Yorkshire crowds praised over rain-sodden cycling racepublished at 09:12 British Summer Time 30 September 2019
Crowds in a soaking wet Harrogate have been praised as the UCI Road World Championships concluded at the weekend with a brutal day's racing.
Mads Pedersen, 23, was a surprise winner when the men's 261km elite road race came down to a three-way sprint on Parliament Street.
These World Championships have seen bad weather all week, but the worst was saved until last.
Organisers announced early on Sunday that the route would be cut by 19km to 261km, bypassing the key climbs of Buttertubs and Grinton Moor due to flooding.
Geraint Thomas, who won the 2018 Tour de France, said: "Wet. Cold. It was a tough day out there.
"The atmosphere, the crowd, was really good. This is something we'll remember for sure."
