    Staff at five universities across Yorkshire are set to take part in eight days of strike action later this month in a row over pay, working conditions and rising pension costs.

    Members of the University and College Union (UCU) at the universities of Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York and Sheffield Hallam University will walk out from 25 November to 4 December alongside colleagues from 55 other UK universities.

    UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: "Strike action is a last resort, but staff have made it quite clear that enough is enough and universities can be in no doubt about the strength of feeling.

    "The first wave of strikes will hit institutions later this month unless universities start talking to us seriously about how they are going to deal with rising pension costs and declining pay and conditions."

    E-fit images of three men have been released following an attempted robbery in Huddersfield last month.

    The incident happened in Greenhead Park at about 16:30 on 24 October.

    The three suspects approached the a group of three teenage boys and demanded they handed over money and their belongings.

    They refused and were threatened before managing to run away and approach a man for safety.

    Officers would like to speak anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who recognises any of the men in the images.

    Scientists from the University of Sheffield say they have cracked the code of how a potent bacterial toxin kills MRSA, potentially paving the way towards new treatments for the superbug.

    New research sheds light on how the poison recognises MRSA cell walls and causes the pathogen to break down.

    Lead researcher, Dr Stephane Mesnage, senior lecturer in molecular biology and biotechnology, said: "Hospital-acquired infections caused by bacteria resistant to last-resort antibiotics are on the rise, but our work could lead to the development of new treatments for these superbugs that use the same targeting mechanism."

    A school in Sheffield has unveiled a wall of plants which it's hoped will cut pollution in its playground.

    Children at Hunters Bar Infant School have been fundraising for a living pollution barrier which will trap pollutants, stopping the students breathing them in.

    The Sharrow Vale Road school is near the busy Hunters Bar roundabout.

    The barrier is made up of trees, plants and ivy and will form part of a four-year study looking at inner-city school air quality and the impact of living green barriers in playgrounds.

  8. Appeal after teenager assaulted at Halloween party in Hubypublished at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2019

    Police are appealing for information after a teenage boy was assaulted at a Halloween party in North Yorkshire at the weekend.

    The 15-year-old suffered serious cuts to his head at a house in Walton Close in Huby, near Easingwold, on the evening of 31 October and needed hospital treatment.

    Two 17-year-old boys were arrested in connection with the incident and have been released under investigation, police say.

    It's believed some of the guests had travelled to the party from the Scarborough and York areas, police say.

    Officers want anyone who was there and who hasn't yet spoken to police to get in touch.

    A union has criticised Bradford Council over proposed cuts to libraries and museums in the district as its members begin the second stage of strike action.

    Fifty members of the Unite union working in Bradford's libraries and museums have started a three-day strike today after striking for two days last month.

    A four-day strike is planned for 18-21 November and a five-day stoppage is planned for 2-6 December.

    Unite say the council's attitude is in contrast with its bid to be UK City of Culture 2025.

    The council has previously said it is "disappointed" with the decision to take industrial action which its says will "primarily impact library service users and be of no benefit to staff or residents".

    A number of war memorials in South Yorkshire have been given listed status ahead of Remembrance Day.

    The eleven memorials were given the Grade II-listed status as part of Historic England's commitment to list the monuments across the country.

    The reason for the listings is for their historic interest and to mark the impact the wars for which they were erected had on communities.

    The memorials are in Maltby, Mosborough, Norton, Woodhouse, Halfway, Hackenthorpe, Totley, Stannington, Grenoside, Highfields and Denaby.

    Plans to put the North at the centre of the UK's drive to reduce carbon emissions will be the subject of a major conference in Hull later.

    Business leaders and delegates from across the country will be in the city for the next two days.

    They'll be discussing how the North could lead the move towards renewable energy and lower carbon emissions.

    The University of Hull recently announced the opening of a new building that would focus on harnessing the power of offshore wind.

    A former co-owner of Sheffield United has written to the Court of Appeal asking for permission to appeal a recent judgement that saw him lose control of the club.

    Kevin McCabe (above left) was ordered to sell his 50% share in the club after losing a High Court battle against fellow owner Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (above right).

    Now Mr McCabe has lodged an application to appeal the ruling.

    He said: "As I said, when the outcome of the trial was made public, I do have misgivings about some aspects of the judgment and hope that the Court of Appeal agree to have another look at it."

    Rangers say people are ignoring a ban on fireworks on an area of moorland in West Yorkshire devastated by fire.

    Fireworks have been banned on Marsden Moor since huge areas were damaged earlier this year by fire.

    The National Trust says its found evidence of people ignoring the rules and setting off fireworks.

    Leeds Rhinos will play Hull FC on the same day.

    Police are continuing to investigate a shooting in West Yorkshire last night which left two men seriously injured with gunshot wounds.

    Emergency services were called to Huddersfield Road, Liversedge, at about 19:10 to reports of a shooting.

    Two men, aged 22 and 27, were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

    Police are searching for the suspects who were said to be in a small dark coloured vehicle.

    The road remains closed as police appeal for witnesses or people with camera footage to come forward.

    Police officers are appealing for help to find a 16-year-old girl missing from Sheffield.

    Tayla Pope was last seen in the early hours of Sunday morning on Carterknowle Road.

    She is described as having light brown hair and being about 5ft 4ins.

    She is thought to be wearing a black bodysuit, black heels and carrying a black handbag.

    The mother of a boy who was killed by a tractor near Leeds is calling for quicker changes to drink-driving laws.

    Pam Whitlam has been campaigning to change the law since her 11-year-old son Harry was knocked down on a farm by a drunk tractor driver in Tingley in 2013.

    Gary Green had more than twice the legal alcohol level in his system for driving on roads, but could only be prosecuted under health and safety legislation rather than road traffic law as he was on private land.

    Green, 51, from Wakefield, was jailed for 16 months and two weeks at Leeds Crown Court after admitting failing to ensure the safety of others.

    Two men have been left seriously injured after a shooting in West Yorkshire this evening.

    The male victims, aged 27 and 22, were shot in an incident on Huddersfield Road in Liversedge.

    They have been taken to hospital.

    Police, who were called at 19:10, believe the suspects behind the attack fled after the shooting in a small, dark-coloured vehicle.

    The road, at its junction with Lumb Lane, has been closed while police officers investigate the full circumstances of the incident.

    A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Officers are also conducting high visibility patrols in the vicinity to offer reassurance and support to the local community."
