    A flood alert for the coast at Bridlington is in place for tonight as the country prepares for Storm Brendan.

    High waves and spray are predicted on the low-lying land around the South Pier and Lifeboat station between 18:00 and 21:00.

    An alert means flooding is possible and residents should be prepared, say the Met Office.

    An exhibition on the North Yorkshire coast celebrating 200 years of Anne Bronte has opened with hundreds of artworks inspired by her writing.

    The pieces, each inspired by a different page of her best-selling novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, are being shown at Woodend gallery in Scarborough.

    Lindsey Tyson, an artist and the exhibition's creator, said of the author: "She's like the forgotten sister, the other sister."

    Anne Bronte, who also wrote Agnes Grey, was born on 17 January 1820 and died at the age of 29 after succumbing to tuberculosis.

    She is the only member of the famous literary family not buried at their home in Haworth, West Yorkshire.

    A page from a vintage edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was given to 200 artists, who used it as the basis for their artworks.

    Ms Tyson described the exhibition as Bronte's last novel in "picture form" and includes textiles, digital art and portraits.

    Armed robbers have stolen more than £9,000 from a business in Heckmondwike after storming in to an office brandishing an axe and a baseball bat.

    Two men wearing high-vis jackets and face masks threatened staff after walking into the premises on Albion Street at about 12:30 on Friday.

    West Yorkshire Police say the men took about £9,000 in cash, along with a silver Rolex watch and a gold Mont Blanc pen.

    The force has appealed for help in finding two men wanted in connection with the robbery, along with a car.

    The suspects are described as white. Both were around 5ft 8ins tall and spoke with a local accent.

    The car, a navy blue Nissan Primera, was in the area at the time, the force added.

    Labour MP for Leeds East and Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon has secured enough nominations to qualify for the next round of the deputy Labour leadership race.

    Mr Burgon is one of five candidates for the position alongside, Angela Rayner, Ian Murray, Dawn Butler, and Rosena Allin-Khan.

    He received 22 votes, external, the minimum needed to qualify for the next phase.

    A 12-year-old boy is due to undergo surgery this afternoon after being injured in a drive-by shooting in Sheffield, police say.

    The boy was shot in the left thigh in an incident on Sunday which police say is part of an ongoing feud between rival gangs.

    Speaking at a press conference earlier, Assistant Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police Tim Forber (pictured above) said the boy was "an entirely innocent bystander" caught up in a "shocking and horrific" incident.

    He said the boy was standing outside shops on Northern Avenue, in Arbourthorne, at about 15:45 yesterday, with three friends aged 13, 15 and 16 when he was "caught in the line of fire of a targeted attack".

    He said a white Ford Focus similar to one used in the attack had been found with fire damage in Clough Road, near Sheffield United's Bramall Lane football stadium, just after 18:00 yesterday.

    The South Yorkshire force says: "It's imperative anyone with information about the incident speaks to an officer."

    A man has been arrested in connection with the death of one of Britain's most prolific paedophiles.

    Richard Huckle died at HMP Full Sutton, in Yorkshire, on 13 October last year, reportedly fatally stabbed in his cell with a makeshift blade.

    Huckle, 33, was in prison for abusing up to 200 Malaysian children.

    Humberside Police said a 29-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the death, and a file passed to the Crown Prosecution Service.

    "We are awaiting their decision regarding charges," a force spokesperson said.

    Huckle, from Ashford, Kent, was given 22 life sentences in 2016 after admitting 71 charges of sex abuse against children aged between six months and 12 years.

    A Grade II-listed Sheffield landmark, known for its "brutalist" architecture, has been awarded £500,000 to help restore part of the building.

    The flats at Park Hill, which sit above the city's station, are being redeveloped by Urban Splash.

    The grant, from Historic England, will be used to restore parts of the original concrete which has deteriorated.

    The money is funding "essential" repairs to the structure as part of the next phase of redevelopment on the 1960s housing estate, according to Historic England.

    In total, £900,000 has been put forward to help bring the structure up to scratch, with money being granted during the first phase of redevelopment to create 260 homes.

    The next phase is due to be completed in 2021, with 195 extra homes being planned.

    A 33-year-old man has been charged with attacking former Scotland captain and Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister in Leeds last year.

    McAllister (pictured) needed hospital treatment after he was allegedly punched in the face outside a bar on Call Lane at about 04:00 on 24 March.

    Damien Swan, of Beeston, Leeds, is due to appear before magistrates on Wednesday charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

    McAllister played for Leeds from 1990 to 1996, a period which saw them become champions of the former First Division in 1992.

