    Doncaster North MP and ex-Labour leader Ed Miliband will sit on a panel of party figures to review the party's general election failure, it's been confirmed.

    Labour Together, which describes itself as a network of activists from all traditions, is setting up a commission to "map out a route back to power".

    It says the panel will view attempts to pin the blame on a single cause, such as Brexit or Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, as simplistic and wrong.

    Members, focus groups in heartlands and defeated candidates will get a say.

    Former shadow education secretary Lucy Powell will spearhead the review, alongside Mr Miliband and Birmingham Ladywood MP Shabana Mahmood.

  2. Cleckheaton crash: Man charged with attempted murderpublished at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2019

    A man has appeared in court charged with six counts of attempted murder after a car hit six pedestrians in a West Yorkshire town.

    The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday in Bradford Road in Cleckheaton.

    Five of the injured pedestrians have since been released from hospital. A sixth - a man in his 40s - remains in a critical condition.

    Andrew Wrigglesworth, 49, of Shirley Avenue, Birstall, was remanded in custody by magistrates in Leeds.

    He is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 20 January.

    An engagement ring's been returned by police to a bride-to-be from Barnsley who said it was taken as she travelled through Birmingham Airport, external.

    West Midlands Police said Lydia and her fiance Ryan were going on holiday earlier this month to celebrate their recent engagement when she took it off when going through security.

    She only realised it was missing when about to board their flight and, on going back to security, officers realised the ring was picked up by another passenger.

    The force said it had now found and returned the ring to the couple at their home in Barnsley.

    A 51-year-old woman was voluntary interviewed about the theft and has been released while inquiries continue, according to West Midlands Police.

    A missing cat from Doncaster has been reunited with his owner after the wandering feline walked 10 miles to the next town.

    Named Sole, the cat went missing in Armthorpe in early December and had spent three weeks living on the streets and making his way into Balby.

    A member of the public found him in a duffel bag and in a "very skinny" state on 13 December.

    The RSPCA then reunited him with his owner Lucy Loizou.

    Ms Loizou said: "My sons, who love Sole, were heartbroken he was missing. We are so thankful to have him back."

    Have you seen Tyrone Taylor? The 21-year-old has been missing in Huddersfield since 18 December, according to police.

    Mr Taylor, who is also known as Danny, has links to Leeds city centre.

    He is about 6ft 1in tall and was last seen wearing a black jacket, black cap, grey joggers and black trainers, police say.

    Anyone with information about his whereabouts is being asked to get in touch with police.

    Seven people are being treated in hospital, including three in a critical condition, after a crash in Leeds involving four vehicles.

    A black Suzuki car was travelling north towards Leeds on the A653 Dewsbury Road at about 17:00 on Sunday when a white Skoda Octavia turned right from Topcliffe Grange Farm entrance onto the dual carriageway, police say.

    The Suzuki lost control and collided with a white Vauxhall van and a black Audi A3.

    A 42-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Audi, and two 19-year-old men, who were the driver and passenger in the Suzuki, are in a critical condition.

    The other four people involved in the crash either suffered slight injuries or are recovering in hospital.

    Anyone with dash-cam footage or who witnessed the crash is being urged to contact police.

    A group of Yorkshire MPs say they expect to see major improvements to TransPennine Express rail services from today.

    Rail commuters in the north of England were hit by cancellations and delays when new winter timetables were launched last week.

    Conservative MPs Kevin Hollinrake (Thirsk and Malton), Robert Goodwill (Scarborough and Whitby) and Jason McCartney (Colne Valley) say they demanded urgent changes when they met TransPennine boss Leo Goodwin.

    Mr Goodwin said he was "really sorry" for the disruption to customers at such a busy time of year.

    He said: "Due to issues with crew training, caused by the late delivery of some of our new trains, along with a maintenance backlog and some infrastructure issues, we had to implement a temporary timetable."

    Mr Goodwin says the introduction of new trains should see an improvement to people’s journeys.

    Kevin Hollinrake MP says: "We've seen one-in-five trains cancelled or significantly late, so we've said we must see a tangible improvement .

    "What they've agreed to do is reduce that by 50% by January."

    A pedestrian who was hit by a car in Leeds at the weekend has died, police say.

    The man, in his 60s, was struck by a pink Fiat 500 on Saturday at about 13:00 on Gledhow Valley Road, near to the junction with Harrogate Road.

    West Yorkshire Police say the man was taken to hospital by air ambulance but died from injuries.

    Sgt Carl Quinn said: “This has clearly been a very serious incident and we are appealing for witnesses to what took place."

    A man's been charged with six counts of attempted murder after a car hit pedestrians in the early hours of Sunday morning in a West Yorkshire town, say police.

    The 49-year-old man is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court this morning.

    The collision, involving a red Audi, happened on Bradford Road in Cleckheaton in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    Five men have since been released from hospital, while a sixth remains in hospital in a critical condition, said the force.

    Det Ch Supt Pat Twiggs said: "I would ask for anyone who has CCTV in the local area which may have captured the incident, or the red Audi driving in the area, to contact officers as soon as possible."

    Prince Charles is visiting South Yorkshire today to meet people affected by last month's floods.

    He'll travel to Fishlake, which was one of the hardest hit communities when floods struck in November.

    Hundreds of home were evacuated and business affected after the nearby River Don burst its banks.

    It's thought many villagers will spend Christmas away from home as their houses are dried out with heaters, dehumidifiers and fans.

    The Prince of Wales is expected to speak to villagers and businesses affected by the floods and to emergency service workers who helped with the rescue and clean up efforts.

    A man's been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a cyclist was killed in West Yorkshire at the weekend.

    The crash happened at a roundabout on the A638 Doncaster Road at South Elmsall at about 06:45 on Saturday.

    West Yorkshire Police said the driver of a red Ford Fiesta failed to stop and was later arrested.

    The 20-year-old is also suspected of driving while over the legal limit for alcohol or drugs.

    No details about the cyclist have yet been released. Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage.

    A dog support unit (DSU) shared between three police forces is to be split up.

    Durham, Cleveland and North Yorkshire merged the service in 2016 in a bid to cuts costs and increase expertise.

    The three chief constables have now agreed due to changing demands, including a need for officers to travel long distances more often, they will return to the individual forces.

    The change will not affect the overall cost of policing, and there are no plans to reduce the number of dogs.

    Police say there will still be opportunities for joint-working, for example when specific incidents require the use of a greater number of dogs at one location.

    The Environment Agency has one flood warning and seven flood alerts in place across East Yorkshire this morning following heavy rain over the weekend.

    The flood warning - meaning flooding is expected - has been issued for low lying properties in the Upper Hull catchment area, near the villages of Rotsea and Hempholme.

    The Environment Agency say river levels in the area, particularly on Roam Drain, remain high, though "no significant rain is forecast" for today.

    People have been advised to avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses in the area.

    A driver has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after six people were injured, one seriously, when they were knocked down by a car.

    The 49-year-old man was arrested after the crash in Bradford Road, Cleckheaton, on Sunday, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    One of the six men hurt, aged in his 40s, is in a life-threatening condition, the force said.

    Earlier on Saturday evening, police said there had been an altercation between the driver of a red Audi involved in the crash and some of the injured parties. The suspect remains in police custody.

    Det Ch Supt Pat Twiggs, said: "I would ask for anyone who has CCTV in the local area which may have captured the incident, or the red Audi driving in the area, to contact officers as soon as possible."

    Three of the victims, who sustained minor injuries, were treated in hospital before being discharged.
