    A man has appeared in court after £10,000 worth of damage was caused to a building in Hull.

    Gary Cawthorn, 34, of no fixed abode, is charged with causing criminal damage in relation to an incident which saw him sat on a roof for more than six hours last week.

    He is also charged on suspicion of robbery earlier that day.

    He is due to appear at Hull Crown Court in September.

    Police officers in Rotherham say they are becoming "increasingly concerned" for the welfare of a man who hasn't been seen since the weekend.

    Damien Taylor, 38, was last seen at The County pub on Bridgegate at about 18:00 on Saturday.

    His lack of contact is "out of character", police say.

    Mr Taylor is 6ft 2ins tall and slim and i he's thought to be wearing a purple striped Arsenal football shirt, blue jeans, a green coat and blue Adidas trainers.

    Anybody who knows where he could be is being asked to get in touch with police.

    A 90-year-old pedestrian has been taken to hospital with head injuries after being in collision with a cyclist in York, say police.

    The road remains closed following the incident, which happened near the Heworth Inn.

    The injured pedestrian has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary, police say.

    It looks to have been a busy and varied bank holiday weekend for fire crews in West Yorkshire.

    About 40 firefighters were needed to tackle a blaze at a factory in Denholme on Sunday.

    No-one was hurt in the fire at Omega Proteins, but the fire service said about three-quarters of the processing plant in Half Acre Road, had been on fire.

    Earlier, four crews dealt with 20 bales of hay on fire on Eccup Moor Road near Harewood in Leeds on Saturday and extinguishing a straw bailer which was on fire in Wakefield:

    And the service says crews did a "quacking job" in a real life wild goose chase.

  7. Thousands of children fed by Hull charity's effortspublished at 11:39 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    A food charity says by the end of the summer holidays about 12,000 meals will have been given out to children across Hull.

    Fareshare Hull and Humber has also increased the number of kids' clubs to which it provides food, from eight in 2018 to 40 this year.

    The charity says it's working at its maximum, giving food to more than 100 organisations in total including hospices and schools.

    A total of six Labour councillors have resigned from senior positions in Sheffield over the bank holiday weekend in a row over how the authority is run.

    A petition has called for a switch to a committee system of decision-making which could prompt a city-wide vote.

    Councillors Moya O’Rourke and Adam Hurst have both resigned as cabinet assistants.

    They are the latest to quit after the 26,000-name It’s Our City petition was handed into the Town Hall on Friday.

    Hours after the petition, Councillor Olivia Blake quit as Deputy Leader.

    On Sunday, her husband Councillor Lewis Dagnall resigned as cabinet member for environment, streetscene and climate change.

    He was joined by councillors Sophie Wilson and Fran Johnson, who both quit their cabinet advisor roles.

    Councillor O’Rourke, who was the youngest ever member of Sheffield Council when she was elected in 2016, said in a Facebook post: “It’s clear many people in Sheffield want to see more democracy in this city.

    "So, like Olivia, Fran, Lewis and Sophie, I signed the It’s Our City petition.

    "It’s time to be brave and follow my colleagues in taking a stand for democracy."

    The resignations have sparked speculation there could be a vote of no confidence in leader Julie Dore.

    The organisation staging the cycling World Championships next month says it plans to stick to the route which takes the race through Yorkshire Dales communities hit by flash flooding last month.

    Yorkshire 2019 says the race will go through Grinton Moor, where a bridge collapsed after torrential rain, if work on a temporary crossing at Cogden South is completed in time for the event.

    The bridge was the scene of some of the most famous images from the Tour de France’s Grand Depart in 2014.

    Divers for the county council have been testing the foundations of several bridges in areas affected by the flash flooding.

    Meanwhile, a flood relief fund set up after last month's downpours has raised almost £150,000.

    A murder investigation is continuing after a 21-year-old man was found injured on a road in Leeds where the West Indian Carnival was due to take place.

    West Yorkshire Police were called to Chapeltown Road at 22:00 on Sunday, where a man was found seriously injured near the Button Hill junction.

    He was given emergency treatment, but was pronounced dead at Leeds General Infirmary.

    An 18-year-old man, found seriously injured nearby, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

    Supt Nick Smart, in charge of policing for the carnival, said anyone with information about the assault or circumstances leading up to it should contact the police.

    The BBC's seen documents which suggest the government knew the HS2 High Speed rail project was over budget and behind schedule as far back as 2016.

    The line, funded by the taxpayer, is due to eventually run from London to Yorkshire and Manchester.

    Until a review was announced earlier this month ministers insisted the scheme was on track.

    The Department for Transport says like all complex programmes, delivery plans have evolved over time.

    Meanwhile a group set up to promote the interests of the north says it will conduct its own review of the threatened rail scheme.

    The Northern Powerhouse Partnership has chosen a panel of experts from the worlds of business, local government and politics who are all based in the north.

    An 18-year-old woman has died following a suspected drug overdose in a West Yorkshire nightclub.

    She collapsed at The Warehouse nightclub in Leeds in the early hours of Monday, West Yorkshire Police said.

    Officers were called at 03:18 and she was pronounced dead a short time later.

    A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of supplying class A drugs.

    A motorbike rider has been assaulted after being involved in a collision in Sheffield, say police.

    The 28-year-old man was travelling along Ecclesall Road, towards the city centre on Sunday evening at about 20:40, when he collided with a pedestrian.

    Police say both the rider of the bike and the pedestrian, a 22-year-old man, suffered serious injuries.

    After the crash, which happened near the Nursery Tavern, the rider of the bike was assaulted by a third person, also at the scene.

    Officers say a 24-year-old Sheffield man has been arrested and remains in custody.

    Anyone who saw the incident is being asked to contact police.

    A 73-year-old man has gone missing from Hull, police say.

    Officers say they are "extremely concerned" for the welfare of a missing Michael Margerison.

    He was was last seen at midnight in the Spring Bank West area.

    Mr Margerison is described as about 5ft 5in tall and of stocky build.

    Anyone who sees him is being urged to contact Humberside Police.

    Volunteers will be scouring the Leeds Festival site today scooping up discarded tents, sleeping bags, mats, wellingtons and camping utensils.

    Over the last 10 years Everything Is Possible says it's passed on thousands of tents, sleeping bags and other equipment to community groups

    The charity was set up in 1999 to support excluded young people, such as the homeless and those with drug or alcohol problems. It says often the equipment has only been used for one weekend.

    Tens of thousands of people attended the three-day event at Bramham Park.