    He also played for Leicester City, Coventry and Liverpool and won 57 caps for Scotland.

    The 55-year-old driver, who crashed into the corner of a wall, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, or those who saw a blue Vauxhall Astra beforehand, to come forward.

    Engineers say a tunnel built 100ft (30m) beneath the Humber estuary is proof humans can achieve anything they put their minds to.

    The three-mile long tunnel, the first tunnel to be constructed under the river Humber, will house a gas pipeline running between Goxhill in North Lincolnshire and Paull in East Yorkshire.

    The tunnel is about to be flooded to allow the pipe to be pushed through it.

    The £130m project will provide a quarter of the Britain's gas supplies, according to National Grid.

    Phil Croft, the Senior project Engineer for the National Grid, says: "The tunnel is finished, but there's still a lot of work to do before the job is finished.

    "Now we're starting to prepare the tunnel for the pipe line insertion - It's an absolutely wonderful feat of engineering

    "The things humans can do when they get together and build something like this is quite amazing."

    Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow struggled to hold back the tears at a special fundraising match in front of almost 20,000 fans following his diagnosis with motor neurone disease.

    Burrow, 37, who found out he had the incurable disease in December, walked on to the pitch with his three children before kick-off against Bradford Bulls.

    He then came on for an emotional final five minutes.

    "I was tired but I absolutely loved every minute," he said at full-time.

    "You don't know how much it means. No words will come close to describing how I feel right now. Thank you so much."

    MND is a degenerative condition that affects how nerves in the brain and spinal cord function.

    Burrow's long-term Leeds team-mate Jamie Jones-Buchanan agreed to share his testimonial game against Bradford, with proceeds from the match split between the two.

    A crowdfunding page set up for former England international Burrow has so far raised more than £245,000.

    A group of monks belonging to an Egyptian-based religion has applied to build a church in the North York Moors National Park.

    St Athanasius' Monastery has submitted plans to the park authorities to build at its base near Langdale End.

    The parish council for the hamlet, near Scarborough, has objected and said the church would look "totally alien".

    St Athanasius' Monastery became the first Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria monastery in Great Britain in 2004.

    A congregation of up to 100 worshippers regularly travel there in three buses to join the monks, who lead a strict life of fasting and prayer.

    The parish council, which represents the 42 residents of the hamlet, objected to the proposal which includes a 125 foot (38m) long church featuring two high domed towers in the style of Egyptian churches.

    Proposals will be discussed by the North York Moors National Park Authority on Thursday.

    Campaigners are calling for plans to expand Leeds Bradford Airport to be scrapped if the region wants to meet its ambitious climate targets.

    Plans for an airport link road have already been abandoned, but there are proposals for a spur road linking the airport to a new railway station.

    Speaking before a meeting back in September, Extinction Rebellion said pushing on with airport expansion plans was "incompatible" with the climate emergency declaration.

    It said research showed emissions from LBA, even at current levels, would exceed the entire "carbon budget" set by Leeds council in an attempt to achieve its zero carbon target by 2030.

    "Continued support for airport expansion indicates the council is not facing up to its responsibilities," it said.

    A Leeds City Council climate committee are due to discuss the expansion this morning, external.

    The council says the plans would bring in sustainable public transport infrastructure and encourage a reduction in car use.

    Sheffield Council leader Julie Dore has announced she will step down at May’s local elections after nine years in charge.

    Cllr Dore will not seek re-election in her Park and Arbourthorne ward but will remain leader of the council until then.

    She said: “My term ends this May and I have had to make a decision about carrying on for another four years. I feel that from a personal perspective, this is the right time for me to move on.

    “I truly believe in what this city stands for – its values of solidarity, collectivism, hard work, integrity, humility, grit and determination, its character and most of all its people.

    Cllr Dore has been a councillor for 20 years.

    It comes as residents are set to vote in a referendum on whether to the city council should be run in a different way.

    That vote will take place during the local elections in May.

    A man and a woman charged with murdering a toddler who died from head injuries have appeared in court.

    Two-year-old Keigan O'Brien was taken to hospital after police were called to a house in Bosworth Road, Doncaster, at about 11:00 on Wednesday.

    Police said he was in cardiac arrest and remained in a critical condition but died the next day.

    Martin Currie and Sarah O'Brien were remanded in custody by city magistrates.

    Mr Currie, 36, and Ms O'Brien, 32, both of Bosworth Road, are set to appear at Sheffield Crown Court tomorrow.

    A post-mortem examination concluded Keigan died as a result of head injuries, South Yorkshire Police said.
