    A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a report of a serious sexual assault in Harrogate, police say.

    It happened in the early hours of this morning.

    Jubilee Car Park on Union Street, which was shut for several hours while police carried out forensic inquiries, has now re-opened.

    The teenager remains in custody.

    An "intoxicated" motorist had an "amazingly lucky escape" when a wooden post smashed through his windscreen.

    It happened when the car crashed on the Western bypass near Skipton last night.

    The post pierced through the windscreen and dashboard and went into the passenger seat.

    North Yorkshire Police traffic officer Andrew Ingram said he approached the accident with caution fearing the occupants were seriously injured.

    He said on Twitter, external: "I dare not look.

    "To my amazement the driver had minor injuries and no passengers, but was very intoxicated."

    A light aircraft pilot who died alongside his passenger when he crashed near Beverley Airfield was not qualified to fly at night, an investigation has found.

    The 76-year-old pilot and his passenger died when his Cessna F172 Skyhawk crashed on farmland near the airport at about 18:30 on 10 October.

    He was flying from Scotland to Beverley in October but was delayed because of technical problems, meaning he would have to land in the dark.

    An investigation by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch found the pilot didn't hold a licence for night flying.

    The report, external also found the pilot was attempting to land after asking a friend to light up the airfield using his car's headlights.

    Rotherham’s 12 UKIP councillors have left the party en masse and joined the Brexit Party, it has been confirmed.

    Group leader Cllr Allen Cowles confirmed the switch, which has been formally recorded on council papers ahead of next week’s meetings schedule, but declined to give more details.

    It follows former UKIP Cllr Peter Short’s decision to leave the group last month, to continue on the council as an Independent.

    The Brexit Party will now be the second largest party on the council.

    The make-up of the council is now as follows: 48 Labour councillors, 12 Brexit Party, two independents and one Liberal Democrat.

    Armed robbers carrying hammers and axes rammed an Aston Martin with another vehicle before smashing the car windows and demanding money from its occupant.

    The Aston Martin was parked outside the Lord Clyde Inn, in Thornton Road, Bradford, when it was struck by a a silver 4x4 vehicle.

    Two or three people wearing balaclavas then jumped out and smashed the car's windows and demanded money.

    West Yorkshire Police said a large quantity of cash was handed over before the suspects drove off towards Girlington in a blue vehicle, believed to be similar to a Ford Ka.

    The incident happened at about 07:30 on 7 July.

    Det Insp, Mark Taylor, said: “The victims were carrying a large amount of cash for legitimate business purposes.

    “Although no one was injured this was very frightening for them."

    The force has appealed for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

    A building at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield is one of six buildings up for the 2019 Riba Stirling prize.

    The £3.6m Weston visitor centre houses a new gallery, a restaurant and shop.

    The jury said the building had "significantly improved its immediate environment" and was "truly of its landscape".

    Others in line to be named the UK's best new building include a rural opera house, a whisky distillery in Scotland and an experimental house made of cork.

    Riba, the Royal Institute of British Architects, will announce the winner of its highest accolade in October.

    Bloomberg's European headquarters - the largest stone building in the City of London - won last year's prize.

    The father of a teenager stabbed to death at a Halloween party has said he was left "angry" after being handed "a life sentence" by his son's killer.

    Michael Thompson, 17, was jailed for life for murdering Jamie Brown in Ovenden, Halifax, on 27 October 2018.

    Jamie's father, Robert Brown, said Thompson would have "a life to live" after serving a minimum of 17 years.

    Mr Brown said: "I've got to live a life sentence because I'm not going to see my son ever again.

    "I'm never going to see a grandchild from Jamie, never going to see him get his first wage, have his first real steady relationship and he's took that away from me."

    Mr Brown called for tougher laws against knife crime and in particular, an increase in stop and search policing.

    The Home Office said it was introducing a new legal duty on public bodies such as NHS trusts, local councils and police forces to prevent and tackle serious violence.

    The mayor of the Sheffield City Region has proposed a train station serving Doncaster Sheffield Airport as part of new rail plans for the area.

    Dan Jarvis said proposals include the East Coast Main Line airport link and an extension to the tram network.

    Other plans feature a new station in the Dearne Valley, on the Northern Powerhouse Rail network.

    Mr Jarvis said the offer would "revolutionise rail travel for our communities" and "work for everyone".

    He said the Integrated Rail Plan, external aimed to better connect high-speed and conventional rail networks and solve problems with the current transport system, which was "not fit for the 21st Century".

    A tourism body's board should resign after "damning and breathtaking" reports were published into the running of the company, a peer said.

    The two Welcome to Yorkshire (WtY) reports say expenses claims were made without receipts and staff felt unable to speak out about bad behaviour.

    Lord Paul Scriven said "fundamental change" was needed to regain its reputation.

    A WtY spokesman said: "Where we have let people down, we are truly sorry."

    The company, which receives over £1m in public funding a year, set up the independent investigations after its former boss Sir Gary Verity (pictured) resigned in March.

    Huddersfield Town have been contacted by the Football Association about the large sponsors' logo the Championship side have said will feature on their kit for the 2019-20 season.

    The Terriers revealed the shirt yesterday in a friendly with Rochdale, but it appears to breach FA guidelines on shirt sponsorship, raising the possibility of it being banned.

    The FA has asked Huddersfield for their observations about the kit.

    "The FA has clear kit and advertising regulations for all club matchday kits," the FA said in a statement.

    "If we believe that any club has breached these rules we will look into the matter and, if required, will take the appropriate action."

    Huddersfield have said it will be their home kit for the upcoming season and confirmed it will go on sale on Saturday.

    The club's shirt sponsor Paddy Power has not responded to questions on whether the kit is a spoof or may breach regulations, and referred instead to its own statement.

    A new law to crack down on assaults on emergency service staff is not proving enough of a deterrent, according to the Yorkshire MP who campaigned for the legislation.

    The law, brought in last year, meant offenders faced longer jail terms.

    Figures obtained by the BBC showed police across England and Wales have made more than 6,500 arrests for attacks on emergency service workers.

    Halifax MP Holly Lynch said government "needed to get really tough on this" as the numbers were "still too high".

    A big part of the so-called "Protect the Protectors" law was an increase in sentences available to magistrates and judges from six months to 12 months.

    Ms Lynch said: "It didn't go quite as far as we would like in terms of being a deterrent."

    A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "Attacking emergency staff will not be tolerated and the law was brought in so those who commit such violence face a stronger punishment, doubling the sentence from six months to 12."

    Scarborough’s new big wheel ride will arrive next week ahead of its grand opening at the end of this month.

    The first sections of the wheel will enter the town on Wednesday 24 July at the former Futurist site and then be assembled over the course of five days.

    The structure will arrive on four articulated vehicles with seven technical engineers working on the project, which will open to the public on July 30.

    Once erected, the wheel will carry a maximum of 144 passengers with six people seated in each of its 24 enclosed gondolas.

    The wheel will operate until Monday August 26 although Scarborough Council has an option to extend the lease until November 10, subject to planning permission.
