    A cyclist has been taken to hospital after being injured in a hit-and-run in Harrogate this morning.

    The cyclist was knocked over by a wagon-type vehicle on Hookstone Road at about 08:45.

    The driver did not stop.

    The cyclist is currently being treated for his injuries in hospital.

    Officers are keen to hear from anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident.

    A controversial ring road scheme on an urban park in Barnsley has been given the final go-ahead by councillors.

    Barnsley Council has been involved in wrangles with objectors over plans to put a gyratory scheme on Penny Pie Park, between the M1 and town centre, since the proposals were announced last summer.

    All alternatives have been investigated and rejected as more problematic than the current plan, which will see a one-way system installed around the perimeter of the park to ease a congestion bottleneck.

    Although the scheme was approved, council leader Sir Steve Houghton acknowledged the weight of resistance to the proposals.

    He said: “There are arguments on both sides.

    “We recognise there are strong objections from some residents. Their protests have been fully recognised. These are never easy decisions."

    The Save Penny Pie Park group has already said it will take legal advice, with the intention of taking the decision to judicial review.

    There's "major disruption" to trains across Yorkshire after lines were blocked following damage to overhead wires.

    National Rail said the issue between Grantham and Peterborough had "seen all lines blocked" with the following routes affected:

    • LNER between Glasgow Central, Edinburgh, Leeds, Harrogate, Newark North Gate and London Kings Cross.
    • Grand Central between Sunderland, Bradford Interchange and London Kings Cross.
    • Hull Trains between Hull and London Kings Cross.
    • East Midlands Trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich.

    According to National Rail's website , external"trains between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 120 minutes or revised" with the disruption expected to continue until the end of the day.

    LNER advised customers "to defer travel to tomorrow" while East Midlands suggested using alternative routes.

    A Hull MP has called for an abortion law which "puts women and their reproductive healthcare needs front and centre".

    Yesterday, MPs backed amendments which require the government to liberalise abortion and extend same-sex marriage to Northern Ireland if devolution is not restored.

    Writing on Twitter, Labour MP for Hull North Diana Johnson said this was "brilliant news" and thanked "all those strong, brave women and men who have fought for change for so long".

    Same sex-marriage is not legal in Northern Ireland and abortion is only allowed in limited circumstances.

    While the votes do not automatically change the law, they compel government to make the changes if devolution at Stormont is not restored by 21 October.

    A diver who helped rescue 12 boys and their football coach from flooded caves in northern Thailand has been honoured for his actions.

    Jason Mallinson, from Huddersfield, received an honorary doctorate from his home-town university following the rescue operation in July 2018.

    He was award the doctorate from the University of Huddersfield's School of Human and Health Sciences.

    Mr Mallinson brought four of the boys to safety.

    More than 14,000 people have responded to a public consultation looking at congestion issues in Harrogate and Knaresborough.

    North Yorkshire County Council has thanked people for taking time to take part in the 12-week consultation which ended yesterday.

    Council officers will now begin to analyse and collate the responses with a report set to be published next month.

    According to Move More, the organisers of the attempt, a total of 664 people played the game in a city car park back in May.

    It's now been confirmed by Guinness World Records that they smashed the world record, beating the previous number of 621.

  8. Crete crash: Two British holidaymakers die in Maliapublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 10 July 2019

    Two British holidaymakers have been killed in a crash on the Greek island of Crete.

    Zara Crane-Davies, 41, from Manchester and 18-year-old Luke Hall from Dewsbury died in the crash in Malia at about 06:00 local time on Monday.

    They were travelling with two others in a rented 4x4 when it crashed with a stationary motorcycle, local media said.

    Another woman was seriously injured. An 18-year-old man escaped serious injury.

    Mr Hall, an apprentice builder, is a former pupil of St John Fisher Catholic Academy in Dewsbury.

    A statement from the school said its community was "devastated to hear about the tragic loss of Luke".

    "It was the worst point of my life but probably the most important to turn me into the athlete and person I know I can be," Wilson, 23, told BBC Sport.

