    British middle-distance runner Alexandra Bell says she is considering taking legal action against UK Athletics after being overlooked for funding for the Tokyo Olympics.

    Bell, from Leeds, produced Britain's best performance in the women's 800m semi-finals at the 2019 World Championships.

    But the 27-year-old was not selected for UKA's world-class programme.

    "I'm not the first athlete who's probably gone through this, but I want to be the last," she said.

    Bell used social media, external to blame her omission on Barry Fudge, the organisation's head of endurance.

    She has now threatened to take the matter further, telling BBC Sport that UKA had behaved "disgracefully" and treated athletes "like dishcloths".

    In a statement, UKA said it did not comment on individual cases, adding that selection decisions were "discussed thoroughly" and that every athlete was "treated fairly and with respect at all times".

    Fudge has declined to comment.

  3. Elderly woman's knifepoint burglary: Two arrests madepublished at 11:33 Greenwich Mean Time 24 December 2019

    Two people have been arrested after a 70-year-old woman was tied up and injured during a "prolonged" knifepoint burglary at her home in Hull.

    A woman knocked on the elderly woman's door before forcing her way into the house along with two men.

    The victim was then tied up and threatened with further violence, her family said.

    A 34-year-old man and a woman, aged 40, have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and released under investigation.

    A 16-year-old boy who was also arrested has been released without charge.

    A woman whose daughter spent days on life support after she swallowed a coin-sized button battery is warning other parents about the dangers.

    Clare Skill's six-year-old daughter Sophie was hospitalised after battery acid burned through her gullet (oesophagus) and into her lung.

    Clare, from Sheffield, said: "Within two hours it had already done the damage. They did an X-ray and found it had burned through her oesophagus and her lung. She had to go on a ventilator."

    She has backed warnings about the dangers of the button batteries, which can be found in gadgets including Christmas lights, gaming headsets, fitness trackers and light-up yo-yos.

    NHS England Medical Director, Prof Stephen Powis, said: "For toddlers, button batteries can look like sweets.

    "We want to ensure parents are aware of the dangers of these potentially lethal batteries.

    "The best way to protect children is simply by keeping batteries out of reach for children, and ensure that any toys that require the batteries are firmly locked into the battery compartment."

    A Gulf War veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has found a novel way to ease his symptoms - crafting Christmas baubles.

    Mike Kirkby began making the baubles five years ago after seeing homemade efforts on social media.

    He found the process a therapy for his flashbacks and makes about 150 baubles each Christmas for the Hull-based National Gulf Veterans and Families Association.

    A 16-year-old girl who has gone missing in West Yorkshire may be in the Kirklees area, say police.

    Janatt King (pictured), was last seen in Halifax on 22 December, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    The teenager is described as a white, about 4ft 8ins tall, slim, with long dark brown hair.

    She was last seen wearing a pink hoody and cycling shorts.

    Anyone who sees her, or has any information about her whereabouts, is being urged to contact West Yorkshire Police.

    A van driver has been charged with raping a woman after offering her a lift.

    Humberside Police said the woman was walking along Nafferton Road, near Driffield, on 25 November when a van pulled alongside her and the driver offered her a lift.

    The woman got in to the van but a short time later the driver is said to have stopped in a layby and attacked her.

    Richard Ramsay, 33, of Ings Lane, Bedale, has been charged with rape in connection with the incident and is due to appear at Hull Crown Court on 3 January. He has been remanded into custody.

    The Prince of Wales has visited a South Yorkshire village hit by flooding last month as the recovery operation continues there.

    Prince Charles spent two hours in Fishlake chatting to many of the residents lining the streets and looking inside some of the badly-damaged homes.

    He met firefighters, police officers and soldiers on the outskirts of the village near Doncaster, then headed to the worst-affected areas:

  13. York boy wins Young Choristers of the Year, 2019published at 17:52 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2019

    A 13-year-old boy from North Yorkshire has been crowned BBC Radio Two's Young Chorister of the Year.

    Will Miles-Kingston, from York, regularly sings at the city's Minster.

