    It's been four years since a man from Skipton went missing in York.

    Rory Johnson-Hatfield, 29, was last seen in 2015 close to the River Ouse in the city centre.

    There've been a number of river searches over the last four years and the investigation remains ongoing.

    North Yorkshire Police initially feared he had fallen in the River Ouse, but his family disagrees. His body has not been found despite searches.

    Two years ago, a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "We never stop looking for a missing person and Rory continues to be a missing person until he is found."

    A burglar has been jailed for his involvement in a Cumbrian house break-in, four months after he failed to show at court to be sentenced.

    Anthony Padgett, 23, was one of two men who admitted burgling a house at Kirkby Stephen in March, stealing a widow's property including wedding photographs and a Royal Victorian Order medal given to her husband.

    The property was recovered when they were arrested later that day, and in July, the other man was jailed for just under four years, but Padgett, of Braithwaite Way, Keighley, failed to appear in court.

    Recently Padgett handed himself in to police and today Recorder Patrick Palmer sentenced him to 32 months in prison for the break-in, and another four months to follow for failing to attend court.

    According to its online manifesto, external, though the party did not campaign for or against leaving the European Union in the run up to the 2016 referendum it "pledged to respect whatever decision the electorate made".

    In light of the result, its leaders say that post-Brexit they want the UK to be able to trade freely with Europe but to be able to strike trade deals with other countries around the world, and, to that effect, they would push for the UK to join the Free Trade Association, external.

    The party also believes "powers that are returned from Europe after Brexit should be devolved to Yorkshire".

    A West Yorkshire nature reserve is being officially opened today in memory of a local RSPB conservationist.

    The charity has bought the Fairburn Tips site, near Castleford, thanks in part to the work of Roy Taylor, who died last year from Motor Neurone Disease.

    A 2km nature trail of the coal tips has now been renamed in his honour.

    A woman from Leeds will be sentenced next month after admitting causing a fatal crash on the A17 in Lincolnshire.

    Marilyn Cook pleaded guilty to a charge of causing death by careless driving of Mary Marshall-Sheriff.

    It follows a collision at Heckington, near Sleaford, between an Audi Q3 driven by Cook and another car on 9 August 2018.

    Cook, 72, of Scott Green Crescent, Gildersome, Leeds, was today given an interim driving ban.

    She was granted bail to reappear before Lincoln Crown Court (pictured) on 17 December for sentencing.

    A Sheffield councillor has had the whip removed by the Labour Party after he breached the council's code of conduct.

    Walkley councillor Neale Gibson has been sanctioned following two complaints to the council’s standards board.

    Cllr Gibson declined to comment but he said he would be appealing to the Labour Party regional office against the decision by Sheffield Labour Group.

    No details have been released about the complaints but it’s believed they were made by a member of the public and upheld by the standards board.

    A Labour Group spokesman said: “Cllr Neale Gibson has had the Labour Group whip withdrawn for a period of 60 days following two standards complaints where it was determined he had breached the code of conduct.”

    Cllr Gibson was elected in 2012 and is cabinet adviser for environment, street scene and climate change.

    Two athletes from West Yorkshire have been named on a 10-person shortlist for the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year Award.

    Dewsbury's Caitlin Beevers, 18, has been nominated after being capped by England and helping the Leeds Rhinos team which won the Women's Challenge Cup and Super League Grand Final.

    She also officiates games for the Rugby Football League.

    Huddersfield's Aaliyah Powell, 17, is the junior taekwondo world champion and won a silver medal at the Junior European Championships.

    The 16-year-old became the youngest British taekwondo fighter to win a medal at the senior World Championships, taking bronze.

    Anyone aged 17 or under on 1 January this year is eligible for the award, which was launched in 2001.

    Among the previous winners are footballer Wayne Rooney, tennis player Andy Murray, diver Tom Daley and swimmer Ellie Simmonds.

    A 28-year-old man from the Czech Republic has been extradited back to the UK to face charges of causing death by careless driving in North Yorkshire last year.

    Motorcyclist Ian Stewart, 63, from Wakefield, died from his injuries after being involved in a collision with a Skoda Octavia near Sherburn in Elmet on 18 October 2018.

    Zdenek Pulko, the driver of the car, was arrested at the time and released under investigation, police say.

    A warrant for his arrest was issued in June and officers from North Yorkshire Police travelled to Prague on 15 November to bring him back to the UK under a European Arrest Warrant.

    He appeared at York Magistrates’ Court on Saturday where he pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to appear at York Crown Court on 16 December.

    Bin workers in Kirklees have voted to go on strike after six were suspended, including some for allegedly drinking alcohol while on duty.

    Unison members voted 94% in a ballot for industrial action, the union said.

