  13. Over one million coffee cups recycled in Leeds binspublished at 08:16 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2019

More than 1.2 million coffee cups have been recycled in the first year of a trial scheme to cut waste in Leeds.

    Three bins

Almost 200 brightly coloured recycling bins were placed in the city centre in October 2018 to take packaging for food and drink consumed in the street.

Before then, the city's bins were not suitable for "on-the-go" waste.

The new bins have also handled 160,000 plastic bottles, but the scheme's organisers estimated 80% of recyclable products still went in the wrong bin.

The #LeedsByExample project installed the recycling bins for plastic bottles, cans and paper cups on the streets, in offices, shopping centres, universities and transport hubs in the square mile of Leeds city centre.

The scheme has since spread to Edinburgh and Swansea, with plans to roll it out to other cities and towns in 2020.

The veins behind Ms Jolleys' eyes do not reach far enough across, affecting her long-distance vision, she also has a condition called nystagmus which causes her eyes to shake.

Director Zoë Waterman said the crew had to make sure things were not lying around in the dark backstage.

A sailor from Hull who helped save 27 people from a container ship ablaze off the French coast has been awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.

Able Seaman Alex Harvey, 25, was one of two crew from HMS Argyll to receive the award.

They struggled for eight hours in towering waters in a small boat to perform the rescue in March.

HMS Argyll had been on her way home to Plymouth after nine months away in the Asia-Pacific region when it heard a merchant ship was in difficulty about 150 miles southwest of Brest in the Bay of Biscay.

The two sailors volunteered to go to her aid in an eight-metre long boat.

Every man aboard the stricken Grande America, a 28,000-tonne container ship, was taken to safety.

"It was rough – very rough and as we got near to the ship, it turned out to be a lot worse than we’d imagined it," said Able Seaman Harvey.