    "Today I just want to wake up and be happy and do something I love."

    The Commonwealth all-around champion added: "I honestly couldn't care less about Olympic gold medals, followers, fame, money."

    The Samaritans is making an appeal to coincide with the Great Yorkshire Show this week and the charity says figures show that one farmer takes their own life every week in the UK.

    David Moyles, from The Samaritans, said farmers have "no natural outlet" to talk about "what's going on in their heads".

    He said: "Essentially, they get on with life, if something's broken they go and fix it, they're doers, they manage their own circumstances.

    "Mental health however is a totally different issue."

    Police in Sheffield have issued a CCTV image of a woman they want to identify over the alleged theft of a man's wallet, containing a picture of his dead father.

    The man was paying at a Go Local store in the Wincobank area of the city when he reportedly had his wallet stolen, along with the photograph of "tremendous sentimental value".

    South Yorkshire Police want to trace the woman pictured above who is believed to have "vital information" about the theft which occurred between 11:00 and 11:20 on 24 June.

    Officers hunting for a passenger who disappeared after getting off a coach at a North Yorkshire service station have issued a new picture of the man.

    Henry Fullaton, from Glasgow, was on the coach from Scotland to Hull when the vehicle stopped at Wetherby Services on the A1 at around 4.30pm on Tuesday.

    The 68-year-old, who is also known as Davey, left his belongings on the bus - including his phone, passport, bag and medication - but did not return to collect them or continue his journey.

    He is described as white, around 5ft 7in and of medium build, with brown hair, and unshaven with stubble. He was wearing glasses and a grey top.

    North Yorkshire Police are asking anyone with information to call 999.

    A convicted robber is on the run after escaping from prison in Doncaster.

    Michael Wright, 44, from Doncaster, has been serving an indeterminate sentence at HMP Hatfield since 2011.

    However, South Yorkshire Police said he failed to return from day release on Thursday.

    He has links to the Balby and Woodlands areas but could also be in the Wakefield area.

    Anyone who sees Wright or knows where he could be is asked to call 999 immediately.

    The first in a series of road shows warning people about fraud is being held in Hull later.

    It's being organised by Humberside Police following an increase in the number of cases in the region.

    There were close to 7,000 victims last year who collectively lost more than £8.5m, the force said.

    The event will be taking place at St Stephen's Shopping Centre.

    Two men have been charged with murdering a man who was found dead in a Bradford road.

    The body of 20-year-old Mohammed Feazan Ayaz (pictured) was found in Saffron Drive on 1 July.

    Farekh Ejaz, 30, of Tower Road, Shipley, and Robert Wainwright, aged 26, of no fixed address, have been charged with his murder and are due to appear before Bradford Magistrates Court later.

    A third man, Suleman Khan, 20, of Sandford Road, Bradford, was charged with murder yesterday.

    West Yorkshire Police said two other men, both aged 27, have also been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody, as does a 47-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

    Two further men, aged 23 and 24, who were arrested for assisting an offender have been bailed pending further inquiries.

    In total 12 people have been arrested or charged in relation to Mr Ayaz's death.

  19. Yorkshire Water's environmental work 'unacceptable'published at 10:23 British Summer Time 10 July 2019

    Yorkshire Water demonstrated an "unacceptable level of performance" to protecting the environment, according to a new report by the Environment Agency.

    The firm was criticised after recording an increase in the number of serious pollution incidents in 2018 and, as a result, was given a two out of four star rating, external.

    Yorkshire Water said in a statement: "This level of performance is absolutely not reflective of the company’s ambition to protect the environment and falls far short of the standards required to meet our aim to be recognised as an industry leader.”

    It said steps taken to address the problem have lead to a 36% reduction in the number of pollution incidents in 2019 compared to the same period last year.

    Only one UK water company, Northumbrian Water, was awarded the highest four start rating.

    A man has been taken to hospital after being shot in Doncaster last night.

    It happened at about 21:50 on Chequer Avenue.

    South Yorkshire Police said the 24-year-old man suffered non life-threatening injuries.

    A cordon remains in place as officers investigate what happened.
