Workington Reds have been handed an away tie to either Leek Town or Chasetown in the FA Trophy if they progress through from their First Round tie against Brighouse, postponed over the weekend.

The game was postponed because the Yorkshire club are under investigation by the FA for allegedly fielding an ineligible player in an earlier round.

If Brighouse are found to have broken FA rules, the Reds could be handed a bye through to round two, made to face Tadcaster, who Brighouse defeated in the Fourth Qualifying Round.

Jake Verity, who leads Sheffield University’s Students’ Union, said reducing prices to £1 would encourage more students to use trams.

Both First and Stagecoach have previously re-introduced £1 fares on buses after lobbying by student groups, but Supertram does not have a concessionary fare to match.

Mr Verity said. “The more students we can get on a tram and get out to see Sheffield the better because it’s got so much to offer."

A Supertram spokesman said: “We are very happy to meet the students’ union to discuss any proposals they have. But such a deeply discounted fare would not be sustainable for tram services in the city.”

The victim is now said to be afraid to leave his own home after dark following the assault in Outwood which saw him suffer extensive bruising and cuts around his eye, police say.

That's the way people should access Huddersfield's Castle Hill - a 4,000-year-old flat-topped Neolithic site - according to the town's MP Barry Sheerman.

The Labour MP says he's been inspired by the Monte Solaro chair lift on the Italian island of Capri, which is 1,932ft above sea level and offers a view of the entire Gulf of Naples.

At 902 ft, Castle Hill is not quite so high up, but the MP says: “It would be perfect. It’s do-able and it’s not expensive.

“It would be a tourist attraction and would solve a lot of the accessibility problems at what's already a jewel in the crown as one of the most beautiful views in the whole of Yorkshire.”

Mr Sheerman said he has raised the matter with colleagues on Kirklees Council and via the commission on the future of Huddersfield, which he chairs.

Money raised via the terminal, which is on Oxford Street, will be used to fund projects to help people off the streets, said the authority.

Donations are made via debit or credit cards being tapped on to the terminal, which has been installed in the window of Marks and Spencer.

The cash is put into a central fund from which organisations supporting the homeless can apply for grants of up to £500.

North Yorkshire's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan said the initiative "could have a life-changing effect" and hoped more terminals would be installed in the region.

The force of the smash, which happened on Alness Drive at about 20:30 on Sunday, pinned the woman between the door and body of her BMW (pictured), North Yorkshire Police said.

The driver of the other car - thought to be silver or grey and possibly the size of a small MPV - failed to stop after the incident. Officers say it was driven off towards Moor Lane.

As a result of the collision, the woman suffered broken ribs, a broken collar bone, a fractured knee cap and broken leg, police say.

Anyone who saw either vehicle prior to the collision is being asked to contact police.

The force says it particularly wants to hear about the offending vehicle, which it says is likely to have damage to its nearside front end.

The new custody suite and police station would be built on College Road, next to where the current police station is, if plans to buy land from Doncaster Council is successful.

The current station "needs updating" and isn't fit for purpose, according to the force.

The new station would be one of the most efficient in the country by the time it's built in 2022, South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings has said.

The number of additional officers who are expected to work in the town following a national recruitment drive is said to be the reason for the planned new police station.

  19. Was one of world's first 'selfies' taken in Leeds?published at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2019

What's been described as one of the first "selfies" - which was taken in the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds over 130 years ago - has gone on show in the city.

The image of renowned astronomer and inventor Washington Teasdale looking at the landmark remains of the abbey was taken in 1883 and is now part of a new exhibition focusing on the city's leading thinkers.

Teasdale, a pioneer in fields such as engineering and naturalism, captured the image using a technique known as cyanotype, which is still used today to create architectural blueprints.

It's said by exhibition organisers to be one of the earliest examples of someone both taking and appearing in a photo...or, in 21st Century speak, what we might call a "selfie".

Chris Sharp, from Leeds Museums and Galleries, says: "Teasdale had a truly remarkable mind and seemed capable of reaching astonishing heights of inventiveness and ingenuity."

Other big names from the city featuring in the Leeds to Innovation exhibition include Betty Beecroft, who took over the running of the famous Kirkstall Forge in 1778, and John Smeaton, who's known as "the father of civil engineering".

The exhibition is now on at Leeds Industrial Museum in Armley.
