    Sheffield Wednesday say they are taking legal advice following the resignation of former boss Steve Bruce and his subsequent appointment at Newcastle United.

    The Owls said that they learnt of Bruce's new role as the Magpies' head coach via a public statement.

    Bruce, 58, and his assistants Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, resigned from Sheffield Wednesday Monday.

    In a statement the club said: "The Club is disappointed to learn via public statement issued by Newcastle United that it has appointed former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce, Steve Agnew and Steve Clemence.

    "Regardless of the fact that the staff resigned from their positions with the Club on Monday, there remains outstanding legal issues to be resolved between the club and the staff and Newcastle United.

    "The Club is currently considering its position and taking the appropriate legal advice."

    A £37m theme park being built on a former opencast colliery in South Yorkshire will be a "massive" economic boost to the community, its owners claim.

    Theme and holiday park chain Gullivers is currently redeveloping 250 acres at Pithouse West near Rother Valley Park.

    Julie Dalton, managing director for the family firm, said the park, named Gullivers Valley, is due to open next summer.

    She said it will provide around 370 jobs, with efforts made to recruit as many local people as possible.

  3. Murder probe launched as injured Hull man dies in hospitalpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 17 July 2019

    A murder investigation has been launched after a man died in hospital more than a week after he was seriously injured in an attack in Hull.

    The 41-year-old man suffered head injuries after being assaulted on Buckingham Street at about 22:30 on 6 July.

    Humberside Police said the man, from Hull, died on Monday afternoon.

    Jason Shreeve, 41, of Barnsley Street, Hull, and Luke Hainsworth, 29, of Edler Avenue, Hull, appeared at Hull Magistrates' Court last week charged with attempted murder and were remanded into custody.

    A woman who was initially charged in connection with the incident has been released with no further action.

    The force has appealed for any members of the public with information about the incident to come forward.

    An East Yorkshire beach is back open today after bomb disposal experts well called on Tuesday to deal with a "suspicious object".

    The corner of South Promenade and Sands Lane, in Hornsea, was cordoned off yesterday after a member of the public found the suspected ordnance and put it on top of a bin.

    Army explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialists attended the scene and removed the item for safe disposal.

    A spokesman for the Coastguard said the area is close to a former RAF bombing range and it was possible the item had been washed ashore by the sea.

    His family hosted the party, which took place outside their shop in the city, with hundreds of people welcoming him back.

    A three-year-old boy has been taken to hospital with two broken legs after being hit by a car yesterday evening.

    The boy was hit by a light blue coloured car after it is thought he stepped out into the road while walking with his mother in Stradbrooke Drive, Sheffield, at about 18:30.

    South Yorkshire Police said the driver of the car stopped and spoke with the boy's mum but officers are keen to trace the motorist and any one who may have witnessed the collision..

    The force said it is not believed the driver was driving inappropriately or dangerously.

    The Driffield Show has cancelled its pig section after a case of swine dysentery was confirmed nearby.

    This big marquee will now remain empty with organisers saying the "difficult" decision "has not been taken lightly".

    In a statement on the Driffield Show website organisers said the decision was made consultation with vets after an outbreak of the bacterial disease in a neighbouring area.

    There are also special measures in place after a local case of Equine Flu and documentation confirming vaccinations must be provided before horses are unloaded at the show.

    Last week, pig classes at the Great Yorkshire Show were also cancelled as a "precaution" after one of the animals fell ill at a recent show, although tests later came back negative.

    Huddersfield Town's new home kit has prompted an angry reaction from fans within minutes of it being revealed.

    The club said the kit was a "modern spin" on the traditional blue and white striped home shirt.

    However, fans on Twitter have reacted by asking when "the real kit" will be unveiled.

    One supporter said "You’d think it was difficult to make a mess of blue and white stripes" while another likened it to a beauty pageant sash.

    Within 20 minutes, more than 800 people had commented on the post.

    A tearoom that has become a Yorkshire institution is celebrating its 100th birthday.

    Bettys opened its doors in Cambridge Crescent, Harrogate, in the aftermath of the World War One and has been serving tea and cakes ever since.

    A century on, the firm now boasts six cafes around the county.

    Branch manager Carol Hanson said: "Bettys means a lot to our customers. They've celebrated all their life events with us."

    Problems with the culture, governance and management at tourism body Welcome To Yorkshire have been highlighted in a report obtained by BBC Yorkshire.

    It comes after its former boss Sir Gary Verity resigned in March on health grounds, but later faced complaints about his behaviour and expenses.

    In the aftermath of his departure, the tourism body commissioned two reports.

    One report seen by the BBC found staff felt unable to raise concerns about behaviour, including that of Sir Gary.

    The tourism body is yet to respond to a request for a comment from the BBC.

    Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton has been charged with actual bodily harm after an incident in the tunnel at Barnsley in April.

    Police investigated the incident which they say left a man with facial injuries after Barnsley beat Fleetwood 4-2 in a League One game at Oakwell on 13 April.

    Barton, 36, from Widnes, has been bailed to appear before Barnsley Magistrates Court on 9 October.

    In April, Barton "emphatically" denied allegations he assaulted Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel.

    Secondary education is to be scrapped at a school where a teenage Syrian refugee was filmed being attacked by another pupil.

    Kirklees Council approved the plans for Almondbury Community School in Huddersfield, which will affect about 300 children.

    The move follows it being put in special measures and comes nine months after the Syrian boy was attacked.

    A petition against the proposals was signed by more than 1,250 people.

    Council bosses said "very low pupil numbers" and a recent poor Ofsted inspection had prompted the change, which would start in September 2020 and impact pupils aged between 11 and 16.

    Under the plans, external, the primary element will continue but secondary students will transfer to other nearby schools including King James School and Newsome High School.

    A man has been arrested in connection with a video posted online of police car being damaged in Hull.

    An 18-year-old man was arrested after mobile phone footage was shared online on Monday, showing a man jumping on an unattended police car in Yatesby Garth, Bransholme.

    Humberside Police say a suspect was identified after intelligence was gathered and information was passed on by the public.

    The man has been arrested, initially on suspicion of a burglary, and remains in custody while inquiries continue.
