    Meadowhall's Christmas Live event will go ahead tonight despite major rainfall and a number of flood warnings being issued.

    Precautionary measures have been taken, with flood defences being deployed, a spokesperson for the Sheffield shopping centre said.

    A Sheffield councillor has warned people in the flood-hit city to "stay at home – this is a full-blown incident."

    Councillor Mark Jones, cabinet member for environment, streetscene and climate change says the city is struggling to cope with serious flooding following torrential rainfall today.

    He said: "This is not great, I am not going to lie to you. The rain is going to get worse again tonight. We have a full emergency service running and we are monitoring the situation as best we can but we are inundated."

    "It’s all hands on deck, everything is being activated and mobilised but the fire service and [council contractors] Amey are working at full capacity.

    "There is extensive flooding throughout the north of Sheffield. Stay inside and think twice about travelling. It is not a night to be out on the roads.

    "The advice is: stay home, stay warm and dry and stay safe. Don’t travel unless absolutely necessary."

    Train operator Northern has issued "do not travel" advice for passengers using three routes.

    Flooding has closed the lines between Sheffield and Gainsborough, Sheffield and Lincoln and Hebden Bridge and Manchester Victoria.

    The firm said roads are also closed in the corresponding areas, meaning "customers should not attempt to travel".

    With flood warnings across Yorkshire, the Environment Agency has been helping clear flooded roads in the region.

    In Catcliffe, Rotherham a pump has been moving water from Orgeave Road to the River Rother.

    The govenrment agency says it has teams out across Yorkshire helping to manage the current flood risk.

    Two people had to be led to safety following flooding in Whiston, near Rotherham earlier, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said.

    The fire service were called to help on Moorhouse Lane where they said two homes had been flooded.

  7. Watch: Callis Bridge warning at River Calder in Todmordenpublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2019

    A warning's been issued to avoid the River Calder at Callis Bridge in Todmorden in West Yorkshire.

    Police in the area posted this video on social media of the fast flowing water.

    The river in the area is currently 1.3m above its normal height.

    According to River Levels UK, the highest level ever recorded for the river at this location is 2.5m, which was reached during the Boxing Day floods of 2015.

    A Sheffield business is warning people who might be driving in the Woodseats area of a large build up of surface water on the A61.

  10. Flood warning issued for River Derwent in North Yorkshirepublished at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2019

    The Environment Agency (EA) has issued a Flood Warning for the River Derwent at Buttercrambe Mill near York.

    The river is currently 1.2m above its normal level and is forecast to rise again at about 16:00.

    A Flood Warning is the second highest level of alert it means flooding is expected and immediate action is required

    People are being warned to avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and avoid driving through any floodwater.

    The EA says its staff are closely monitoring the forecast.

    Heavy rain across Yorkshire has lead to problems on the road, with several road closures already in place already.

    In Barnsley, Sheffield Road, near Harley, is heavily flooded. These pictures show the floodwater across the carriageway where Harley Dike has overflowed.

  12. Flood alerts in place after heavy downpours across countypublished at 13:32 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2019

    There are currently 16 flood warnings in place across Yorkshire as the county continues to be deluged by heavy rain.

    The Environment Agency say flooding is expected in areas across the north, south and west of the region as "river levels have risen rapidly as a result of today’s heavy rainfall".

    The flooding is causing problems on roads around the county, with several road closures already in place in Sheffield and Wakefield.

    Train services through Kiveton Park are also affected while Supertram say services between Tinsley and Rotherham have been suspended.

    Temporary flood barriers have been put in place in some parts of West Yorkshire as a result of heavy rain across the region.

    The barriers pictured above have been put up in Mytholmroyd, in the Upper Calder Valley, as a "precaution" against the heavy rain forecast for the rest of today and for tomorrow, according to the Environment Agency.

    An incident room has been set up by the Environment Agency in the area, it's been confirmed.

    Passengers on the East Coast Main Line running between Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and London are being warned about delays.

    Rail passengers in South Yorkshire are being warned of delays and cancellations to services after a vehicle collided with level crossing barriers between Meadowhall and Rotherham.

    Train operator Northern says services running through Rotherham, Meadowhall and Swinton currently have to run at reduced speed on all lines.

  16. Flooding causes road closures in South Yorkshirepublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2019

    Several roads have been closed in South Yorkshire as a result of heavy rain across the region.

    Road between Hoyland and Chapeltown

    These roads are currently closed, according to Sheffield City Council:

    • Ecclesall Road South
    • Parkway Drive
    • Mickley Lane
    • Fife Street

    Meanwhile, the A6135 Sheffield Road is currently closed in both directions from Harley Road to Hoyland Road (B6096) at Hoyland Common.

    One lane is also closed due to flooding on the M1 southbound before J34 Tinsley Viaduct, though traffic is said to be coping well.

    A lane closure's in place on the M1 southbound between the slips at J32 for the M18 due to flooding, with contractors on scene and dealing with the issue.

    With rain expected to continue throughout the day, Sheffield City Council has advised people to travel "only if absolutely necessary".

    A flood alert's now in place for part of the River Calder.

    People living and working in the Lower River Calder catchment area are being warned that low-lying areas are currently at risk.

    Flooding of properties is not forecast at this point, according to the government's flood warning information service, external.

    A police officer has been charged with the murder of footballer Dalian Atkinson who was killed in 2016.

    The ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker, 48, died after being Tasered by officers at his father's house in Telford, Shropshire, on 15 August.

    A second police officer, also from the West Mercia Police force, has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.

    Both defendants will appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court later.

    Mr Atkinson started his career at Ipswich Town before moving to Sheffield Wednesday, Real Sociedad, Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe in Turkey.

    A motorcyclist who died after colliding with a parked car in South Yorkshire last month has been named by police.

    Conner Wainwright, 23, was riding his Kawasaki Ninja motorbike along Ryton Road, in North Anston, near Rotherham, on 24 October when he lost control and crashed into a stationary vehicle.

    Emergency services attended but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

    South Yorkshire Police have appealed for who witnessed the collision or saw the green Kawasaki Ninja prior to the crash to come forward.
