Today's events are the latest in a series of strikes started a year ago by 16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg.

The protests have now spread across 150 countries, with today's action billed as the largest so far.

    Harry Carling

In Sheffield, the University of Sheffield's Students’ Union closed for an hour in support of the strike.

Students' Union development officer Harry Carling, 22, said he believes Britain must lead the way in taking action.

"When the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report came out last September it really took me aback in terms of how little time we have left to change our society", he said.

“I really think that Britain can become a beacon for that change."

    Jenny Patient

PhD student Jenny Patient, 57, said she was "excited" to see so many people taking part, saying she said she had been prompted to take action when she realised the "injustice" of climate change.

"My carbon footprint is massive compared to that of somebody in India or South America [yet] it is those people now who are experiencing the most horrendous droughts, flood, storms, that's what made me think we need to do something about this," she said.

    Les Dike

Physiotherapist and yoga instructor Lesley Dike, 65, was among hundreds of protesters gathered outside Sheffield's City Hall.

She said: "The fact the Amazon is burning as we speak is just terrifying, absolutely terrifying, and we have to do something.

"I'm so inspired by Greta Thunberg, the fact that a young woman has decided to take a stand has been such an inspiration to all of us."
