The clock tower was built as part of the Terry's chocolate factory in the 1920s, but stopped working when the plant closed in 2005.

A developer is now converting the factory into apartments.

Noel Terry, who commissioned it, could see the distinctive Art Deco clock tower, which overlooks York's Knavesmire racecourse, from his house on Tadcaster Road.

Because it has four faces, the clock can be seen from anywhere in the city, so people knew if they were on time for work.

The clock also came in handy for the occasional aspersion on people's reputations.

York people unsure of another person's trustworthiness used to say they had "more faces than Terry’s clock".

Over the next three days, a crane will be used to install a new clock face.
