    Several metres of the wall off Carbrook Street, near Meadowhall shopping centre, have collapsed under the pressure of the water.

    More than a month's worth of rain fell in Sheffield on Thursday.

    Firefighters have helped an 86-year-old woman who was trapped in her home by floodwater - by fetching her food and a hot drink.

    The woman's house was surrounded by floodwater in Rotherham, but photographer Rich Sayles said "she didn't want to leave".

    Instead South Yorkshire firefighters went to fetch her some shopping and a cup of tea and then used a pole to lift the items to her upstairs window.

    Some people in Doncaster are making efforts to shore up their homes by putting sandbags outside as flood levels rise in the town.

    People living on Yarborough Terrace, in Bentley, are doing what they can to limit the damage to their homes.

    Shannon, who lives on the street, said she is not insured.

    "It is what it is, what can I do? I can't do anything about it. I just wish the council had done more," she said.

    "I was told last night we were going to get flooded so last night they could've put sandbags out and prevented a little more of the damage.

    "I had a text message, an email and a phone call from the Environment Agency so I put everything up high last night.

    "The water's above skirting boards but below the sockets in my house it's everywhere, in every room, every room's covered.

    "We're getting people in boats, in baths, in boxes, anything you can get them in just to wheel them out.

    "I had to get my kids and dog out in a boat. Now they're staying with family members and I'm back to help my neighbours."

  5. Doncaster flooding: Residents 'stranded' on estatepublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2019

    A man living close to the River Don, between Doncaster and Barnsley, says residents on his housing estate have been left "stranded" by flood water.

    Six severe flood alerts, external are currently in place for locations in the Doncaster area following yesterday's heavy rain.

    Tim McNeil, who lives in Mexborough, says: "We're currently stranded on our housing estate because of 3ft of flood water at every exit.

    "There are still some people trying to get out, but there's nothing you're going to do to get off this estate today.

    "From the end of my street you can see the newer part of the estate and that's 3ft or 4ft underwater because it's in a dip, then at the other end, the main road's just like a river.

    "Our plan's to get everything valuable off the ground and hope we don't lose much."

    People living in Bentley are "desperately" putting sandbags outside their homes as flood levels rise.

    It's just up from Willow Bridge Caravan Site, which saw about 60 people rescued by the emergency services earlier.

  8. Six severe 'danger to life' warnings issuedpublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2019

    In the last few minutes, a sixth "danger to life" flooding warning has been issued by the Environment Agency (EA) for South Yorkshire.

    This time it's on the River Don at Bentley.

    Consequently, flooding of properties and roads adjacent to Swaith Dike is expected today, the EA said.

  10. Doncaster flooding: Residents 'playing the waiting game'published at 11:35 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2019

    A woman living close to the River Don, near Doncaster, says residents have been put on evacuation alert after a severe flood warning was issued.

    In total, six severe flood alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency for Barnby Dun, Bentley, Kirk Bramwith, Kirk Sandall, South Bramwith and Willow Bridge Caravan.

    Maureen Parker, who lives in South Bramwith, says she was put on evacuation notice at 07:00 this morning.

    "The bridges are closed and everyone's just playing the waiting game," she said.

    "The council came around and told us to prepare to leave. They said they'd come back and help us to evacuate and give us instructions when and if necessary.

    "We've lived here 20 years and have had these situations before, thankfully we've never had to evacuate.

    "Our house has never been flooded but we've never had a red evacuation warning before so that's a little bit concerning."

    A phone shop employee based at the flood-hit Meadowhall shopping centre has described seeing people wandering around not able to get out and worried children unable to find their parents.

    About 30 people were forced to spend the night at the shopping centre after flooding caused chaos on the roads around the area.

    Martin Sapcote, who works at Carphone Warehouse, said he was there late into the night.

    "We had lots of children running through Meadowhall panicking because they couldn't get in touch with their families and didn't know how to get home," he explained.

    "We ended up with a shop full of customers who were all charging up their phones to get in touch with loved ones.

    "It was just confusion at some points because people were walking around not being able to get out, not being able to get in touch with people and not knowing what to do."

  12. Doncaster to Adwick train line reopens after floodingpublished at 11:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2019

    Train operator Northern say the line between Doncaster and Adwick has now reopened.

    The route had been closed following flooding at Adwick.

    Northern said the first train to run will be the 11:21 Leeds to Doncaster service.

    More than 50 people had to be rescued from their static homes after a caravan site near Doncaster flooded.

    People at Willow Bridge Caravan Site were lead to safety after the River Don overtopped in the area.

    South Yorkshire police officer Liam Watson said he had been on a 12-and-a-half hour shift helping to rescue "some 50-60 people from their static caravans" and take them to designated evacuation centres.

    He said many of the people were elderly and vulnerable.

    A severe flood warning remains in place for the area surrounding the caravan site.

    Much of Rotherham alongside the River Don flooded yesterday and overnight after a day of torrential rain.

    More than 100 people were rescued from the Parkgate shopping centre by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, with one of those having to hitch a ride on boat to return their briefly this morning.

    Emma Cookson works at Pets At Home and needed to check on the safety of the animals in the store.

    "There's damage to the shop as the water's inside but it's just paddling really so the animals are perfectly fine," she explained.

    "One side of Parkgate, the side with Morrisons on, that looks OK but the side we're on with Wilkos that's under water.

    "Last night we had to rescue my parents' caravan that was flooded in Mexborough so yeah it's been quite an upset really.

    "In 2007 I wasn't here [for the flooding] because I was on holiday so it's quite an eye-opener to be here this time and see the destruction that it's actually caused."

    About 100 people stayed at Rotherham town hall overnight, the council has said.

    It's after severe weather led to flooding, displacing some people in the area.

    Among those forced to spend the night were a number of members of staff from the nearby Parkgate shopping centre.