    Any potential strike could affect Huddersfield and Dewsbury but would not take place until next year.

    Kirklees Council said it had not been formally told of the ballot and described the union's action as "disappointing".

    A disused building in Doncaster has been transformed by volunteers into a distribution centre to help people hit by flooding in the area.

    Furniture and white goods like fridges and washing machines are being given out from there to flooding victims who are returning to their homes.

    The organisers say they've already been given lots of second-hand goods but are keen to get corporate pledges.

    Volunteer Julie Cheyne, from the Doncaster Flood Distribution Centre, says businesses which can help, should help.

    "We need a call to action now. All businesses across Doncaster and across Yorkshire that have these sorts of goods, please donate them to us and we will send them out," she said.

    "It's not a question of they can't do it, it's whether they want to do it."

    Halifax's five-time Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft has said losing for the first time in her career "woke her up".

    Cockroft was denied gold for the only time in her senior career at last year's European Championships in Berlin, finishing second behind Great Britain team-mate Kare Adenegan.

    But the 27-year-old came back to win the T34 100m and 800m at the World Para-Athletics Championships in Dubai last week, taking her tally of world titles to 12.

    "I kind of lost my motivation last year and that showed in my performances. I won my first silver medal, which I don't really think of as a win," said Cockroft.

    "Everything slipped. I went off to do other things like presenting on Countryfile and started to think about life beyond sport.

    "Being beaten really woke me up to how much I love racing, how much I love winning, and how much I love what I do," she added.

    A convicted sex offender who had an arrest warrant issued just hours after his release from prison yesterday has been arrested.

    Valerijs Gordijs, 46, was released from HMP Hull on Monday, with an appeal to find him issued the same day by police.

    He has since been arrested on Hessle Road, according to Humberside Police.

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm following an alleged assault in Bridlington on Saturday.

    A 17-year-old boy was reportedly knocked unconscious outside the Hook and Parrot pub on Esplanade just before midnight, say police.

    He was taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury.

    A 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old man have been arrested and bailed to appear at a police station next month.

    Officers want to speak to anyone who might have witnessed what happened, in particular a woman with dark hair who was wearing a white coat and black boots who was stood nearby.

    Police searching for a missing 89-year-old man say they are "very concerned for his welfare".

    Colin Vasey was reported missing from his home in Dewsbury on Sunday.

    He is possibly wearing pyjamas and a dark blue dressing gown, police say.

    Det Insp Stephanie Fox, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “We urgently need to find Colin. It was very cold last night and remains cold today and the clothing we believe he is wearing is completely unsuitable for the harsh conditions."

    Anyone who might have seen him is asked to contact police.

    A special constable who pulled a drowning man from the river Don after he leapt in while trying to evade police has been recognised by a national charity.

    The suspect, who couldn't swim, jumped 12ft from a bridge into the river after running from officers.

    SC Mark Cutts, who is based in Rotherham, pulled the man out of the water "saving his life".

    Now the Royal Humane Society has granted SC Cutts the award in recognition of his actions.

    Special Inspector Stephen Hepworth, who made the nomination, said: “There’s no doubt that Mark’s quick thinking saved this man’s life.

    "He showed immense bravery and, despite the obvious risk to himself, put a member of the public first."

  18. Forgotten cache of RNLI pictures 'preserved for posterity'published at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2019

    A forgotten cache of 13,000 Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) pictures has been rediscovered in an attic and is being "preserved for posterity".

    The photos were found earlier this year in a large dusty pile in the organisation's headquarters in Poole, Dorset.

    Work has been started to preserve the pictures, the earliest of which are from the 1920s, and digitise the whole collection.

    Joe Williams, of the RNLI, said: "We are bringing the pictures back into the light."

    An inquest into the death of schoolgirl Elsie Frost in Wakefield is expected to finish today.

    Elsie, 14, was stabbed to death as she walked home after sailing on Horbury lagoon in 1965.

    The inquest has already heard that Peter Pickering was named as a suspect in the days after the killing, but police did not follow it up.

    Convicted child killer Pickering died last year before police could charge him.

  20. Flood relief concert planned to help affected familiespublished at 09:20 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2019

    A concert is being organised to help people affected by flooding in South Yorkshire.

    Organised by BBC Radio Sheffield and Doncaster Dome, the concert will feature music from local band Bang Bang Romeo (pictured above with Toby Foster) and the Everley Pregnant Brothers.

    Comedians Paul Sinha, who features on ITV's The Chase, Justin Moorhouse and Tom Wrigglesworth will also perform.

    It will take place at the Doncaster Dome on 10 December with proceeds going to the flood disaster appeal.

    Tickets will go on sale next week.
