  10. Hull's 'unviable' House of Fraser store to closepublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 17 June 2019

    James Hoggarth
    Journalist, BBC Radio Humberside

It was a sad sight this morning at House of Fraser in Hull after it was confirmed the store is set to close.

    Closing down signs

It's a sense of "here we go again" after it was announced last year that the store would be saved, although it now looks like that's not the case.

Earlier this year, plans were submitted to redevelop the building, with House of Fraser remaining on two floors and other shops and restaurants on the upper levels.

But in a statement, the retailer now says: "We have been working in conjunction with the landlords while they explored opportunities to develop the Hull site.

"However, the revised space has left House of Fraser with a store that is unviable and we believe will not live up to the standard our customers expect."

The 81 members of staff who are affected by the decision were told on Friday and House of Fraser says it hopes to "re-locate them where possible within the group".

The new figures, part of an annual safety report for the Harrogate area, also show 98 incidents of hate crime occurred during that time.

Community safety and CCTV manager, Julia Stack, said a number of the burglaries were identified as “two-in-one jobs," where a burglar enters a home specifically to steal keys to a vehicle, with high-performance cars a specific target.

Ms Stack also addressed the 4,569 incidents caught on Harrogate’s CCTV system from April 2018 to March 2019, with the haul producing 276 pieces of evidence.

An incident could range from anything including a sighting of a missing person or a vehicle of interest, to violent offences or shoplifting, she said.

Harrogate remained a safe district when it came to crime, Ms Stack added.

“From a community safety point of view, we still live in a very low-crime area."
