1. Ex-BBC Look North presenter loses tax appealpublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2019

    A former BBC Yorkshire presenter has lost an appeal against a £420,000 tax bill.

    Christa Ackroyd, who presented Look North in Yorkshire, was found to be a BBC employee rather than a freelance contractor.

    The ruling means Ms Ackroyd will now have to pay income tax and National Insurance contributions on her earnings while at the BBC between 2001 and 2013.

    She was one of a number of people employed by the BBC via personal service companies.

    Judges sitting in the Upper Tribunal in London ruled in favour of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) who had brought the claim.

    HMRC said it welcomed the judgement, adding: "Employment status is never a matter of choice. It is always dictated by the facts and when the wrong tax is being paid we put things right."

    In a statement, the BBC said: "The BBC was not party to this case but we're reviewing the details of the judgment."

  3. Busy Hull road flooded by burst water pipepublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2019

    A busy road in Hull is closed this morning after 8,000 properties were affected by a burst water main.

    Firefighters worked through the night on Spring Bank West to lower the level of water on the road.

    Homes now have their supply back on and Yorkshire Water says engineers are working to fix the problem as soon as possible.

    Spring Bank West remains closed in both directions and is expected to be shut for some time with diversions in place.

    A set of hand puppets given to West Yorkshire siblings by the creator of a famous children's television show are expected to fetch thousands of pounds at auction.

    Vicky Golding and Max Jowett received a set of Sooty, Sweep and Soo puppets from Harry Corbett, who invented the famous puppeting trio.

    Their father, Derek Jowett, was a friend of the magician and presenter, who they say gave them the gift when learning that their mother was ill with cancer.

    Ms Golding, who lives in Otley, said her father was an independent financial adviser to Mr Corbett, who invented Sooty in 1948 and lived in nearby Guiseley.

    Her mother, Jackie Jowett, died from breast cancer aged 46 in 1980, and she said the entertainer stepped in to help the children through a difficult time.

    Memorabilia from the Sooty shows, which debuted on television in 1952, have become highly prized, with one puppet selling for £14,500 in 2018.

    The three puppets have been given a guide price of £5,000 to £7,000 when they are sold at auction on 19 November.

    A new photo has been released showing what a missing Doncaster man who disappeared in 2007 when he was still a teenager could look like today.

    Andrew Gosden was last seen in London in September 2007 when he vanished, aged just 14. He had just got off a train from Doncaster.

    Now, using age-progression technology, a series of pictures has been released showing, external what he could look like aged 26.

    There have been no positive sightings since his disappearance 12 years ago.

    A one-year-old girl has been taken to hospital in Hull after being bitten by a dog.

    The dog was seized by police following the attack, which left the girl with minor injuries to her head on Ravenser Close.

    The family pet is in the car of a dog warden, according to police.

    A police investigation has been launched which will determine what happens to the dog.

    The child has since been discharged from hospital, police say.

    People have been stopped by police after cycling on footpaths in Hull.

    Almost 30 people were caught riding their bikes on the path on Newland Avenue earlier today.

    Officers from Humberside Police say they'll take "robust action" against repeat offenders in the future.

    It added "educating the culprits was the priority on this occasion", rather than fines.

    Police in Hornsea are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a woman was hit in the face with a bottle and injured earlier this month.

    The female victim was attacked by another woman on Market Place at about 23:55 on Saturday 19 October.

    She suffered cuts to her face and a broken nose in the attack.

    A man was also attacked during the fight, leaving him with cuts and grazes.

    A woman from Hull who was arrested on suspicion of GBH, and a man, also from Hull, who was arrested on suspicion of ABH, have been released under investigation, police say.

    A van driver was spotted by police sleeping while parked on the hard shoulder of the M18 near Doncaster yesterday.

    South Yorkshire Police said while it agreed "tiredness kills", the hard shoulder wasn't the place for the break.

    The driver was woken up and issued with a fixed penalty notice.

  12. Rare close-ups of North Yorkshire red squirrels releasedpublished at 15:19 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October 2019

    Close-up photographs showing endangered red squirrels foraging for food in a North Yorkshire forest have been released.

    The pictures, taken in the Widdale Red Squirrel Reserve in the Yorkshire Dales, show them scampering along wooden gates and thick branches in search of sustenance.

    There are fears such images could become rarer in years to come, with red squirrel populations in the UK declining.

    The UK Squirrel Accord estimates there are about 140,000 red squirrels in the UK, where years ago there were several million.

    Kay Haw, director of the group, said: "The greatest threat to the UK's red squirrels is competition from and disease transmission by invasive non-native greys.

    "They out-compete red squirrels for food and habitat, which negatively impacts red squirrel reproduction and survival rates."

    Ms Haw said grey squirrels carry but do not contract the squirrel pox virus, which they can transmit to their red counterparts with fatal consequences.

    Witnesses to a fatal collision between a bus and a pedestrian in Huddersfield are being sought by police.

    A 62-year-old woman was hit by a single-decker bus outside Huddersfield bus station on Friday.

    She was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, police say.

    Officers say they want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or the circumstances leading up to it.

    The West Yorkshire force says it particularly wants to hear from anyone who was driving in the area and has dashcam footage.

    Three members of the same family have appeared at Scarborough Magistrates' Court charged with preventing the lawful and decent burial of a woman.

    Rina Yasutake (pictured), 49 was found in a mummified state about six weeks after death at a property on Bondgate in Helmsley in September last year.

    Police found Miss Yasutake on a mattress in an advanced state of decomposition.

    Michiko Yasutake, 76, Yoshika Yasutake, 52, and 47-year-old Takahiro Yasutake, from Helmsley, were granted unconditional bail at Scarborough Magistrates' Court.

    They are due to appear at York Crown Court on 2 December.

    A man and a woman have been arrested over the death of a four-month-old baby in Huddersfield.

    The baby was reported to have stopped breathing at a house in the Dalton area on Sunday morning.

    Police and paramedics attended and the child was later confirmed dead at hospital.

    A man aged 44 and a 31-year-old woman arrested in connection with the child's death have been bailed pending further inquiries, police say.

    A post-mortem examination is expected to take place later this week to determine the cause of the baby's death.
