Mary Creagh, chair of the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC), had called for clothes companies to be taxed to help pay for better recycling.

The Wakefield Labour MP said: "Fashion producers should be forced to clear up the mountains of waste they create."

Among the proposals from the EAC were:

    • A 1p charge per garment on producers to fund better recycling of clothes
    • A Ban on incinerating or landfilling unsold stock which can be reused or recycled instead
    • Tax changes to reward re-use, repair and recycling - to support responsible fashion companies.

Ministers say they're focusing on a tax on single-use plastic in packaging rather than a tax on cheap fashion items.

They say they will consider a levy on clothes alongside plans for making firms in different sectors more responsible for their waste, but no decisions will be made on this until 2025.

Its shops and commercial units are now not set to open until December at the earliest.

York Central MP Rachael Maskell says the delays are “very disappointing” and she has called on City of York Council to be “more transparent” about the struggles facing the project.

A council report says the project is a minimum of 16 weeks behind schedule, but there is a “potential further delay which as yet is unquantified”.

The stadium was due to be finished in May, but the scheme was hit by delays in February, when the council said it would not be ready in time for the start of York City’s 2019-20 campaign.

A spokesman for York City Football Club’s board of directors said: “We are seeking clarity from City of York Council on the timescales for completion of the stadium.

“If the project is delayed further it will, inevitably, provide challenges for the club’s board of directors, supporters, and the footballing authorities.”

After hitting mother-of-two Mrs Wileman, who was 58, on 14 September, the lorry careered into the side of a house, partially destroying the building.

Four men were jailed in February for between 10-and-a-half and 13 years over her death.

A cyclist who saw the crash described the lorry as "out of control, swerving all over the road".

Prosecutors said it was travelling at more than twice the 30mph speed limit.

A vodka bottle and drug taking paraphernalia were recovered from the vehicle.

Mrs Wileman's family felt that the sentences were not tough enough.

Her brother, Johnny Wood, is due to meet Mr Buckland with local MP, Stephanie Peacock, later today.

  15. Leeds clean air zone delay 'disappointing' - Council bosspublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 18 June 2019

A delay to the roll-out of a clean air zone in Leeds is "extremely disappointing", a council boss has said.

A general view of LeedsImage source, PA

It was announced this morning that the city-wide clean air zone in Leeds, which was meant to be in operation next year, has been "significantly postponed".

From 6 January 2020, operators of heavy polluting vehicles like lorries or taxis would have faced charges of up to £50 per day to enter the zone.

However, this now won't happen because equipment won't be ready in time, Leeds City Council has said.

The delay is "extremely disappointing", according to Councillor James Lewis, the council's deputy leader.

Councillor Lewis says: "Leeds City Council has worked incredibly hard to make sure that the Clean Air Zone would be delivered on time, successfully meeting a number of challenging deadlines set by the government.

"The government now needs to outline new timescales they are confident can be delivered in order to give residents and businesses across the country clarity and certainty about the future of these schemes."

  20. Judge's plea to divorcing Sheffield businessmanpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 18 June 2019

A High Court judge has urged a Sheffield businessman and his estranged Austrian wife to agree a truce after being told how they had run up £1m in lawyers' bills while fighting over less than £2m.

    William CookImage source, Google

Mr Justice Holman said engineering firm boss Sir Andrew Cook and interior designer Baroness Angelika Hirsch-Stronstorff had spent "very, very disproportionate" amounts on legal costs following the breakdown of a three-year marriage.

He said they should try to reach an out-of-court settlement which was reasonably fair and put their fight over money "to bed".

Sir Andrew is chairman of William Cook, a firm based in Sheffield which produces components for the rail, energy and defence industries.

"You have spent £1m in costs arguing about £1m or so," said Mr Justice Holman. "It seems utterly, utterly ridiculous."

He said "very disproportionate" amounts had been spent and added: "We are only arguing about somewhere between £1m and £2m between people who are worth somewhere between £25m and £30m. It is pretty depressing, frankly."
