Nick Coultish, who was elected to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council for the first time earlier this month, "repeatedly made anti-Islam comments online, external," according to an article posted by BuzzFeed.

The 21-year-old today issued an apology for "off the cuff comments I made years ago at the time of terrorist attack in the UK".

In a statement, he said: "These comments were made before university at a low point for me, I was upset and grieving and trying to make sense of the lives lost.

"My comments were wholly reactionary and unthoughtful, I was referring to radical Islamic extremism, of course, not real Muslims who are peaceful and live with British values.

"I was young, not yet involved in politics in a big way and naive. I'm sorry for any confusion or any offence my historic tweets caused."

Cllr Coultish, from Goole said he has since deleted the comments, which were posted in 2017, adding that they were not made "in a professional capacity".

Earlier this week, the Muslim Council of Britain formally asked the UK's human rights watchdog to investigate accusations of Islamophobia in the Conservative Party.
