    Airport bosses say Flybe's decision to cancel all flights out of Doncaster Sheffield Airport come despite rising numbers of passengers on the routes.

    Flybe announced earlier that it was stopping flights to Belfast City and Amsterdam from Doncaster Sheffield Airport as they didn't attract enough customers in the winter season.

    A spokesperson for the South Yorkshire airport said: “From a DSA perspective, the Amsterdam and Belfast routes have proved popular with a 25% increase in passenger numbers over the summer versus last year, with near full aircraft.”

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport is expecting a record year, despite the withdrawal of the two routes, it added.

    A convicted killer who was part of a gang of men who groomed and abused young girls in Rotherham has been jailed for 18 years.

    Mohammed Ahsan, 35, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court after he admitted three counts of indecent assault against girls under the age of 16 between 1999 and 2001.

    His jail sentence makes him the 20th person to be convicted as part of Operation Stovewood, the National Crime Agency's investigation into sexual abuse and exploitation in Rotherham covering the years 1997 to 2013.

    Ahsan is currently serving a life sentence, with a minimum term of 19 years, for murdering a woman in a Rotherham nightclub in 2005.

    A Sheffield school has introduced stand-up comedy classes in a move it believes can teach girls vital skills such as how to fight their corner in the workplace

    Private school Sheffield High School for Girls has introduced the classes for sixth-formers.

    Head teacher Nina Gunson said that while the school offers public speaking activities, such as debating, it wanted to find alternatives to appeal to other students.

    She said: "As a leader myself, I have difficult conversations on a daily basis and I think being able to have confidence in what you're saying, to being able to present your point clearly, not to be too fazed by what someone might say, not take things personally and things like that are really, really valuable skills for your own mental wellbeing and your own resilience."

    Those taking part in the eight-week course will perform their own stand-up or comedy sketches.

    A motorist has died following a crash involving a car and a van on a North Yorkshire road yesterday.

    The crash happened on the A6055 near Leeming Bar Services at about 17:45 yesterday between a black BMW and a white Ford Transit.

    The driver of the BMW was taken to hospital by air ambulance but died a few hours later, North Yorkshire Police say.

    The driver of the Transit was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

    A number of passengers from either vehicle were also injured, but none of their injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

    The man responsible for organising cycling's UCI Road World Championships which begin this weekend says everything possible has been done to minimise disruption.

    More than one million people are due to watch 1,400 riders compete in the nine-day event across Yorkshire.

    All of the races, taking place between 22 and 29 September, finish in Harrogate, where there will be dozens of road closures, external.

    However, Andy Hindley from Yorkshire 2019 says: "There will be some disruption but we've kept it to the absolute minimum we feel we can deal with from a safety perspective."

    Regional airline Flybe has announced it's stopping all flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA).

    In April, the company announced it was scaling operations back and would stop flying jets from DSA, flying turboprop planes (above) instead.

    It has now said it will be stopping all flights after planned winter routes to Amsterdam and Belfast didn't attract enough customers.

    In a statement to the BBC, the airline said: "Flybe will be withdrawing all services from Doncaster Sheffield Airport with the last flight operating on Saturday 26th October, 2019."

    Flybe said any customers who had booked a flight from DSA after the cut-off would be contacted and offered an alternative flight or a full refund.

    A senior policeman has praised his officers after they were attacked and their police van was "torched" in Leeds.

    The police crime scene investigation van was set on fire in Halton Moor yesterday evening.

    Writing on Twitter head of forensics, Peter Arnold, said: "My staff don’t come to work expecting their van to be torched whilst examining a crime scene and keeping the public safe.

    "Our Crime Scene Investigator is fine and was more concerned about being unable to service more victims for the rest of the shift - that's commitment and dedication for you."

    A £2m repairs fund has been set up by the government to support farmers who were affected by severe flooding earlier this year.

    The Farming Recovery Fund will pay out grants of between £500 and £25,000 to cover the costs of repairing damage.

    Wainfleet in Lincolnshire (above) and parts of North Yorkshire, including Grinton (below), were hit by flooding in the summer following heavy rainfall.

    Stuart Roberts, from the National Farmers Union, said farmers "desperately needed" support.

    "The reinstatement of the Farming Recovery Fund will be a relief to those farmers affected by the recent flooding events in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire who're now coping with a massive clear-up operation," he said.

    An 800-year-old figure of Christ that once adorned St Mary's Abbey in York will be returned to the city after nearly two centuries.

    The rare object, made in Limoges, France, in the 13th Century, was found in 1826 in the ruins of the abbey.

    It disappeared for 100 years before it became part of a private German art collection in the 1920s.

    It was bought by York Museums Trust and will be displayed at the Yorkshire Museum, on the site of the old abbey.

    A police van has been set on fire in Leeds and there are reports police officers came under attack.

    The police crime scene investigation van was set alight in Halton Moor, east Leeds on Thursday evening.

    West Yorkshire Police said officers were "attending a disturbance on Ullswater Crescent following damage to a vehicle".

    No-one was injured but officers remained on the scene for a time to contain the situation, said the force.

    Work to refurbish one of North Yorkshire's best known buildings has begun.

    York's Guildhall, which is behind the city's Mansion House hasn't had any major renovations since it was hit during World War Two bombing raids.

    It's expected to cost about £20m.

    City of York Council says the refurbishment will include a cafe, a riverside restaurant and office space, all of which will help secure the Guildhall's long-term future.
