1. Attempted street robbery on mother with baby in Leedspublished at 15:45 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2019

    Police are appealing for information following the attempted robbery of a mother with her baby in Leeds.

    The 21-year-old victim was walking in the park near Abbey House Museum, in Kirkstall Road, when a man approached her and asked for the time at about 17:30 on Saturday, police say.

    As she walked on, the man ran up to her and put his hand in her coat pocket knocking her into the pushchair and causing her and her baby to fall to the ground.

    Neither was injured and nothing was stolen.

    The man was described as white, about 5ft 9ins tall and of stocky, medium build. He was wearing a dark zip-up jacket and dark jogging bottoms.

    He ran off in the general direction of Horsforth.

    Officers are looking into whether it's linked to a similar street robbery at about 03:00 on Sunday near TGI Friday’s on Kirkstall Road, by a man who asked the victim the time.

    When the man looked at his phone, the suspect barged him out the way and ran off with it.

    A bus driver was stopped by police after being seen trying to go round a roundabout in North Ferriby while using his mobile phone.

    Humberside Police pulled the double-decker bus driver over after witnessing the incident.

    In his attempt to use his mobile, he reportedly only had one hand free to drive the vehicle.

    The driver said he was using the phone because his boss called him telling him not to rush back, the force said on Twitter, external.

    A former West Yorkshire Police employee has been charged in connection with the theft of money from a police property store in Kirklees.

    Andrew Roberts, 53, of Huddersfield, has been charged with nine counts of fraud and two counts of perverting the course of justice.

    The offences are said to have taken place between October 2008 and June 2017.

    The force said Mr Roberts no longer works for them but refused to say whether he was a police officer or a civilian member of staff.

    He is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates's Court on Wednesday.

    Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries following a crash between a motorbike and a taxi in Bradford on Saturday.

    The motorbike rider, a man in his 30s, and an 18-year-old pillion passenger were injured in the crash on Dawnay Road at about 17:15.

    The 18-year-old passenger remains in hospital.

    Anybody who saw the crash or the red Honda motorbike and a black Skoda Octavia taxi beforehand is asked to get in touch with West Yorkshire Police.

    A book written by Charlotte Bronte at the age of 14 will return "home" after being bought at auction by the Bronte Society.

    The miniature work, called The Young Men's Magazine, will go to the Parsonage Museum in the Brontes' old home in Haworth, West Yorkshire.

    It was bought in Paris for €780,000 (£666,000).

    The museum lost out on the book when it last went under the hammer in 2011.

    The work is one of six "little books" written by Charlotte, the eldest of the three sisters, in 1830. Five are known to survive, and the Bronte Parsonage Museum already holds the other four.

    An inmate found guilty of attempting to kill prison officers and another prisoner has been given three life sentences.

    Aklakur Rahman, 32, carried out the attacks at prisons in Norfolk, Lincoln and Wakefield.

    Rahman,originally from Ipswich, used makeshift weapons, including razor blades and a piece of masonry to carry out the attacks.

    Passing sentence at Birmingham Crown Court, Mr Justice Pepperall said Rahman had prepared "the most dangerous weapons he could fashion from the limited materials available to him".

    Detective Inspector Kevin Brown, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: “It really is a blessing that no one was killed during what were extremely determined and violent attacks.”

    At least 600 people have signed a petition calling for the reversal of security restrictions at York Christmas Market which mean some traders could have to work 16-hour days.

    Plans to temporarily restrict traders' access to the Shambles Market mean some stallholders won't be able to get to their vans until 20:00 having been there since the early hours.

    But Make it York, which aims to develop the city's economy, says the measures are needed to keep shoppers in the city centre safe.

    Make it York managing director Sean Bullick said: "Due to the volume of people in the city centre, it would not be safe to allow any vehicles to access Shambles Market before 20:00 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for the duration of the Christmas market."

    Police are asking for help in finding an 89-year-old man who has gone missing from Dewsbury.

    Colin Vasey was reported missing from his home yesterday.

    He is possibly wearing pyjamas and a dark blue dressing gown, police say.

    Officers are "concerned" for Mr Vasey's welfare and are asking anyone who might have seen him to get in touch.

    A driver who tried to get away from police in South Yorkshire ended up getting his car stuck in floodwater before being arrested.

    It happened in Doncaster on Friday afternoon when an unmarked police car tried to stop a Fiat Punto in Kirk Sandall.

    The driver didn't stop for police and ended up near the flood-hit village of Fishlake, where he tried to drive through floodwater.

    The car became stuck in the water and the driver was arrested after he tried to continue his attempt to escape.

    A man has since been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop and three counts of shoplifting, in relation to the incident, police say.

    There are calls for the University of Huddersfield to remove the Duke of York from his post as chancellor, following concerns about his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

    Former Huddersfield University lecturer Dr Stephen Dorril says it must end its association with Prince Andrew.

    "I think it's now become deeply embarrassing. This issue's been raised a number of times and the university's refused to do anything about it and just remained silent," he said.

    "But now it's across the newspapers this is going to go on for some time."

    Dr Dorril spoke after Prince Andrew's interview with BBC Newsnight was aired on Saturday.

    The interview, during which the prince denied having sex with then 17-year-old girl Virginia Giuffre, has been described as a 'car crash' and 'excruciating' by former Buckingham Palace press officer Dickie Arbiter.

    The University of Huddersfield said it had "long ties" to the prince and that following Buckingham Palace's "emphatic denial" of the allegations it had "nothing further to add".

    Dozens of pumps are continuing to move water away from flood-hit homes in and around Doncaster, the Environment Agency (EA) has said.

    In total, 28 pumps, from the fire service and EA are being used in places like Fishlake and Bentley, which were hit by flooding last week.

    Mike Dugher, from the Environment Agency, says it's "a phenomenal pumping effort".

    "We're moving about 15 metric tonnes of water every second", he said.

    "I appreciate there's an awful lot of water out there that's still affecting some people's homes, and roads for access."

    It comes as some families are seeing their damaged homes for the first time.

    Over the weekend Dan Greenslade, whose girlfriend Jade Croft gave birth at the height of the floods ten days ago, was finally able to get in to see the damaged done to his new home (pictured below).

    The Police Federation study put Lincolnshire second only to the Metropolitan Police, with more than 60% of officers reporting low personal morale.

    Meanwhile, Humberside Police have been rated as the happiest force and has seen the largest improvement.

    One of Charlotte Bronte’s "little books", written when she was just 14 years old, is due to go to auction in Paris later.

    The rare manuscript, which is dated 19 August 1830 and is no bigger than a matchbox, features three hand-written stories.

    It is one of six written by Charlotte, with five known to survive.

    The Bronte Parsonage Museum, in Haworth will be bidding, as it already holds the other four and hopes to complete the collection.

    It's expected to fetch at least £650,000.

    A road that runs outside two Sheffield schools is being closed this week as part of a trial to make the area safer.

    Bannerdale Road will be closed between Abbeydale Road and Carter Knowle Road for an hour before and after school to help pupils going to and from Holt House and Carterknowle School.

    From today the road will be closed between 08:15 and 09:15 and between 14:45 and 15:45.

    More than 25,000 visitors have been over the past six weeks to see the Michelangelo: A Different View exhibition.

    Created from high-resolution versions of photographs of the frescos, its creators said the show offered "an otherwise impossible close-up view" of the artist's brushwork.

    It is also the first time the frescos have been displayed in a religious setting outside the Vatican.

    Its next destination is a monastery in Austria.
