    The British Red Cross has announced it's given £50,000 to help people worst affected by flooding in Yorkshire and the Midlands.

    The money, which is from their "disaster fund", will be given to the South Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF).

    Families who are struggling to buy food as they live in temporary accommodation are one of the groups the British Red Cross is trying to help, it said.

    Ruth Willis, from SYCF, said: "Right now, people across South Yorkshire have been left devastated.

    "This contribution to the South Yorkshire Flood Disaster Relief Appeal will help so many people to regain a little normality back into their lives.”

    A phone app has saved a teenager and his father who became stranded on a ledge while out walking in South Yorkshire, say police.

    The pair called for assistance after getting stuck on a ledge with a 40ft drop at Langsett Reservoir, near Barnsley, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    The force says call handlers then used the What3Words app to pinpoint their exact location and sent police and Woodhead Mountain Rescue to the area.

    What3words developers divided the world into 57 trillion squares, each measuring 3m by 3m (10ft by 10ft) giving each a unique, randomly assigned three-word address.

    The boy and his father were successfully rescued, with no injuries reported.

    Earlier this year, police urged everyone to download the smartphone app.

    A man's been charged with attempted murder after a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in Sheffield.

    Police say during the attack the teenager received wounds to his arm and leg.

    The boy was found injured on Earl Marshall Road.

    Officers were called to the Northern General Hospital last Friday after reports he had arrived at A&E with serious injuries.

    Bilal Baz, 24, of Kirton Road, Sheffield, is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court later.

    Hull City owner Assem Allam has donated almost £8m to the city's health service.

    Dr Allam's donation will go towards create a new centre for the treatment of diabetes and metabolic bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, in East Yorkshire.

    He said: “I moved to this part of the UK in 1968 and I am passionate about this region and the people of East Yorkshire.

    “People have always been very good to me and my family and we are grateful to them for their support and kindness.

    "For those reasons we want to demonstrate our gratitude by investing in healthcare facilities."

    Chris Long, the chief executive of Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, described Dr Allam’s generosity as unprecedented in modern times.

    He said: “You would have to go back 100 years to find anyone who donated so much of their personal wealth for the benefit of this community, in terms of their health and the care we provide for patients.

    “We are extremely grateful to Dr Allam for this latest donation which will leave a legacy for patients in this region for generations to come.”

    Dr Allam, who bought a controlling stake in Hull City in 2010, is reported to have an estimated net worth of £210m.

    Almost 40 pumps are working flat out to remove more than one milllion cubic meters of water a day in a Doncaster village.

    Fishlake saw floodwater as high as 2m in places, but this has since dropped to 0.3m, the Environment Agency said.

    An appeal's continuing to trace a Leeds drug dealer who escaped from prison in Lancashire last month.

    Kearon Tyrone Hunte, 32, escaped from HMP Kirkham on 5 October, where he was serving a six-year sentence for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

    He is from Chapeltown in Leeds and has links across West Yorkshire, police say.

    Hunte is described as black, 5ft 10ins tall, of medium build, with black hair and brown eyes.

    Officers are asking anyone who has seen him, or has any information which could help trace him, to get in touch.

    Train operator LNER has apologised to commuters in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire facing major delays after a train derailed in Leeds.

    Services between Leeds, Lincoln and Kings Cross are affected after an empty passenger service struck a stationary train at the Neville Hill depot last night (pictured above).

    In a statement, LNER said: "We apologise to any customers who may have their journeys disrupted."

    No-one was injured but disruption is expected on the network until about 18:30.

    A Network Rail spokesperson said the disruption was because access was restricted to the depot which is used by a number of train operators.

  13. Doncaster flooding: More troops on standbypublished at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2019

    About 200 troops remain on standby to help those already on the ground working to shore up flood defences in Doncaster.

    The Ministry of Defence said 200 troops from the Light Dragoons and 2 Royal Anglian are already in South Yorkshire helping the fire service and other authorities along the River Don.

    If needed, they can also be drafted in to help warning and informing residents and to support potential evacuation efforts from high risk or flooded areas.

    Another 200 personnel remain on standby should more troops be needed to help, the MoD said.

    CCTV images of four men have been released by police after two people had their phones stolen in street thefts in Leeds last month.

    The thefts happened near Merrion Street in Leeds city centre between 04:00 and 05:00 on 17 October.

    A 22-year-old woman was pushed to the ground and robbed of her phone by two of the men.

    A 20-year-old man then had his phone grabbed from his hand by the other two men in a separate incident nearby.

    Police believe the four men pictured in the images were operating together in the area.

    Officers are asking anyone who recognises any of the men or who might have any information about the incidents to get in touch.

    Emergency crews will be on standby today as more rain's expected to hit parts of Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire already hit by flooding, Humberside Fire and Rescue says.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" weather warning, saying as much as 30mm could fall in areas already affected.

    Waithe Beck, near Waltham in North East Lincolnshire, still has a flood warning in place.

    Another remains in force at Patrington Haven in East Yorkshire, but the Met Office's yellow weather warning for rain does not cover that area.

    Humberside Fire and Rescue Service says it will have crews in place from 09:00 this morning ready for any localised flooding across the region.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found dead at a house in Huddersfield.

    The victim, in his 60s, was discovered on Tuesday when police were called to the property in Whingrove Avenue.

    He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 16:20.

    A 34-year-old man is in custody. West Yorkshire Police said detectives were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

    Residents in flood-stricken Fishlake near Doncaster are braced for more rain, with forecasters warning there could be a danger to life.

    The village has been cut off by recent flooding, with hundreds of people being forced to leave their properties.

    About 200 Army personnel are in South Yorkshire supporting the flood effort.

    A yellow 'be aware' weather warning for rain is in place, external for areas around Sheffield and Doncaster from 09:00.

    The Met Office said the warning meant fast flowing or deep flood water was possible, "causing a danger to life".

    The heaviest of the rain is expected to hit between 09:00 and 10:00 and continue throughout the day, with the warning in place until 03:00 on Friday.

    "Even some amount of rain could cause rivers to rise," Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said.

    About 500 homes have been flooded in Doncaster, with 1,200 properties evacuated in areas hit by the floods.
