Six men were found guilty yesterday of a string of offences, as part of Operation Stovewood, external, the investigation into child sex abuse in the town between 1997 and 2013.

The offences related to the abuse of seven girls, who were all under the age of 16, between 1998 and 2002 in Rotherham and the surrounding areas. The men will be sentenced tomorrow.

NCA officer, Robert Burgess, said: "Operation Stovewood is the largest investigation of its kind in the UK, so we anticipate a number of further trials as we work through a considerable amount of information."

The RSPB’s Birdcrime 2018 report says "bird of prey persecution is still rife, with considerably more crimes in North Yorkshire than anywhere else in the UK".

Fifteen incidents were recorded by the wildlife charity in 2018, with hen harriers, buzzards and owls targeted.

The charity say Nidderdale is a "notorious blackspot". In October last year a red kite found shot and poisoned in the area was found to contain two pieces of shot.

Further examination revealed it had survived those injuries only to be later deliberately poisoned by a cocktail of toxic pesticides, two of which are banned.

Mark Thomas, Head of RSPB Investigations, said: “Raptor persecution is a stain on our countryside and once again North Yorkshire emerges as the country with the highest number of raptor crimes to its name."

  16. Gambling addict inquest will not examine state regulationpublished at 08:01 British Summer Time 29 August 2019

An inquest into the death of a gambling addict from South Yorkshire will not examine state regulation of betting, a coroner ruled.

    Jack RitchieImage source, Family Photo

Jack Ritchie, 24, (pictured) from Sheffield, took his own life on 22 November 2017.

His family had argued a failure by the UK authorities to treat gambling problems contributed to his death.

Coroner Chris Dorries said government regulations were "effectively a political matter" but agreed to consider the state's provision of medical services.

During a pre-inquest review in Sheffield on Wednesday, Mr Dorries said the question of the "protection" offered by gambling regulation was beyond the scope of the inquest.

Whether Mr Ritchie "received little or no effective support from state services to prevent his gambling addiction" will be a matter for the full inquest, the coroner said.
