People in York are being asked for their views over the latest plans for developing the historic Clifford's Tower site.

It is the second scheme proposed by English Heritage for the 13th Century landmark.

The new plans retain the walkways and a roof deck proposed in an earlier scheme which was abandoned last year.

A new visitor centre, which prompted significant objections to the earlier scheme, is not included in the new proposals.

English Heritage initially proposed to build a £2m visitor centre at the base of the mound the tower sits on.

However, objectors claimed it resembled a toilet block, would destroy the view and have a detrimental effect on the appearance of the area.

English Heritage withdrew its plans due to the opposition in 2018.

The new public consultation is set to run until December and will be followed by a planning application. If approved work will begin in 2020, according to the organisation.

The Dock Office Chambers will also be refurbished and a new maritime route which will guide visitors through the heart of the city to the River Hull will be created.

The National Lottery Heritage fund is to award £13.6m towards the £27.4m needed to get the project afloat, it's been confirmed today.

Councillor Daren Hale says: “This is a real game-changer for Hull. This is continued investment and regeneration for our city and our proud heritage."

The scheme will "bring far-reaching benefits for everyone as well as reaffirming our role as a thriving cultural and maritime city", he added.

Over 40 schools in West Yorkshire haven't been inspected by education watchdog Ofsted for over 10 years, according to figures compiled by the BBC.

    A child writing

Schools labelled as "outstanding" have been exempt from routine inspections since 2011, but Ofsted is concerned the ratings no longer reflect the school's standards.

Inspecting all schools would ensure they were not "failing or at risk of decline", the National Association of Head Teachers has said.

In York, almost a fifth of children go to schools which have not been inspected for more than a decade.

City of York Council said 90% of children were at schools rated, external as "good" or "outstanding".

The Department for Education has said it now plans to lift the exemption.

The prestigious eight-day cycling event in late September attracted thousands of people from across Europe.

However, others in the town and surrounding villages said business had been boosted by the influx of visitors.

A feedback meeting run by Harrogate Business Improvement District is due to be held later.
