    A sculpture which doubles as a bin for collecting plastic has been put up outside The Deep in Hull.

    Fin the Fish is designed to tackle plastic pollution on our beaches by providing space for people to drop off their plastic waste.

    The 7ft-long artwork is the idea of the University of Hull and Yorkshire Water.

    After a summer on Scarborough beach, Fin collected more than 6,000 bottles which were then recycled.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian was killed in a collision with a car on the M1 in South Yorkshire.

    The 25-year-old man was hit by a black Mercedes CLA in the third lane of the M1.

    The collision happened at about 23:50 on Friday on the northbound carriageway between junctions 35A at Stocksbridge and 36 at Tankersley

    South Yorkshire Police says it wants to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or was in the area at the time.

    Two men have been charged in connection with disturbances inside and outside Elland Road following Leeds United's game with Birmingham City.

    A number of people were arrested when violence flared at the end of the game with police officers and stewards being injured.

    Bottles and cones were thrown at officers, West Yorkshire Police added.

    A 44-year-old Leeds man has been charged with assaulting an emergency worker and a public order offence, and a 25-year-old Leeds man has been charged with criminal damage to a police vehicle.

    Both are due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court next month.

    Meanwhile, two men, aged 19 and 22, and a 17-year-old youth, all from Birmingham, were given a community resolution for being drunk and disorderly, as was a 56-year-old man, from Lincolnshire, who was arrested with them.

    A 24-year-old man, from Leeds, and 20-year-old man, from Birmingham, were arrested on suspicion of assault and released under investigation, police say.

    An investigation into the trouble is ongoing with CCTV being trawled.

    Supt Chris Bowen said: “These were isolated incidents involving only a relative minority of the supporters of both sides and it is fair to say this is the worst trouble we have seen at Elland Road for over a decade."

    A former South Yorkshire Police van has been donated to volunteers of a mountain rescue team.

    Woodhead Mountain Rescue work alongside emergency services during searches for missing people and in extreme weather conditions in more rural parts of South Yorkshire.

    As part of their continued relationship, the force agreed to hand over the keys to a former police van (above right) which will be used by the volunteer team.

    The VW Transporter was at the end of its working life for the police.

    A man has been injured after a being stabbed during an incident at Catterick Garrison army barracks.

    North Yorkshire Police said that a man, in his 20s, had been wounded but that his injuries are "not believed to be life-threatening".

    The Ministry of Defence confirmed an "incident" had taken place at the barracks.

    Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a three-storey office building in Leeds city centre.

    West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said seven fire engines have been sent to the Capita building in Clay Pit Lane after the fire broke out earlier today.

    There have been no reports of any injuries and the fire is currently under control, according to the fire service.

    Crews from Leeds, Hunslet, Killingbeck, Wakefield, Otley, Skelmanthorpe and Cookridge are in attendance.

    Clay Pit Lane is currently closed in both directions at Providence Place.

    A new gaming app has been launched which challenges stereotypes of Muslims, according to the developers.

    Virtue Reality sees Muslim aid workers helping in poor areas across the world, working for charity Islamic Relief.

    Players help build schools and shelters, with their characters earning rewards to be spent helping with humanitarian projects.

    Damage to Marsden Moor caused by fires that swept across the area six months ago will take "decades to restore", according to the National Trust.

    Large swathes of moorland were destroyed in April in a series of fire believed to have been started because of a discarded barbecue.

    The Trust says the most significant fire, on 21 April destroyed 700 hectares (2.7 sq miles) of land and burnt for four days. It estimates £500,000 will be needed to repair the damage.

    The fires destroyed important peat soils and the habitats of mountain hares and rare ground nesting birds, including curlew and twite.

    Since the fire, National Trust members and the local community have donated more than £100,000 for the Marsden Moor Appeal.

    Lead Ranger, Tom Harman said; “The damage is a massive blow to this country’s nature conservation and to the wider climate change issues we face across the world."

    Natural Flood Management Project Manager Rosie Holdsworth said “The damage caused by the fires will take decades to restore, especially the peat soils."

    A lorry driver has been injured when his vehicle overturned on a Leeds road this morning.

    Police confirmed one person has been injured when the truck, carrying aggregate, overturned on Pontefract Road, Leeds.

    It happened at about 10:20 this morning on the roundabout with the M1 junction.

    The fire service helped release the driver from the vehicle.

    There are slight delays with the A63 being partially blocked by the overturned lorry.

    Two more people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the fatal stabbing of a man in Scarborough yesterday.

    A 26-year-old man was found with serious injuries near Scarborough Town Hall and the Royal Hotel on St Nicholas Street at 02:00. He was taken to hospital but later died.

    North Yorkshire Police said a 20-year-old man was arrested last night in the town and a 28-year-old man was arrested this morning.

    It follows the arrests of five men, aged between 18 and 21, and a 16-year-old boy shortly after the incident.

    Police say all eight remain in custody and officers remain at the scene today.

    A secret base in Scarborough played a key role in resolving the Cold War's Cuban missile crisis, it can now be revealed.

    Up on a hilltop, not far from a caravan park, sits what is believed to be the longest continually running listening station in the world.

    The GCHQ base at Scarborough was established just before World War One because its position was ideal to intercept German naval radio signals in the North Sea.

    And a newly declassified report, entitled Soviet Merchant Ship Changes Course, shows it provided vital intelligence to the White House during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

    President John F Kennedy was told on 16 October the Soviet Union was secretly shipping nuclear missiles on to the island of Cuba, just 90 miles from America.

    The revealed report shows the operators in the Scarborough bunker were able to intercept the Soviet ships reporting back their position and then use that to establish where they were heading.

    A teenager has died after the car she was travelling in crashed into a house in Barnsley.

    The 18-year-old was a passenger in a red Renault Clio when it hit a property on Burton Road, in Monk Bretton, at about 05:05 on Saturday.

    She was pronounced dead at the scene.

    It's thought the Clio was travelling behind a white Citroen C1 when the crash happened.

    South Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone who saw either of the vehicles before the collision to get in touch.

    Ronaldo Vieira, who left Leeds United to join Sampdoria last year, was the target of monkey chants from Roma fans during yesterday's 0-0 draw in Serie A.

    Vieira, an England Under-21s international, grew up in West Yorkshire after moving to the UK from Portugal at a young age.

    The chants were audible from the visiting supporters, for which Roma later tweeted an apology:

    Four goats have been "randomly" killed overnight at an animal farm in Sheffield.

    The animals were attacked sometime between 18:00 on Friday and 06:00 the following day, Graves Park animal Farm said, external.

    It said the deaths left staff "deeply saddened" and said police are investigating the incident.

    The farm is run by Sheffield City Council and includes pigs, cows and ponies.

    Six men have been arrested following a street fight in Hull where police say they seized a knuckle duster and snooker cue.

    The disturbance happened on Freehold Street at about 13:00 yesterday, say police.

    Humberside Police say the men were arrested on suspicion of offences including affray, assault and disorder. Three of the men involved were taken to hospital.

    Ch Insp Lee Edwards said: “We are in the early stages of the investigation, however we believe all those involved are known to each other.

    "A vehicle has also been seized as part of the investigation as well as various items including a knuckleduster and part of a snooker cue.

    Anyone with information about the incident is being urged to contact police.
