  1. Witness appeal after 'sex assault' on board trainpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    Police officers are appealing for help after a woman was sexually attacked while on board a train in South Yorkshire.

    The victim, who was with two children, was on a busy train from Meadowhall to Doncaster at about 17:30 on Sunday 18 August.

    She is said to have been touched inappropriately by a man, police say.

    British Transport Police officers met the train and arrested a 37-year-old man, who was from Dunswell in East Yorkshire.

    He has since been released under investigation.

    Anybody who can help police over the incident are being asked to get in touch.

  3. Stolen York Minster organ pipe returned after 50 yearspublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    An organ pipe taken from York Minster 50 years ago by a German tourist is to be returned.

    In 1969, Klaus Weber (pictured), now 72, and five other men, visited the cathedral at a time when the organ was being refurbished.

    According to Klaus, a fellow member of the group, Georg, took a fancy to one of the pipes which were lined up against the wall.

    He told the Church Times, external: “Georg took one small pipe. We couldn’t stop him. He never said why.”

    Klaus says when the group headed home, Georg was worried the pipe would be seized by customs and wanted to throw it away.

    Mr Weber says he couldn't see a "historical piece" discarded and so offered to take the pipe back to Germany with him for safe-keeping.

    He's kept the pipe ever since and says he now feels the wrong needs righting.

    He's written to staff at York Minster offering the 16in-long pipe, plus £50 - £1 for every year it was missing.

    A spokesperson for the cathedral said: “The pipe probably dates from the early 19th Century, when the organ was rebuilt after a fire in 1829. It wasn’t missed, unfortunately.

    "It can’t go back in the organ, so will go into the collection with a note explaining its story.”

    Dan Chambers, 32, says he had to "up his game" to compete at a high level in the competition.

    The support worker follows in the home-town footsteps of university researcher Rahul Mandal, who won the 2018 series.

  5. Woman 'seriously injured' in Leeds dog attackpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    A 72-year-old woman has been attacked and seriously injured by a dog in Leeds, police say.

    It happened this morning just after 09:30 in the Engine Fields nature reserve area of Yeadon (pictured).

    The victim was taken by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary where she is described as being in a "stable condition with serious injuries".

    A 50-year-old man also received minor injuries in the incident.

    Officers say a 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous dog offences and is currently in custody. The dog involved has been seized.

    Det Insp James Entwistle said: “We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident.

    “We understand there may have been previous incidents in the area where people have been chased by the same dog, we are particularly keen to hear from anyone who has been involved in those.”

    Members of the GMB union are calling for a 3% pay rise, but the paint company is offering 2.2%.

    Staff have been striking since midnight and there is a picket line outside the factory on Sculcoates Lane.

    Local organiser Sean Clarkson said they were at "deadlock" after a number of meetings with the employer.

    About 60 members are involved in the industrial action, with walkouts planned for the next three Mondays.

    Crown Paints says it is disappointed it's been unable to agree a deal with the GMB union and believes the firm's offer is fair.

    The number of private ambulances used for 999 and non-emergency call-outs has risen in Yorkshire and the East Midlands region, which includes Lincolnshire, in the last year, figures show.

    Data obtained from the 10 ambulance trusts in England via a Freedom of Information request show the East Midlands ambulance trust is fourth in the national spending table, with Yorkshire being sixth.

    Both regions spent more in 2018-19 than they did in 2017-18.

    In total, NHS ambulance trusts in England spent £92,476,915 on private ambulances and taxis in 2018-19, compared to £90,862,230 the year before.

    A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said it was investing more than £36m for trusts to buy 256 new vehicles.

    Council-run children's services in Sheffield are "good" according to the latest inspection by the government.

    It comes after a visit from Ofsted inspectors who concluded that children were being put at the centre of the system.

    The report also said the needs of children in care "are very well met", and those leaving care receive an impressive service that meets their needs to a high standard, it added.

    Areas for improvement include arrangements for children who go missing from home and care, as well as managing allegations against professionals, the report said.

    Staff have been thanked by Sheffield City Council following the rating.

    A group of metal detectorists had to go to hospital after unknowingly eating cakes apparently spiked with cannabis in a village in South Yorkshire.

    Some 13 men and women fell ill at the rally in High Melton, Doncaster, on Saturday night.

    A detectorist spokesman said: "People could have died. It was lucky that no children or people on medication with serious health problems ate the cake."

    A 48-year-old woman from County Durham was arrested and later released on bail.

    Julian Evan-Hart, editor of Treasure Hunting Magazine, said it was a "dreadful incident" but he did not believe it was malevolent.

    "I think it was an irresponsible, poorly thought-through joke," he said.

    "This isn't a poor reflection on our hobby, the dig organisers or anyone else involved the planning of the event. It's just a case of random lunacy."

    Mr Evan-Hart said the cakes were homemade, and had not been sold.

    The 13 people admitted to hospital, who came from across the country, were later discharged.

    Maurice Dunn, 72, was last seen on Sunday at about 10:00 as he left his home in Oak Close.

    He is believed to be wearing a blue t-shirt, grey or blue trousers and a blue coat.

    He has a long white beard.

    Anybody who has seen Mr Dunn, or who knows where he could be, is asked to get in touch with police.

    Two towns in North Yorkshire are to get a share of £1bn of government money to help revitalise high streets.

    Northallerton and Scarborough are among 50 places in the country getting a share of the money aimed at improving transport links or converting empty shops into new homes or offices.

    Councillor Steve Siddons, leader of Scarborough Borough Council, said: “At this stage, we've won a grant of up to £150,000 to prepare a plan for a scheme to re-energise more of the town centre.

    “As we are in competition with 99 other towns, everyone in Scarborough is going to have to pull together to get the best bid possible to generate change in this borough.”

    Volunteer rescuers have thanked local residents for their help after a South Yorkshire mountain biker was injured in a crash.

    Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team was called out to help on Sunday afternoon after a bike rider crashed into a tree, needing urgent help.

    The volunteers thanked people who lived nearby for letting them use their garden to get to the casualty and for then giving them a cold drink.

    The mountain biker, who fell in woods in the Wath upon Dearne area, was taken to hospital.

    Just days before the new term starts a West Yorkshire private school has announced it's closing.

    Rastrick Independent School near Brighouse has about 70 pupils.

    Its headteacher says it will officially close on Friday.

    A message on the school website reads: "I am sorry to announce I am closing Rastrick Independent School with effect from 30 August 2019. I have informed the local authority."

    The news comes in the school's 25th anniversary year.

    A Sheffield student has won a £50,000 investment after appearing on the BBC TV show Dragon's Den.

    Will Chew started his company Mak Tok after failing to find any chilli sauce in Sheffield that tasted like the paste his mum made back in Malaysia.

    He set to work making it himself and it was so popular he was able to start selling it.

    Crafting entrepreneur and TV Dragon Sara Davies saw the potential in his product and put her money where her mouth is in an episode which aired on Sunday.
