    Investigations are continuing after a string of incidents on 4 March as Sheffield Wednesday hosted Sheffield United.

    There was one incident prior to kick off as items were thrown inside Hillsborough Stadium with a bottle hitting someone in the face.

    Following the match - which ended in a scoreless draw - a number of people were seen fighting in the Leppings Lane area at about 21:30, where a firework was also thrown and a waiting coach damaged.

    Later that evening, at about 23:50, a number of people were left needing hospital treatment after fighting broke out at Bloo 88, on West Street, with bottles and chairs thrown, causing considerable damage to the pub.

    West Yorkshire Police want to identify the people in the video who are thought to have information relating to the disorder.

    Supt Paul McCurry said police were "dealing with the small group of people who are seemingly intent on causing trouble and ruining it for others who simply want to attend and enjoy the match".

    Robbers "armed with hammers and axes" smashed the windows of an Aston Martin parked in Bradford, demanding cash from the people inside before making off with a large amount of money.

    The Aston Martin was outside the Lord Clyde on Thornton Road when it was struck by a silver 4x4, with two or three suspects then smashing the windows of the car.

    Police say thieves took cash which their victims were carrying "for legitimate business purposes" before driving away in a blue car, believed to be similar to a Ford Ka.

    It's thought that following the incident at about 07:30 on Sunday 7 July, the suspects travelled away from the city centre towards Girlington.

    Det Insp Mark Taylor, said: “Although no one was injured this was very frightening for them, as the suspects were thought to be armed with hammers and axes.”

    Wildlife experts say there is no need for people to be afraid of bats after a two-year-old Hull boy was reportedly bitten in his cot in an "incredibly rare" incident.

    The Sun newspaper reported that the toddler needed a precautionary rabies vaccination, external after he was bitten by a bat that had found its way into his bedroom.

    But it was today confirmed that the disease has not been found in pipistrelles, the type of bat that is thought to have bitten him.

    The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust suspect the incident involved a young bat that had lost its way and said pipistrelles eat insects and only bite humans if they are handled.

    Louise Wilkinson, conservation policy and campaign manager, said: "The likelihood of being bitten by a bat is minuscule, people do not need to worry that this is going to happen if they've got bats nearby.

    She added that bats are protected by legislation and it is against the law to destroy or damage their roosts.

    The Bat Conservation Trust said numbers had declined in the last century but a combination of legislation and education had helped the partial recovery of some species, including the pipistrelle.

    Public Health England said it recommends a course of rabies vaccine as a "precautionary measure" for anyone who has been bitten by any species of bat.

    Officials in Bradford have voted to crack down on anti-Muslim hate crime by adopting a new definition of Islamophobia.

    It's been agreed following work with campaigners and Muslim faith leaders in the city.

    There are four definitions of Islamophobia included in the motion, which are:

    1. Inciting or carrying out acts of hatred and violence against people of the Islamic faith (Muslims).
    2. Direct or indirect acts of discrimination including policy and practice within organisations, which deny Muslims legitimate and fair access to opportunities, facilities and services because of their faith, beliefs and practice.
    3. Denying people of the Islamic faith the opportunity to practise their faith values, free of harassment, fear of violence against them or fear of incurring discrimination and hatred against them.
    4. Actions which perpetuate a climate of mistrust, fear and a sense of marginalisation about or within the Islamic community.

    Bradford Council also voted to accept a definition of anti-Semitism last summer.

    A suspected stolen car was forced off the road by pursuing police officers after it started driving on the wrong side of the carriageway into oncoming traffic.

    The incident happened on Prince of Wales Road on Sunday afternoon.

    South Yorkshire Police said officers were pursuing the vehicle after reports the occupants had tried to steal a television from the back of a lorry.

    The force said four men have been charged in connection with the incident.

  9. Rotherham tip re-opening would be an 'insult' - MPpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 17 July 2019

    A petition against the re-opening of a rubbish tip near Rotherham has been presented to Parliament.

    Sarah Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham, wants to prevent waste being dumped at the Droppingwell site in Kimberworth, which closed in the mid-90s.

    Grange Landfill Ltd was granted an Environment Agency (EA) permit in 2016 to take in up to 200,000 tonnes of waste per year at the site and has stated that it intends to prepare the site for use within the next 18 months.

    Ms Champion, who presented the petition, sad: "Should the site re-open, it would be an insult to local residents and campaigners who fought tirelessly against the tip more than two decades ago."

    According to the EA no waste can be disposed of at the site until their officers are satisfied that the necessary preparatory works have taken place.

    Grange Landfill Ltd declined to comment further on the situation.

    Organisers of a rowing weekend are being urged to allow men to represent the event for the first time in more than 170 years.

    The annual Whitby Regatta began in 1847 as a weekend of competition but now includes three days of entertainment.

    A local woman is selected each year to be Miss Regatta, and performs duties such as meeting dignitaries and starting a Sunday firework display.

    George Hutton is now campaigning for the role to include men.

    The 22-year-old from the town said: "Equality is becoming more and more important.

    "Times are changing and I feel it's only fair to the men of Whitby if there's a Mr Regatta."

    Campaigners locked in a "David and Goliath" battle have won their fight to stop a new motorway service station being built in South Yorkshire.

    Moto Hospitality Ltd wanted to build the new site on green belt land near junction 37 of the A1M.

    Opponents, who feared the development would have caused major traffic disruption, said they were "over the moon" to have won.

    Government planners ruled against Moto this week.

    Moto's plans included a petrol station, drive-through Costa Coffee, Greggs, M&S Simply Food, WH Smith, Burger King, an Arlo's restaurant, a games centre and a 562-space car park.

    Roads in Leeds will be closed to traffic for a day later this year to help the environment.

    Streets in Otley, Headingley and Hunslet are to be closed on Sunday, 22 September as part of World Car-Free Day.

    It will be the first of 11 such days planned by Leeds City Council.

    It was announced as environmental campaigners Extinction Rebellion blocked a major route into the city on a third day of protest.

    A dedicated children's hospital in Sheffield has been praised for the compassion and kindness of their staff by the care regulator.

    Sheffield Children's Hospital has been awarded a "good" rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which independently assess services across the country.

    The hospital helps children and parents throughout South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and across the UK.

    In the report, external, the CQC said staff were compassionate and treated patients and families with dignity and respect.

    However it also said that urgent and emergency services required improvement when it came to being safe.

    A spokesperson for the hospital said they were proud of their staff but would "continue to strive for improvement".

    A man has been arrested after a woman with dementia, who was on a trip to Bridlington, was punched in the face while wearing a badge saying "I have Alzheimer's please be patient".

    The 56-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident in a layby near to Bracey Bridge, in which Joy Watson, 61, suffered a broken eye socket.

    Mrs Watson, of Eccles, Salford, claimed a man had attacked her at the side of the A164 on Sunday 7 July, after she told him he was mistreating his dog.

    A man, from Wakefield, has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 GBH and has been released under investigation.

    Pupils at Swinton Academy have won an award for their greenhouse made out of recycled plastic bottles.

    A Hull artist is to deliver a guided walking tour through Hull city centre, describing a dystopian future where water has become a luxury item.

    Patrick Coyle will use a "futuristic local language" to explain how the people of Hull have adapted to new world, in which a polluted Humber Estuary glows a luminescent brown.

    The event, which is free with tickets available online, starts outside the Ferens Art Gallery at 20:30 tomorrow and is part of an ongoing exhibition called Is This Planet Earth?

    Exhibitions officer Claire Longrigg said: “The tour, which is set in the future, will encourage us to think about our role in the future of our city and the planet as a whole."
