Hull hospital struggles to help girl's mental health needspublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 26 July 2019
A 13-year-old girl with severe mental health issues is being looked after on a general children’s ward in Hull due to a lack of places in specialist psychiatric units, it's emerged.
The girl’s mother claimed a security guard has been stationed on the ward at Hull Royal Infirmary to prevent her daughter from running away.
She said the nurses on the ward were “kind and caring”, but staff had admitted they were frustrated at not having “the specific training or understanding to meet our daughter’s needs”.
“They’ve admitted they are not able to manage our daughter’s intense episodes of distress," she added.
In a statement, NHS North East and Yorkshire said: "We continue to deliver on our commitments to expand mental health services for children and young people, with record investment.
"An additional 13 mental health beds are due to open in the Humber area later this year in a new facility."