    Eight contestants from around the UK, aged between 11 and 17, competed in the final.

    Will said, “I am really happy to be the Young Chorister of the Year 2019, especially knowing how talented the other finalists were."

    Robert Sharpe, director of music at York Minster, commented, “Will’s work as a Minster chorister was exemplary, not just for his outstanding voice, but also as a team-player and keen supporter of his peers.”

    Jeremy Walker, head master of St Peter’s School, York, added, “We are tremendously proud of Will who continues the centuries old tradition of choral singing at St Peter’s."

    The family of murdered West Yorkshire Labour MP Jo Cox have planted an oak tree in her memory at a dedicated woodland memorial.

    The 41-year-old MP for Batley and Spen was shot and stabbed in 2016 by right-wing extremist Thomas Mair while she was on her way to meet constituents in Birstall.

    Following her death, the Jo Cox Community Wood, a 3.7 acre site near Cleckheaton, was set up by the Spen Valley Civic Society.

    The tree, planted by Mrs Cox's parents Gordon and Jean Leadbeater and her sister Kim Leadbeater, has inspired the society to run a Trees for Life scheme until the end of February.

    As part of the scheme, people can buy, plant and maintain a half-standard native tree in return for a £50 donation.

    A seven-year-old boy from Hull with cystic fibrosis has received a new drug after his family campaigned for the treatment on the NHS.

    Olly has been given the drug Orkambi following its approval for UK use last month.

    In June, he wrote to the then prime minister Theresa May after the drug was delayed as it was deemed too expensive.

    The NHS has now secured a confidential deal with the US manufacturer to reduce the £104,000 per year cost.

    The new drug improves lung function, reduces breathing difficulties and can be given to children as young as two.

    Olly's mother, Emma Ward who was part of a campaign group, said the new drug would change his life.

    "These two little pink pills will thin his mucus, which will then mean he will get less chest infections which means less treatments with antibiotics and stuff," she said.

    A mayor for the whole of Yorkshire would be a "tremendous opportunity", according to the Archbishop of York.

    In his Christmas message, Dr John Sentamu says: "There are areas being left behind because they don't have a single voice.

    "What Yorkshire's gone for is not a Parliament - they want one elected mayor who can co-ordinate.

    "We're not asking for Yorkshire independence, the days of the red and white rose wars are over, so nobody is going back there."

    The Archbishop's message has been welcomed by Baron Kirkhope of Harrogate, who co-chairs the Parliamentary Group One Yorkshire.

    Baron Kirkhope says: "I'm very much in favour of having 'One Yorkshire' and having someone at the top of it, whether it's a mayor or a convener, so I'm delighted about the Archbishop's message."

    A man has been arrested in connection with the theft of Lego worth thousands of pounds and a parking meter in Hull.

    Officers carried out a number of searches and made the arrest this morning, according to Humberside Police.

    The Lego was stolen from a warehouse on Williamson Street in November.

    The suspect is also being held in custody in relation to burglary and motor vehicle theft.

    There have been 205 arrests for drink-driving offences in West Yorkshire since 1 December, police say.

    Police have also reported 117 arrests for drug-driving in the region.

    That makes a total of 322 arrests for drink and drug-driving in total in December, with a rise of 53 arrests since Saturday., external

    The force has warned drivers to take care over the festive period.

    Prince Charles has been visiting South Yorkshire to meet people affected by last month's floods.

    He has met firefighters, police officers and soldiers at the village of Fishlake, near Doncaster, and toured the worst-affected areas.

    Hundreds of home were evacuated and businesses were affected when a month's worth of rain fell in 24 hours last month, causing the River Don to burst its banks.

    As part of his visit, Prince Charles had a beer at the Hare and Hounds pub, which was at the centre of the flood relief effort in the village, even sending food around to stranded residents.

    He sipped from a half-pint glass before moving on to the village church, which also acted as a relief hub.

    Many villagers whose properties are still uninhabitable will spend Christmas away from their homes.

    Others will mark the holiday in mobile homes, static caravans and camper vans provided by insurance companies.
