Chris Blacksell spoke out after an investigation by the JPIMedia Data Unit, external found Humberside Fire and Rescue recorded 12 attacks on firefighters during 2018-19.
The probe also found the Yorkshire and Humber area is the second worst in the country for the number of attacks, behind West Midlands.
Mr Blacksell said staff have had to deal with a range of assaults:
Quote MessageWe've had everything from verbal assaults to people being seriously assaulted and hospitalised sadly from attacks on fire crews. It's really disheartening. We spend all our working lives trying to keep people safe and to end up under attack by people like that is really bad for crews."

She was convicted by a jury after a trial at the court centre.
A long-running pay dispute which prompted teaching staff at a West Yorkshire college to strike has ended.
Members of the University and College Union (UCU) at Bradford College took 10 days of strike action between November 2018 and July 2019 in a row over pay and threats to 131 jobs.
The UCU said the industrial action had come to an end after Bradford College agreed to rule out compulsory redundancies and improve pay for staff on hourly-paid contracts.
UCU regional official Julie Kelley said: "This welcome deal at Bradford College improves the job security, status and pay for staff at the college.
"Nobody ever wants to take strike action, but these improvements are a testament to members’ determination to fight for a fairer deal."
In a statement, the college said it was "pleased" the dispute had been resolved.
A spokesperson said: "To resolve the long-running pay dispute, the college has awarded staff additional annual leave through college closures at Christmas and Easter and established a policy and agreement around anti-casualisation through a new Contracts of Employment Policy.
"The Executive Leadership Team recognises the commitment and dedication of all college employees and also the positive progress made with UCU in recent months.”

Money set aside for policing predicted protests at fracking sites in South Yorkshire will now instead be spent "fighting crime", the county's police and crime commissioner (PCC) has said.
At the weekend, the government announced it had called a halt to shale gas extraction - or fracking - in England amid fears about earthquakes.
The indefinite suspension came after a report by the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA), external said it was not possible to predict the probability or size of tremors caused by the practice.
Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire's PCC, welcomed the decision to halt fracking and said £1m had previously been set aside for policing predicted protests.
Anti-fracking protests in places like Kirby Misperton in North Yorkshire have cost the police over £110,000 a month.
The money set aside in the force's budget in South Yorkshire will now "be better spent on fighting crime", Dr Billings said.
