    A mum from Leeds who was forced to leave school after getting pregnant aged 14 has fulfilled her dream of graduating with her "smiling" daughter watching on.

    Six year-old Lily-Rose was "grinning from ear to ear" as she watched her mother Rachael Campey receive a degree in counselling psychology.

    Miss Campey, 21, said the education system "gave up" on her when she became pregnant.

    She said: "Everything I've worked through has been for Lily."

    Miss Campey, who graduated on Wednesday from Leeds Trinity University, said the ceremony was "really emotional".

    "Lily was just grinning at me and said I looked like someone off Hogwarts. They accidentally pronounced my surname wrong when I went onto the stage to collect my degree, and I heard her correct them and say, 'That's my mummy'."

    Miss Campey, who has also been nominated for the inspirational individual award at the 2020 Yorkshire Choice awards, said she hoped to continue studying or become a public speaker.

    A man claiming to be an official from the "water board" has conned his way into two homes in Barnsley, police say.

    The incidents happened in Darfield on Monday between 13:00 and 14:00, when the man visited two homes on Edderthorpe Lane, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    Claiming to be carrying out emergency works, the man gained access to the properties by asking to run the taps to check the water wasn’t discoloured.

    Officers say while he was talking to residents in the kitchen, a second man entered the property and stole cash from a downstairs bedroom.

    The force has produced an e-fit of the bogus official (above) and is urging anyone who recognises him to get in touch.

  3. Spate of Norovirus school closures in North Yorkshirepublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2019

    At least seven schools in North Yorkshire have been forced to close so far this term for a deep clean because of the Norovirus winter vomiting bug, it's emerged.

    Schools are being encouraged to maintain good hygiene to prevent further illness.

    The illness affected several schools in Catterick Garrison last week and one in Richmondshire and another in the Selby district this week.

    The main symptoms of norovirus are typically:

    • Suddenly feeling sick
    • Projectile vomiting
    • Watery diarrhoea

    Health bosses say anyone who's been infected should stay clear of places like care homes and hospitals.

    Police are appealing for help in identifying several men who fought in a street in Doncaster at the weekend armed with metal bars.

    The fighting happened between 00:20 and 01:00 on Saturday on Nether Hall Road in the town centre.

    A 29-year-old man was injured during the disorder, police say.

    Officers believe the seven men pictured could hold vital information and are appealing for them, or anyone who recognises them, to get in touch.

    The boy was arrested away from the scene on suspicion of having an offensive weapon in a public place and affray, West Yorkshire Police added.

    Nobody was injured during the incident, officers add.

    Five men who were abused as teenagers by a sports coach have been praised by police for coming forward.

    Dylan Lamb, 72, of Queens Court, Scawby, North Lincolnshire was jailed for 30 years after being found guilty of abusing the boys between the 1970s and early 2000s.

    Some of the abuse, which happened in South Yorkshire, was with boys as young as 13.

    Det Con Kath Coulter, who led the investigation, praised the men's bravery for coming forward.

    She said: “The horrific, sustained abuse that Lamb subjected the boys to has had a profound impact on them.

    “The five survivors, now all adults, have been forced to recount the abuse in detail through a trial and they have all shown immense courage in standing up to Lamb once again and telling the court what happened to them.“I hope that knowing he has been found guilty and is now facing what could potentially be the rest of his life behind bars offers them some comfort."

    A formal inquiry is to be set up by a council after complaints of the "anti-social" use of fireworks "year-round" in parts of Leeds.

    The city council heard that in some cases children were throwing fireworks at vehicles, and there were illegal sales taking place.

    In the city on Bonfire Night riot police were deployed after fireworks were used as weapons in Harehills.

    Some imported fireworks did not meet UK standards, a council officer said.

    Councillor Amanda Carter said: "Nobody wants to stop the pleasure and enjoyment of fireworks but it is becoming an increasing problem about the noise and anti-social behaviour."

    Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) says it's "appalled" by the thefts of two defibrillators from Barnsley.

    One was stolen from a cabinet outside Barnsley Town Hall, with another also being take from an accountants in the town centre.

    Writing on Twitter, YAS said: "We're appalled that two vital pieces of life-saving equipment have been stolen in Barnsley this week. Please contact the police if you have any information."

    Two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car this afternoon.

    The incident happened at about 15:10 on Leeds Road, in Allerton Bywater, near Castleford.

    West Yorkshire Police said two pedestrians, a male and a female, have been injured.

    The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene, the force said.

    The Yorkshire Air Ambulance has attended.
