A grandmother has told the BBC about her experience trapped in Meadowhall when police asked people not to leaving the shopping centre due to gridlock caused by flooding in the area.

Olive Wilson, 69, from Barnsley, travelled to Meadowhall for the Christmas lights switch-on which was due to take place at the shopping centre this evening.

She planned to do some Christmas shopping as her granddaughter and her friend attended the concert.

But after flooding in the area caused major traffic problems, the event was cancelled and police asked shoppers not to leave Meadowhall.

Olive (pictured, right, with daughter Linzi at Meadowhall) has told the BBC: "We've had coffee and cake in the Debenhams cafe. They're still open for us.

"Other shops have closed, you can see the staff inside them waiting."

She says she and her family are looking at possibly staying at a nearby hotel if they can't make the journey back to Barnsley.

"We will have to see if there are any rooms at the nearby hotel. While we're here, we're warm and we're dry".
