He told the Commons: "This week we have had many big demonstrations, but there was a smaller one from Women in Prison.

"I don't believe, on the whole, that women should go to prison unless they are very violent.

"Can we have a debate on women and prisons, at the moment, they come out, no housing, no support, no counselling, and no work."

Commons Leader Mel Stride replied: "The female prison population is a minority number but there are issues as to whether incarceration in that form is appropriate in all instances as you have suggested."

He said Mr Sheerman's remarks on the issue "will be heard".

West Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Police saw reporting of transgender hate crimes more than treble over three years.

Is the clear rise in the reporting of transphobic hate crime due to the much discussed palpable rise of rightwing populism, or a more supportive environment that allows for transgender people to be able to speak about abuses?

No robust data on the UK trans population exists. The Government Equalities Office estimate that it sits approximately somewhere between 200,000-500,000.

But human trauma has - or at least should - never be about statistics. And a marginalised community - often also within the LGBT world - speaking more and more about hate crime may be a disturbing drop in the bucket.
