There were 15 homeless deaths in Sheffield last year, trebling the number the year before.

Meanwhile, York saw five homeless people die last year, which is one down from 2017 figures.

There was also a decrease in Hull - nine homeless people died in 2018 compared with 12 the year before.

Spearmint Rhino, in Brown Street, had its sexual entertainment licence renewed last month despite widespread opposition to the club.

The renewal came despite a council report finding 74 licence condition breaches and 145 of the club's code of conduct rules had been broken, including evidence that dancers were "sexually touching customers".

In its determination notice, Sheffield City Council's licensing committee said it was "satisfied" the club had taken the necessary steps to address the issues.

However, as a condition of the renewing licence it said a random sample of CCTV must be inspected by officers at least once a month.

  12. Festival leaves Sheffield park 'obliterated'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

A Sheffield park has been left "absolutely obliterated" by a festival which was held during bad weather last weekend, according to a local resident.

The Fire in the Park and Bass in the Park events were to be held at The Ponderosa in Crookesmoor at the weekend, but wet weather meant it was cut short.

Fire in the Park went ahead on Saturday, but thunderstorms and rain led organisers to cancel Sunday's Bass in the Park event.

Local resident John Conway says in the aftermath of the event, the park now looks like it has been "ploughed for crops".

"The festival has absolutely obliterated Ponderosa. Tree branches are pulled down, birds' nests scattered below trees, tree branches torn down by fencing," said Mr Conway.

The council says it has staff working at the site to try and "reinstate the area" following the rain.

The festival's organisers have been contacted for comment.

Unite the union, which represents about 50 library and museum employees in the city, say Bradford Council is planning to cut funding for the services by 65%.

Unite said the first strike days would take place on 21 and 22 October, with further walkouts planned for November and December.

The council has said it is "disappointed" union members had voted for strike action.

It said it would take steps to help ensure that library services are still provided to residents during the strike and urged union members to "work with it" on finding solutions to achieve the savings it needed to make.

Members of Unison have been balloted after the authority made the policy changes.

A total of 77% of those who voted supported strike action, though legally further ballots will have to take place before any strike action happens.

Unison claims the changes, which include introducing attendance targets for staff on long-term sick and scrapping review meetings for long-term absentees, would make it easier to sack workers.

In a report which is due to go before a meeting of senior councillors next week, the council said the changes aim to make life better for the authority's employees.

It said the new policy, which was implemented in May, had already cut the average number of days lost to long-term absence and would make the council a more “caring” and attractive employer.
