    The forecasted height of the river in Doncaster will be 6.43m, the Environment Agency says.

    There are five severe flood warnings in place and can be viewed here , external- this means there is a risk to life and people need to act immediately.

    Meadowhall shopping centre is due to be open as normal today after heavy rain and flooding left dozens of customers trapped overnight.

    The River Don outside the centre overtopped the flood defences, leading to flooding outside and road closures in the surrounding area.

    In a statement a spokesperson said: "Whilst the extreme weather conditions persist in some parts of the region, the centre remains dry and secure. It is therefore our intention to open at our normal time of 10.00am today.

    "We anticipate that nearly 80,000 people visited Meadowhall yesterday and less than 30 customers remained in our building throughout the night.

    "For those who were unable to get to their home safely or preferred to stay with us due to adverse weather conditions where they live, we looked after them by providing an array of blankets, coats and towels as well as a continuous supply of refreshments.”

  4. Fire service took 500 calls and helped more than 100 peoplepublished at 09:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2019

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say they rescued more than 100 people and dealt with more than 500 emergency calls overnight as torrential rain battered the region.

    The calls, taken between 22:00 and 04:00 this morning, all related to flooding.

    A number of services are helping the South Yorkshire flood effort, with West Midlands, Greater Manchester, North Yorkshire, Lancashire and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Services among those lending a hand.

    Train operator Northern has released this picture showing the flooding at Rotherham station, with trains currently suspended across large parts of the rail network in Yorkshire, external.

    A Northern spokesperson said: "The Friday morning peak will still see disruption on several routes and disruption is likely for the rest of the day in some areas.

    "We are still advising customers on a small number of routes - particularly in South Yorkshire - not to travel as flooding is making rail and road travel extremely difficult.

    "Colleagues at Network Rail have inspected the tracks and working hard to return them to normal working, but at present we have no estimate as to when we will be able to operate services on the affected routes."

  6. Fire & Rescue: Effort will shift to Doncaster todaypublished at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2019

    The main focus of today's rescue operation will shift to Doncaster, say South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue.

    Assistant Chief Fire Officer Steve Helps has described using "five additional high volume pumps and 10 rescue boats" to help rescue more than 100 people from Meadowhall and the Parkgate centre overnight.

    People have been sharing their experiences of the floods today, with many praising the emergency services for their work.

    Firefighters have been working throughout the night, supported by South Yorkshire Police, councils and the Environment Agency.

    One South Yorkshire police officer took to Twitter to praise South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, external, saying: "Amazing work by all of your staff through the night, some working 24 hour shifts! Genuine life savers tonight, without them many would have been at risk."

    Michael from Sheffield called BBC Radio Sheffield to say: "They're doing a fantastic job. God bless them all."

    All tram services are back up and running today following severe weather in Sheffield.

    There is one change to normal service though - safety checks are set to be carried out at Tinsley following high water on the River Don.

    This means services won't serve Meadowhall.

    The Tram Train service isn't running either as the track is flooded (above picture).

    Rail passengers are being advised not to travel after flooding across Yorkshire left several lines underwater.

    Trains in the following areas have been affected:

    • Services are currently unable to run between Sheffield and Gainsborough Central/Lincoln Central;
    • All lines between Barnsley and Huddersfield are closed due to severe flooding at Shepley;
    • Trains are unable to run between Sheffield and Leeds via Moorthorpe because of severe flooding at Moorthorpe;
    • Trains are currently unable to run between Goole and Sheffield due to dangerously high river levels that are expected to peak throughout the morning;
    • Flooding in the South Elmsall and Adwick area means trains are currently unable to run between Leeds and Doncaster;
    • Due to severe flooding across the TransPennine Express network, trains are unable to run between Manchester Piccadilly and Cleethorpes;
    • Severe flooding at Rotherham Central, Moorthorpe and Conisbrough is resulting in services between Sheffield and Doncaster being suspended until further notice.

    The River Don has hit its highest recorded level in Doncaster, according to the monitoring station on the river.

    It follows severe "threat to life" warnings being issued for the town.

    It's currently at just over 6.3m, higher than it was in 2007 when it also flooded.

    The Environment Agency has previously told the BBC that the river will peak at about midday today.

    This is forecast to be 6.43m.

    The river is rising as it takes several hours for rainwater to filter through the Upper Don catchment into the River Don.

    The Environment Agency (EA) is telling people to take their severe warnings seriously and evacuate.

    It comes as a number of severe "threat to life" warnings are being issued for the Doncaster area.

    Fran Lowe, from the EA, said: "Pay attention to our flood warnings and alerts - take these warnings very seriously as they represent a threat to life.

    "Respond immediately and get out of any place affected by a severe flood warning."

    This is the latest view at Meadowhall where people have had to leave their cars in floodwater.

    At its height at about 22:00 last night, the rising water saw cars fully submerged, but now the water level has dropped considerably.

    Cars can be seen again with the police keeping the road closed as the council attempts to clear the water.

    It's where the River Don and the River Dun navigation run alongside each other.

    The council says the breach is at St Oswald's Church.

    Residents are being told to evacuate their homes immediately with a risk to life warning currently in place.

    There are homes 200m (640ft) away from where the river has breached.
