretches from the town centre, along Wheatley Hall Road before heading past Edenthorpe and Armthorpe and joins junction four of the M18.

Council bosses acknowledge problems along the route with congestion, which is made worse by a narrow passing under a railway bridge between Wheatley Hills and Edenthorpe.

Figures show 240 buses travelling in both directions use this part of the route every day, constituting a "pinch point".

Highways chiefs have said additional road capacity can be achieved by creating an additional lane to result in two lanes on each side of the carriageway.

Improvements will also include space for a wider pavement with cycling facilities.

Council bosses say the work will reduce peak journey times by about seven minutes, with work starting in July and lasting until March 2020.

The RNLI has issued an appeal for people to wear life jackets while in harbours after a man had to be rescued from the water in Scarborough.

    Scarborough's lifeboat

The man is said to have been in distress after trying to get to a boat using an inflatable kayak.

The crew of another boat in the outer harbour pulled the man to safety before the lifeboat arrived.

First aid was given by staff from Scarborough lifeboat station and the coastguard, but he wasn't taken to hospital.

In a statement on Facebook, the RNLI in Scarborough has now issued this plea: "It’s an old saying that more people die in harbours than at sea. You should always wear a life jacket."
