The announcement follows a series of delays to the project, which was originally due to be finished in May.

A report published last week said: "The building contractor is anticipated to complete on-site works early in September".

But councillors were told last night that further information from the building contractor indicated that completion will not now be achieved by then.

It’s the second blow this month to those behind the project after a report claimed the retail units on the site wouldn’t be completed until Christmas.

When finished, both York Football Club and York City Knights rugby league team will play home fixtures at the ground. There'll also be a sports hall, climbing facilities and swimming pool.

The council says it's working with contractors to understand why there has been another delay and says: "We appreciate the past few months have been frustrating for fans and residents.

"We are as disappointed as anyone that the site couldn’t open as early as we’d hoped.”
