It happened yesterday evening at about 19:30 on Higham Road, Brampton Bierlow.
A man is said to have approached the boy grabbing him by his hips, removed his shirt and then tried to remove his shorts.
The alleged offender then ran off when a passerby shouted.
He is described as being white, of an average build, short dark hair and facial stubble.
He is reported to have been wearing an orange short-sleeved top, beige or sandy-coloured trousers which appeared dirty, especially below the knees and no shoes or socks.
Police in the area are asking witnesses or anybody who could have information as to who it was to get in touch.

Lubos Filek, 40, suffered burns to his hands and body after he smashed a window and poured petrol through the front door of Abbey Fisheries.
York Crown Court heard the attack on 21 March caused £100,000 of damage.
Filek, of Holmes Avenue, Selby was jailed for five years and eight months after he pleaded guilty to arson.
He was also jailed for an additional four months for breaching a previous suspended sentence.

Adam Waring, 29, jumped out of the transit van at the top of Trooper Lane, in Halifax, after being pursued by police on 4 June.
Bradford Crown Court heard how £1,600 of damage was caused when the vehicle rolled back down the hill and collided with the police car.
Waring, of Dunstan Street, Bolton, who was disqualified from driving at the time, was arrested in some undergrowth nearby.
He was jailed for 17 months after he pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance. He was also banned from driving for two years.
West Yorkshire Police have appointed John Robins as the force's new chief constable.
Mr Robins (above right), who first joined the force in 1990, replaces former chief Dee Collins who stood down earlier this year over "health issues".
He said: "Having spent my whole policing service in West Yorkshire, this is the culmination of an incredible and fulfilling journey for me from Police Constable to Chief Constable."
An e-fit has been released by police investigating a burglary in Doncaster.
It's reported that a man offered cleaning services to an elderly person on Alverley Lane, Balby, on 21 June.
Another person is then said to have entered the house and stolen jewellery.
Anybody who recognises the man in the e-fit is asked to get in touch with police.
Whitby Swing Bridge is to be closed on safety grounds for a number of weekends throughout the school summer holidays, the council has confirmed.
For the past couple of years vehicles have been banned from driving on the bridge as thousands of people flock to the seaside town.
For safety reasons the swing bridge will be closed to traffic as police try to keep pedestrians safe.
The bridge will be closed between 10:30 and 18:30 on Saturdays and Sundays from tomorrow until 1 September.

Writing on Twitter, Humberside Police's special operations chief inspector for firearms and marine policing James Glanfield said "such tragic events highlight the danger of any firearms".

His comments come on the eve of a fortnight-long national gun amnesty with police forces across the country urging people to hand in their unwanted guns and items of ammunition.
Private security staff have been granted legal powers by North Yorkshire Police and can now require people to reveal their name and address.
Workers from Eboracum UK Ltd will also be able to stop cyclists riding on footpaths in York, as well as controlling traffic in certain circumstance.
Police granted "more power to tackle antisocial behaviour" to eight members of staff who work as street rangers in the city.
Supt Int Lindsey Robson said: "York is already a very safe place, and by granting street rangers selected powers we can keep the millions of people who visit the city centre every year even safer.”
The street rangers will be able to require someone to give their name and address for road traffic offences, assault or criminal damage, or if they believe they are acting in an anti-social manner
The option to delegate powers was first granted to police forces in 2002, although they do not include the power to make an arrest.
The powers, which will be reviewed after 12 months, were granted by the chief constable who was "satisfied that they will be used appropriately and proportionally".
Carl Nickson, managing director of Eboracum UK Ltd, said the new powers "further professionalises our partnership with the police".

A mural painted by school children at Elsecar Reservoir in Barnsley has been vandalised.
Barnsley Council said the graffiti included swearing and hate crime messages, including an image of a Swastika.
The council has now repainted the mural and said it will work with police to put a stop to hate crime.

Changes to the design of outpatient clinics at York's new sports stadium have added to delays to the project.
York Teaching Hospital is one of the main partners for the 8,000-seat community stadium, and will provide outpatient services at the complex.
The NHS was supposed to provide design plans for their part of the project by May 2018 but the layouts were not received until last December according to a council report.
The development has suffered a number of delays since it was first proposed in 2009.
No fresh opening date for the venue has been revealed yet.
An elderly man had his wallet and cash taken after a woman talked herself into his Shipley house.
It's reported that the woman, who is described as being in her early twenties and speaking with an Eastern European accent, asked the homeowner for a drink.
The man gave the woman a glass of water who then made demands for money.
He then tried to eject her from his home on Bargrange Avenue, Shipley, but was unable to stop her taking his wallet and money.
The woman is described as being white and wearing dark clothing, with the incident happening at about 16:00 on 14 July.
