The YAA said "staff, volunteer and donor opinion" had led to the move by its trustee board.

It follows Prince Andrew's appearance on BBC Newsnight and the controversy over his ties to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The duke opened the air ambulance base at Nostell in 2015.

For several months the duke had been facing questions over his ties to US financier Epstein, who took his own life in August while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's accusers, claimed she was forced to have sex with the prince three times.

The duke has always denied any form of sexual contact or relationship with her.

YAA said: "As a charity funded by public donations, we must seriously consider the opinions of our donors and supporters, this has been a significant factor in reaching this decision."

The University of Huddersfield has also said the prince would step down as chancellor.

Woodland and green burial sites have become popular nationally since the first was opened at Carlisle in 1993.

The coffins are often biodegradable, made from cardboard or recycled paper, wicker, banana leaf, bamboo or willow and are designed to decompose easily.

Natural burials are not marked with a headstone but instead are identified by a tree or flowers with the intention of looking as closely as possible like a natural meadow or woodland.

The proposal in Calderdale would bring an area of land next to a designated burial site at Booth into use for about 180 natural burial plots, at an estimated cost of about £2,000.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet will meet at Halifax Town Hall on 2 December to discuss the plans.

  20. Apology after Abbey Dash 10k route found to be 'too short'published at 15:18 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2019

Runners who took part in the Leeds Abbey Dash race last month have been told their finishing times won't count after what was supposed to be a 10k course was found to be too short.

    Leeds Abbey Dash 2019

The race, which saw 8,000 runners take part and raised about £200,000 for charity in 2019, is organised by charity Age UK.

This year's 34th edition of the event was held on 27 October on a course slightly altered from previous years.

Welsh runner Charlotte Arter ran 31 minutes and 34 seconds to break the women's course record at this year's event. At the time, it made her the fourth fastest British woman of all time.

But the course was "re-assessed" after the event and was found to be 23m short, according to Age UK.

The charity added it was "extremely sorry" for the disappointment the news may have caused participants.

Head of events Lydia Curran said: "The event is managed and organised with a trusted team which makes every effort to ensure everyone has a safe and fun day.

"The route will be re-licensed for 2020 and in the meantime we are so grateful for everyone who took part and raised vital funds to help improve the lives of older people."
